Anyone else remember the Queens Silver Jubillee visit to Ipswich in 1977? 13:01 - Sep 9 with 1659 viewsghostofescobar

I would have been 8, but i can remember it quite vividly for some reason. I think she flew into Ipswich airport. My dad worked for a firm at the end of Nacton Road, roughly where the the Thrasher pub is now. His firm parked one of their tipper trucks out the front and we all climbed on the back (blankets over the sides to stop us getting filthy!) to get a better view. I clearly remember her driving passed on her way into town. Massive crowds. Only time I have seen the Queen, I think. Funny the things we remember! Ten months later, we won the FA Cup! Perhaps we can Charles into Ipswich and see if it has a similar effect!!

Vaguely recall it. I was only 5 and a pupil at Brittania Primary School. All the kids had to go out on the school field as the Queen went by in her open top car. Think there was some sort of street party in our road too (Camden Road). We - the kids - also got a commemorative silver jubilee coin. Should see if my mum has still got that.

I assume it was the same visit, we had a school trip to see her at what's now BT at Martlesham which she officially opened. Think I saw her on one other occasion, in Gothenburg in about 1983 oddly, we were staying with friends there at the same time she was doing much the same.

Yes remember it. I was in the Air Training Corp and we lined the road leading to St Clements Hospital. Just saw her drive past, it was the one and only time I ever saw her.

I don't remember the visit, but do remember the street party in Pearcroft.

I had just started work and Willis and went with many others to the Cornhill and stood by the old Post office to see her arrive at the Town Hall.

I remember the 2002 one as getting across from one side of the town to the driving theory test centre was incredibly difficult and I nearly missed my test - as it was got there and aced it and then still got to give the Queen a wave

I remember making things in primary school in Gislingham. We had a village party too. I’d have been 5 and then the year later we moved to Ipswich and that sparked Town’s great spell under SBR (I was as important as the great man himself if you think about it lol).

Yes, saw her go past in her car on the bridge over the train line on Foxhall Rd (near the California club). Very much a fleeting glance but enough to remember it.

I wasnt that old,but I do remember it, just ,we went to St Clements to see her, and it was very hot day and seemed to take hours for her to turn up, and then she eventually was driven past, and we waved & cheered and I probably caught just a glimpse as I couldnt see over or through the crowds that much.

Just came back to this thread to post that video! Thought I might have got that wrong. Couldn't spot myself in the crowd but interesting to see the Labs back in the day. Recognise bits of it from when I worked there.

Yep! I made the long trip from BSE to stand outside what was still a fairly new hospital in Heath Road. No idea why we stood in that particular location. I was 15 at the time and to come to Ipswich was still a trip to a big town which was always a bit of a culture shock!
