Truss and Kwarteng to go after full-time workers 22:39 - Sep 21 with 2342 views | tractordownsouth | After indicating they’ll be giving more money to bankers, the government are now proposing to cut benefits for people who don’t earn enough money, after spending all summer condemning people who went on strike to increase their wages. This is presumably going to encourage them to leave their jobs in pointless industries like social care and do something much more socially important like becoming a hedge fund manager. Even leaving aside the sheer cruelty of this (this affects people in work not just “scroungers”) it’s economic insanity as well. People on low incomes spend almost all of their money, so that’s cash being taken out of small businesses, particularly in the poorest areas.

It feels like each Conservative government is trying to out-evil the previous one. Cameron’s ministry, even the brief one he ran without the Lib Dems, looks positively saintly in comparison.

Truss and Kwarteng to go after full-time workers on 08:04 - Sep 22 with 1641 views | Steve_M | They can't comprehend the idea that people in paid work can still be poor, it's a fundamental lack of both awareness and empathy. It's just more of the same failed crap that's seen the UK have anaemic growth since the financial crisis. The bonus cap is neither here nor there in real terms but it is hugely symbolic and the claims it will be a boost to the city ring hollow after the most destructive of Brexits.

More fundamentally than that, they fail (or are unwilling) to comprehend that: A) In a service industry economy, second- and third-jobs are going to want you there on the same days and times as your other employer(s) - especially weekends. B) The geographical/logistical imopssibility of a part-time hairdresser from Bristol going salad picking in the Cambridgeshire fens on their days off (the cost of travel would, in any case, wipe out all financial benefits). C) The fact that finding more and better paid work is not simply a matter of looking harder. The jobs have to exist in the first place. Candidates need to be suitably trained, qualified and/or experienced to get them. D) If everyone is driven out of part-time work, who is going to do those jobs? What about employers who rely on part-time staff to keep costs down and thus remain viable? The biggest issue is well-paid job creation, which the Government seems to think is something which will miraculously happen all by itself if comfortably-off and wealthy non business owners are allowed to save a bit in tax. Rather than actually incentivising new business creation in a targeted fashion. In addition, what effect will this have on volunteering, a crucial cornerstone of wider social care since the cuts of the '80s and '90s?

Mind numbingly stupid and out of touch on so many levels, isn't it. Even if it was that simple to move on, who do they think is then going to do the low paid jobs once the previous post holders have moved on to better paid work? Those new people will then need support because the jobs will still be poorly paid. [Post edited 22 Sep 2022 8:55]

That will be the Government which ran an austerity policy that saw libraries shut across the land, disability benefits "refocused", people driven to suicide by a harsh benefits sanction regime, and the complete dismantling of local education services leading to the collapse of educational needs statementing for children eg on the Autistic Spectrum? I think there was more, but that's my off the top of my head list of cnt moves.

Indirectly they are via increased revenue from mortgages fuelled by interest rate rises.

To say nothing of the implicit cast-iron guarantee that the state will bail them out if all goes wrong - facilitating higher risk/ reward/ profits that pay the bonuses.

Yep. They’re going to be struggling to make many bonuses off the back of the markets right now though. They seem to be having a brain fart. My investment ISA has plummeted this year.

There'll always be about a third of the voting electorate that will back them, no matter what, but some of the extra 10% they need may actually be starting to see the light with any luck. I'm not holding my breath but that glimmer of hope is there.
