The man looks well, despite propaganda saying he’s not. Fit as a butchers dog. Shame he’s as mad as a rabid dog.

He’s talking absolute nonsense. He bases his whole argument on mythical historical greatness and moral superiority of Russia. His criticisms of the west are actually relevant to his country.

He’s proud of Russia’s anti colonial stance in in 20c. Russia - the land of tolerance and purity. The west at the end of the 20c stole 20 trillion dollars from Russia.

The bombing of Germany and Japan have been wheeled in now. Wow.

Raving.

Yep, the Anglo Saxons blew up the gas pipelines. Now there’s a surprise. Not

Anti-colonial stance?

Russia annexed half of Europe against their will and imposed their language and ideals on them, that's pretty colonial.

Is this a speech he's giving now?

He's been unhinged for ages, he's just showing it a lot more now.

Yep. He’s still ranting away. Makes Hitler’s dribblings seem reasonable.

The interesting angle is that Ukraine started the war in 2014. The annexed lands are their lands forever and they will do anything to protect their land.

The Soviets also bombed German cities (including Berlin) in WWII. They just lacked numbers of suitable aircraft to do the damage the Western allies could.

On the subject of colonialism, Russia absorbed most of Central Asia (the modern "-stans") and Siberia in the 19th century, plus interfering in Persia and China. Just didn't go after Africa, largely because it was more difficult for them to access, not due to lack of desire for colonies.

Their "anti-volonialism" in the third quarter of the 20th century was a means of damaging rivals than through altruism. The USSR jealously guarded thei own spheres (the Warsaw Pact, Afghanistan).

For what the Russians did to the German population and indeed their own people, Anthony Beevor’s book Berlin is as good a description as any. The holier than though moral high ground Putin was on about was the stuff of fantasy.

SB was quite right. It wasn’t a rant, it was more of an incoherent ramble. One bloke in the audience looked like his eyelids were drooping. Not good - he’d better keep the windows firmly closed.

As for the four saps that signed the document, they looked a sorry lot. Not sure what they were chanting when they all clasped hands. ‘Come on you blues’ maybe?

All the things he said, despite being clearly delusional are what you see parroted by his bots and gullible edgelords. Even Harry10 the other day suggested NATO provoked the invasion in order to get regime change and access to his oil.

Surely at this point we have to call his bluff on “catastrophic weapons” and help Ukraine continue their offensive. He’s been using the same threat for over 6 months with an increasingly worsening outlook for Russia in the war.

Biden has threatened severe consequences if he were to deploy any WMD’s although it’s not clear what that means. He’s clearly barking, but you’d hope his circle weren’t quite so reckless.

This is my view. Always do what the opposition don’t want you to do. If he bullies and threaten, he wants the west to back down, so the answer has to be up the support and throw the threats back at him.

Looking at the mugs in the audience, apart from the mad old bag in the front row I didn’t see too many looking forward to a premature death. Most looked bored and scared.

Can't blame them for trying, Putin literally doing whatever he wants and making a mockery of the NATO march East claims with him annexing lands and marching West.

I've only just seen the announcement and haven't watched his 'speech' yet (in some ways I feel I don't need to, the script has been predictable for a while now.) There was a BBC radio series charting the rise of Putin earlier this year ( https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/m0015nfd ) and it emphasised his KGB background so I do not ever expect him to tell the truth, information is just a tool to him, not a search for the fundamental realities of existence. Whilst much of the human race is deterministic and hoping to build good thing upon good thing to create a universal common good, leaders like Putin and Trump operate on a heuristic basis as they come in, see what the lie (sic) of the land is like and then seek to optimise matters for their own best benefit. Putin is much better at this than Trump, but the latter has not given up the game yet.

Control over information is one of the key parts of this authoritarian game and it is revealing that the approval for Russia's mobilisation shows a marked split between the younger generation (47% dare to show anxiety according to this report https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/9/30/half-of-russians-feel-anxious-angry-abo ) and an accepting older generation, who may not know who or what to believe so they go along with what the state tells them.

"Therefore, we are ready for a dialogue with Russia, but already with another president of Russia." - I think this would be a good propaganda narrative.

"We are de facto allies. This has already been achieved. De facto, we have already completed our path to NATO. De facto, we have already proven interoperability with the Alliance’s standards, they are real for Ukraine - real on the battlefield and in all aspects of our interaction.

We trust each other, we help each other and we protect each other. This is what the Alliance is. De facto." - All true of course, but I can't see NATO membership happening until after the war has finished. I can't see NATO deploying troops at this stage, which means putting this on hold.

It’s a bit what if, however I’ll give it a go.
1. Putin has declared 20% of Ukraine is Russia forever against every convention of what a sovereign state is.
2. Ukraine disagrees.
3. Ukraine joins NATO immediately along with Finland and Sweden. This means that Russia has attacked a NATO country
4. NATO reserves the right to hit back. So it tells Putin his airforce is grounded or destroyed and his navy returns to port or is destroyed.

What would Putin do? What would his flunkeys do? Looking in that audience, apart from the crazy old hag (looked a bit like Eddie Izzard) in the front row, I didn’t see a sea of happy faces. Just a load of scared bored people. Do they want to die? I don’t think so.

This is fantasy brinksmanship I know, but this is the game Putin is playing. The stronger his words, the more weakness I’m seeing, unless you take those words at face value

I don't think Putin plays brinkmanship, he plays chess. His best bet at the moment is to play for stalemate. He is still will lose some more of the Donbas but Russia will still retain enough to improve their position on six months ago. Not quite the victory that Crimea was but a grab back all the same.

As you say, it is not going to be politic for Ukraine to join NATO until the war is over. So the aftermath will be Russia claiming victory for extending its borders, NATO will have advanced its influence into Finland, Sweden and Ukraine. Let's hope that this new sharply defined division between Europe and Russia allows for Putin to step down in favour of a more conciliatory leader.

He looked awful a while back; pale, puffed up, bags, sweaty. But, yes, I agree that he now looks much better. It was the first thing I noticed when I saw videos of him the other day addressing the nation. Looks much more like his old self, unfortunately. He must have had a health scare, and is either over it or much improved.

To date he’s been a move ahead of everybody. I guess my idle speculation is about forcing him to make a move for a change, if we are using a chess analogy.

However, I think he’s pushed so far there’s no going back now for either side. I agree there is no way Ukraine in any form will be allowed to join NATO before the war ends and even that might form part of the settlement if Russia wins - and one metre of Ukraine territory ceded to Russia will mean they win.

It’s gone that far now. It’s all down to what the US want to do.
