What's up with Steve Baker (Tory MP)? 10:45 - Oct 4 with 1348 viewsSwansea_Blue

A couple of days ago he came out and said that the people of N Ireland require an apology over Brexit negs and outcomes. Now he's supporting taking the knee and saying it was wrong for people to go down the rabbit hole of 'cultural marxism'.

Seems to be going flat out to be seen as a sane voice in the party (unbelievably considering how he's acted over the last 6 yrs or so). Leadership bid in progress maybe?

A majority of only 4000 might have something to do with it. He’ll have time on his hands after the next election. Maybe he’s trying to do the grandee bit and oil his way into the House of Lords with its magnificent restaurant and fat expenses for turning up?

His politics are to the right and he’s an evangelical Christian, but he does have a very strong moral code on stuff like racism.

He’s been chair of the Conservatives Against Racism, For Equality group for a few years. His view on taking the knee is nothing new. He said the same thing last year.

This is the latest that you’re referring to.

I disagree with a lot if his politics but I do thinks he’s pretty honest and principled.

You don't have to be very bright to see that being closely associated with a bunch of right wing, extreme libertarians is not a vote winner.
He is not as big a fool as he sometimes appears to be.

Interesting thanks. Isn't his Brexit stance is a bit of a u-turn though? Or am I reading too much into it?

I think that it is painfully obvious to anyone with a brain that antagonising our biggest trading partner and making it very difficult for any British manufacturer who exports or imports is not a great idea. I think that reality is now hitting home with some of the Brexiteers.
Secondly, I think that they got a pretty blunt steer from the Americans on the Irish border/Good Friday Agreement question.
Thirdly, Catholics have just become a majority in the North, and Sinn Fein are becoming very powerful on both sides of the Border. It doesn't make a lot of sense to follow a path which flies in the face of an oncoming reality.

Not a strong enough moral code on racism to distance himself from the Conservative Party – the party that’s been demonising muslims and/or non-Ukrainian refugees for years. And the one that closes ranks to deny structural racism at every opportunity.

Let’s be honest.

This has got a forthcoming “yeah but Corbyn” type reply written all over it.

Nobody truly believes that though.

You’d have to be pretty radicalised to be pushing the “Corbyn is a racist” line in Oct 2022 given the flimsiness of the accusations when put against the actual evidence ...

Yeah, you’re probably right. 😀

Yep. I didn't even know "Conservatives Against Racism" existed.

Not sure what they've been doing for the last 20+ years.

i suspect this village idiot has never read Marx and is like most other dimwitted 'righties', merely bleating out a slogan, as with wokism.

For the record I have never read the Qu'ran, so would not make pronouncements based on what I have heard.

That the words 'cultural marxism' make about as much sense as hill climbing omelette should not come as any surprise. It is 'rightie speak', after all
