2 interesting FA cup stats 19:22 - Nov 8 with 5022 views | Daninthecampo | Stolen from the EADT Since that win in 1978, we have now featured in ten live FA Cup ties. Before Monday night, we had lost eight of the previous nine ties with only the 0-0 draw against Liverpool in the fifth round in February 1992 saving us from a clean sweep of defeats. And With just two wins in our previous 23 FA Cup ties, that put us 92nd out of all football league clubs, in terms of wins Terrible stats. Can only get better!
2 interesting FA cup stats on 19:28 - Nov 8 with 2860 views | Nthsuffolkblue | Is that correct? Only 10 times on TV at all since 78? Not one televised FA Cup match throughout the 80s that we won? That doesn't seem right. We had the record for consecutive seasons getting through the 3rd round around then didn't we? I don't think there is an easy to see list of televised matches is there?

I was surprised about that too! You'd expect the eadt to get it right

How many televised FA cup matches did we play in the 80s? Manchester United in 87 and, presumably, the semi final in 1981 but I’m not sure on that. Was there a full list of those matches? Off the top of my head: 87: Man Utd 92: Liverpool x2 94: Wolves 99: Southampton 17: Lincoln 20: Portsmouth 21: Barrow

Since 78 we got to: QF QF SF R5 R5 R4 QF R4 and QF in 92-93. Did we really have none of those 22 wins covered on TV? It feels odd that, especially when we were one of the biggest teams in the country in the late 70s/early 80s. I suppose they televised fewer matches.

Memory a bit hazy, but I think back then they only used to show one live match on TV per round (possibly both semi-finals?), so most clubs didn't get a look in to be featured.

The 81 semi final was on tv, but also looks like the 3rd round against villa was too, so i think that stat could be wrong!

I'm pretty sure the 81 semi-final wasn't live on TV. The 3rd round tie -v- Villa definitely wasn't. Edit to say, I haven't checked, but I'm pretty sure that live club games (apart from the Cup Final) were introduced after 1981. [Post edited 8 Nov 2022 20:08]

Replay against Southampton 2015 was on the BBC. The most annoying on that list was the home defeat to Wolves.

The only club game televised live before the mid-1980s was the FA Cup Final. Those 81 games were both Saturday 3pm kick-offs.

Thanks for that. I thought there was some thread on something like that not long ago. I presume we are confident that is comprehensive. How could we not have had a single live match between 78 and 88? Was there no live coverage of any of the UEFA Cup run? I suppose it easy to forget how little televised football there once was.

Your final sentence is the thing. Outside of finals, there was no live coverage of club football.

Ah, yes. I knew there was an obvious one which was why I left a gap. Wolves was pretty crap and then we played the same side against Arsenal on the Saturday (except Forrest got injured in get the warmup) and lost 5-1.

As Trumpton said, the first club live televised game outside of the FA Cup Final didn't take place until the mid 80s. I remember watching it, pretty sure it was a Friday night, Southampton v Liverpool (or possibly Manure). It was a good game from what I recall - Southampton won.

That's right. Highlights of the home leg were on Anglia TV, but I'm not sure whether they were broadcast the same evening. Highlights of the second leg were on the same evening, about 11pm, although we were treated to a newsflash earlier, well a few words at the bottom of the screen, to say that we had won the cup. Youngsters today- don't know they're born!

Domestic Live TV football matches outside of the cup finals only started in 1983/84 so that rules out QF,QF,SF,R5,R5 So that only really leaves the quarter-final and replay with Everton in 1984/85 which had highlights for both ties, but Barnsley v Liverpool was chosen for live coverage

I believe the first FA Cup Semi-Final to be shown live on tv was Liverpool v Nottingham Forest in 1989 (Re-scheduled after the Hillsborough disaster) [Post edited 8 Nov 2022 21:19]
