Apologies if this has already been posted.

Can’t argue with that.

I wonder if any of the people objecting to this fraudulently claimed furlough cash? This is a pittance in comparison (£700m for each 1pc increment vs £8bn).

I remember saying to a nurse friend in the mid 1980s how ridiculous it was that the NHS is forced to use agency nurses at far greater cost than those employed directly, because of shortages - the situation's been going on for decades.

Almost as if successive governments have lacked the brains, willingness to think & plan ahead long-term, fund more buildings & training places etc.

Dr Dan, of course, has largely either sat on his hands or has actively voted in favour of making conditions difficult for his former colleagues over the past decade.

Eff him, eff the rest of his government, etc...

Use of agency staff / consultants Etc is not exclusive to Public Sector, and there is a logic to it (imo flawed)

Fees are "one off" (hmm) expenses but wage increases are recurring expenses (sometimes referred to as liabilities).

For 16 years I worked for a company where 15% of my pay was a "bonus" that came from my line manager, but not fixed to a KPI - so, recession of 2009 and furlough 2020 this was an expense that was cut from company budget.

Which I imagine would be the "logic", however, as it's been an issue for decades it's clearly false.

My mother worked in mental health area of NHS for years and it was common knowledge that nurses would go sick with their area NHS and be working as agency staff with another area NHS. Many turned a blind eye on the basis everyone knew they should earn more.

The main difference between paying the nurses more directly and employment they an agency?
The unnecessary middleman taking their cut. Tory donors per chance?

Unfortunately he could and should have been making the same point about investing in and retaining staff at any point during the past couple of decades.

But joined-up thinking towards what is best for society, service quality and public sector workers is almost completely lacking from the right-wing Westminster consensus. Tories or Labour, they’re going to spunk money at filling gaps with more private companies and corporations.

This is a bit odd. We have a sitting Labour MP misrepresenting her party's position on the NHS.

Where is the misrepresentation?

Streeting is a right-winger who is going to plug gaps/boost profits with private enterprise.
In fact, that’s Labour’s approach to everything including the economy and climate change.

Simply shows how extreme this Government's policy against unions and public services is. Poulter is a long way from being a liberal.

There is no shortage of people applying for nursing courses. This government cut training places. At the same retention is a problem because the job is crap due to understaffing and better pay and conditions elsewhere. If only he'd been a Minister when all this was going on.

Poulter shouldn’t have a concern about retaining his seat, should he wish to do so.

I should have put ‘finally’ in the OP though.

I think it's time that a kings commission made from MPs of all parties is formed with a root and branch look at the NHS and then be the committee that oversees everything. For too long the NHS has become a political football and it's too precious and important to us as a nation to play party politics with it and it's time it was stopped.

A political football ?

or

one party doesn't see universal health care as what our governmenet should be spending money on. Why keep healthy a non productive worker. Let each individual mployers pay - via insurance that is based on how important that particular worker is to the company.

A commision can only make recommeddations, which is where PR falls on its ar se. As any Tory led coalition has the majority in any vote, and so makes the decisions.

And there is no need of a commision. Ask anyone who works in the NHS, it needs proper funding which will not happen under a government who does not believe in the concept of universal health care free at the point of use.

That wouldn't solve the root cause of the problem - this Government's determination to defund public services.

Defund, demoralise then privatise.

We cannot afford to pay these pay claims; teachers' pay rises have to come out of already-stretched budgets, etc, etc.

But when it comes to paying their relatives and donors for non-tendered and useless contracts, there is plenty of money available.

This is the most corrupt Government this country has ever seen. They hope this stand will be seen like Thatcher's standing up to the greedy unions. These unions are more akin to Oliver Twist begging for enough to fill his belly.

The independent King's Fund has been saying for the past decade that nursing staffing levels are too low, wages are too low and funding is too low.

We're apparently £350M a week better off since Jan 2021. Why is it such a sh1tshower?
