Office sweepstake - Zahawi 12:08 - Jan 23 with 2474 viewsHARRY10

I have drawn 4pm, as the time he will announce he is 'stepping down'

From elsewhere

"I had my shares in YouGov stashed in an offshore company in my dad's name, and so I avoided paying tax on them when the shares were sold for £27 million in 2018.

And then I didn't declare it when required to do so, both as an MP and a minister.

I've now been rumbled by HMRC and have been forced to pay a penalty of millions of pounds for tax avoidance."

But I am innocent of any wrongdoing

Though it does bring into question why Zahawi was made Chancellor by Johnson in July, as a cursory check would have shown Zahawi was under investigation.

Sunak is now being drawn into the same murky waters. Firstly by appointing him party chairman in October, and now this morning claiming he did not know anything about Zahawis tax avoidance when he, Sunak, defended him in Pariament last week. The question there being, knave or fool. Either one is not a good look.

As to the bloater, it is highly suspicious that a man involved in a loan to said gutbucket, is shortly afterwards made Chairman of the BBC.

Thursday lunchtime, after Sunak gets skewered at PMQs on the issue, works out it's not helping his cause and so he cuts him loose, accepting his resignation whilst maintaining he did absolutely nothing wrong.

Maybe looking at a bolthole, given how things are closing on him.

Quick hop over the border and he is safe with his old mucker, Putin.

I wonder if the Johnson £800K was a loan or a gift? If Johnson did not keep up the repayments then Richard Sharp just has to repay it, the loan then becomes a gift.

The allegation isn't that R.Sharpe lent Johnson the dosh, rather he helped him to get the loan by arranging a guarantor (and then got appointed BBC chairman by Johnson) - thus an undeclared conflict of interest at best, nepotism at worst.

It does seem very odd, given how the bloater boasters about his external earnings.

Why would he need an £800,000 'overdraft' ?

Is this, as with the Russian donations, where the son of a former KGB colonel was made a lord ?

Cos he said before he needs around £1m a year (KIds in private school, wife with expensive tastes, posh holidays etc.) for his lifestyle - and as PM there would be a lot more scrutiny than usual on donations, and no second income from his writing gigs...

So seems to me it was basically a loan to provide a lifestyle that he knew he'd be able to payoff once he left PM role (Book deal / speaking circuit etc.)

Better than taking donations from dodgy sources, but speaks to the man in terms of his lifestyle being a million miles away from normality.

Sunak is already putting in the groundwork:

"No 10 says Sunak was not aware of Zahawi paying penalty to HMRC when he defended him in Commons last week"

Urgent question in commons this afternoon too.

I'd say by 3pm tomorrow.

It does look increasingly like a question of when not if. What I never understand is why these things are allowed to drag on so long, making Sunak look weak and indecisive by his taking a week to do the necessary.

Utter tosh. Up there wirh Zahawis ludicrous guff about the tax payments 'resting in his account.

Who would be paying for this lifestyle after that 'loan'. The bloater had deluded himself that he would go on as PM for a couple of more terms.

This smacks on 'one good term deserves another', whereby the bloater is basically selling favours for money.

And however obvious it looks, there will always be some cap doffer willing to offer up some excuse for their 'betters'.

Actually there is no office, I have never worked in one either. Rather surprised that someone would take what was a light joke as being serious

Meanwhile they just keeping digging

"Stephen Timms (Lab) says Nadhim Zahawi went on TV and said his tax affairs were fully paid and up to date in the summer. But we now know that is not true, don’t we?

Jeremy Quin, the Cabinet Office minister says he does not know the answer to that."

eh ?

It is not a question requiring an answer. It is a clear statement. Zahawi was lying about his tax avoidance, just before he was appointed Challencellor of the Exchequer (you know, the person in charge of the countrys tax) by the bloater.

In fact this hapless minister spent the next 30 mins stating he did not know the answer - on the basis what was put to him could not be confirmed, however accurate, as it would infer that Sunak was also lying.

So why the hell did Sunak not get Zahawi to resign, rather than set off on this path of further damaging revelations ?

I suspect his maintenance payments add up too! He corrupts everything he touches and his legacy is lingering on with Zahawi’s corruption. I still can’t believe how many people fell for all his bull****.

Over the weekend we had

"when I was being appointed Chancellor, questions were being raised about my tax affairs. I discussed this with the Cabinet Office at the time." Zahawi

So no one from the cabinet office thought to speak out, as
"Oi fatty, I think you need to have a look at this before you appoint Zahawi"

Actually they did as prior to his appointment, officials of the Cabinet Office's propriety and ethics team had alerted the prime minister of a HMRC "flag" concerning Zahawi's tax affairs. So why did the bloater appoint him ?

Why in December did Sunak not ask for his resignation, as Zahawi had been put forward for a knighthood ? As part of the normal due diligence, Cabinet officials contacted HMRC in December. Zahawi subsequently did not appear on the list in the New Year.

And Sunak would have us believe he knew nothing of this, despite it being all over the media and his own cabinet office apparently blocking the knighthood.

As the old saying goes "Oh what a tangled web we weave when at first we practice to deceive"

And keep your eyes open. There's another Tory MP likely to hit the headlines for financial impropriety (false expenses claims). Quite well known as well.

But Sunak is weak and indecisive. Clueless too. What Zahawi is and has been up to has been known about for years, but Sunak and co view 99% of this country’s people as ignorant, gullible dirt.

What the plebs might think doesn’t matter. They’re not at the entitled top table. Zahawi’s ….’efforts’ are viewed with admiration not condemnation by them.
