Whymark is kind of forgotten, yet he was a really good player for us. Better on the ground than he was given credit for, I can’t imagine playing against him was much fun. He was a perfect partner for both David Johnson and Paul Mariner. It’s a real shame injuries prevented him playing in the cup final.
He made over 260 appearances for us and was an integral part of Robson’s first two good teams. I didn’t go to the Lazio game, but I did see the four he scored in the 7-0 demolition of West Brom.

Not underestimated or forgotten by me....quality player!
Ade Akinbiyi couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo...
I've just had a brief look but can't find anything, but absolutely love the story about Whymark being awarded a trophy by Roma fans before the game, proper p*ssing Lazio off.
I was there. A great night- only spoiled in memory by Lazio's disgraceful behaviour in the return leg. Whymark was my hero. My favourite Ipswich goal is still the one-two with Mariner and Whymark's (he got 4 that day) thumping drive in the 7-0 drubbing of West Brom.
I saw that game, the 7-0 West Brom game and the game against Landskrona Bois in the UEFA cup when he also scored 4. Pretty unusual to see one of your players score 4 let alone 3 times.
He played junior football at the same time I did - and regularly hitch hiked between Ipswich and Diss so he could play for Diss as well as Ipswich
Also worth pointing out it took years for Whymark, Talbot and Clive Woods to break into the first team. Nowadays they’d all be loaned out and discarded.

It would probably have been only 1 goal for Whymark that day if Warky had caught him with that uppercut after the second goal! (1m59s)

My favourite Town goal too. Never breaks stride, arrowing into the net. beats goal is mental, but fro sheer poetry, its Whymark. Even the copper applauds after his 4th!
Didn't Robson give him some sort of rollocking in training on the morning of the game, so he went home and started wallpapering his hall? Management or what!
