I read that Johnson is okay giving messages from a point in 2021 onwards, but those before that date were on another phone that he was told to stop using for security reasons. So he couldn't provide those messages before that date
I'm not sure if Johnson knew that WhatsApp messages are server based and should be retrievable from before that date.... maybe he does now know. I expect there was a WTF are you doing from the government towards Boris. Hence, this desperate challenge in the courts from the government to keep them hidden. [Post edited 1 Jun 2023 22:54]

They are saying that they know they'll probably lose the judicial review but they're going ahead anyway. Seems an excellent use of public funds during a cost of living crisis and economic stagnation for the government to be spending money bringing a judicial review against an inquiry that they themselves commissioned. I was listening to Alastair Campbell talking about this yesterday with Rory Stewart. He was saying the same about the Hutton inquiry. Blair set it up and was fully behind the inquiry but the Civil Servants weren’t happy when Hutton wanted Campbell’s and Blair’s private messages with civil servants.
He believes that Sunak is acting under advice from the civil service who are against releasing private messages as it would open up all private conversations between ministers and the civil service, which in turn would lead to less frank and honest discussions.
I’m sure that there is a lot if damning stuff from Johnson, especially as he speaks before he thinks, and Sunak would love to finally bury him. But this decision appears to be coming from Whitehall rather than Downing Street.
EDIT. Meant to add that both Stewart and Campbell concluded that all message should be handed over as requested. This is a serious inquiry and lessons need to be learned. [Post edited 2 Jun 2023 10:33]

This is now party political with Johnson's team, who have always wanted to bring down Sunak, seeing an opportunity to do so.
Johnson knows there is nothing overly incriminating in those messages for him, or nothing we didn't already know, so this is about who else and what else was said.
As someone else has pointed out, he is also only offering up information from May 2021 onwards, nothing from before. The most damning data and leaks so far was from the 12 months previously, so there is an assumption this is an easy 'win' for Johnson. |  | | |

Even if Johnson was told not to turn it on, someone must have to see what was on it and the possible security issues.
