This is also the rag which said we stormed out of the awards after McKenna was overlooked.

In the Sunderland documentary he made it clear he wanted a home and a place he felt wanted. He's still young yet been at a different club almost every year of his career. The therapy bit where he was speaking about why he doubts his own ability and who his role models are and he says 'mick mccarthy' for believing in him was really touching.

It’s a few weeks old, true tbf, was all over twitter when it happened, local Bradford journo said it. Obviously the Sun just sensationalises it all as per.

If it was BBC it would have been a true story then would it?

I think the people of Pembury would be quick to correct that to Royal Tunbridge Wells darling. Tonbridge is their lesser near neighbour, they’re very snobby like that. But yes, he’s spent his life and most of his career around there / S and SE London at least by way of permanent contracts. Can see why he would’ve chosen Gillingham over Bradford.

I think it is the case that people from both Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks look down on Tonbridge but it has a Norman castle, a river (the Medway) and three of the best secondary schools in West Kent (Tonbridge Grammar, Judd and Tonbridge School). My kids were born at Pembury but I, for one, would certainly not regard that as Tunbridge Wells. Interestingly, Shane MacGowan and Michel Roux were also born at Pembury.

I quite like Tonbridge fwiw, as you say it has a lot going for it and a bit less up its own backside than TW from my experience. I have family around there, had some good day sessions in Tonny. The nice bar on the river whose name escapes me, a few good pubs about and some decent bars. Certainly a little rougher round the edges than TW or Oneoak though.

The bar you are referring to may well be the one that has now been converted to flats, although there is another right next to the bridge. I think Tonbridge has changed a bit in the last ten years or so with quite a lot of flats attracting young families from London. Indeed, it now has two Green county councillors, but I quite like the fact that it is a bit rougher round the edges. And my mother, who lived in TW, always much preferred Tonbridge, not least because it was flatter. [Post edited 24 Jun 2023 18:41]
