Paul Parker’s comments about PL 18:44 - Jul 1 with 3752 viewsArnieM

Never a truer word said aiMO and a sad indictment of how the game has gone …

Man Utd legend Paul Parker: 🗣️ "The Premier League has become a circus, because it’s all about money. This circus division is slowly killing our game and taking anything good away from our football.

"There was a time, many years ago, when players signed for Man Utd because it was Man Utd. Today, players are signing for Man Utd because of… Yeah, god knows how many million they can earn.

"Man Utd are also guilty when it comes to ruining football in this country. They are not the only guilty club but they are not innocent."

Strange how fans and ex-players of Man U never said anything about that club splashing the cash on transfers and wages when they were the best club in England. Now that they aren’t, money is the root of all things bad in football. Strange.

Wages are out of control.

It was one thing when the best were on 50k a week but now they are on £200k+ per week. Average Prem players are now on £50k a week. Look at Man City. I can't help feeling completely ambiguous about their treble win. Who really cares when they just stacked the very best and paid them obscene wages?

I love football but it's a definite turn off when you see players on more per week than most of the fans earn in 10 years. A Man City fan earning £30k a year paying for their ST watching their team on obscene money. Just lessens the whole thing for me.

Truly impaired.

And it's a meaningless difference between £50k a week and £200k a week. It totally devalues money and life for the recipients. It's why so many billionaires give away their money, when they finally realise that the pursuit of money for money's sake leaves you a hollowed out shell with no appreciation for the truly valuable things in life. I speak from no experience, whatsoever!

Players only ever joined Man U for money. I'm sure when Parker joined Man U he didn't say "no, no scrap that contract you're paying me too much, I'm not joining Man U for the money"

Completely agree. Sadly, the control of the PL is the PL itself, so it's the old turkeys voting for christmas scenario. Yesterday I put a post up that MPs have said that if the PL doesn't ensure more cash flows down to the lower leagues, then they will intervene. I feel more strongly than ever now that the PL should only get 50% of the TV revenues, with the other 50% divided up amongst the rest of the pyramid. It would be so much better for the health of football at all levels, and maybe the top players would only be able to earn £200k per week instead of £400k or whatever it is. But I have no doubt that it would be good for everyone, including those top stars, for the very reasons you say.

Possibly. How are you defining ‘worse’ though. Are we talking about changes in average PL salary versus av wage nationally? Or amount total amount in the league spent on signings or wages? Total income across all clubs? Or disparity between the top earners and the rest and then lower leagues? Or does it matter? I suspect the gap is growing however you count the cash.

The money is obscene, no doubt. £65k per week is the average PL salary now (up from about £35k pre-Covid). That’s just under £3.4M a year to kick a ball about. Nuts. Plus any sponsorship. There’s a way to go yet though - top US sportsman earn in excess of $100M per year [mindblowngif].

In terms of the obscenity of the amounts involved and gaps with normal workers, it seems to be getting worse. The wage growth is well above what the rest of us are seeing. And although it’s a short career (something people often cite to justify the wages), they only need 1 season in the PL to be set for life for them and their families. So very different from how it used to be (although I remember the hooha around Trevor Francis being the first 1 million pound signing).

When you watch a blockbuster film do you feel the same knowing that the lead actor probably earns tens of millions for their role in it? Top golfers, the best F1 drivers also earn small fortunes.

Like it or not, the PL generates hundreds of millions of pounds in revenue so it’s probably only right that the ones who chiefly make it so lucrative earn a lot of money.

And just to follow up on that, I suspect players were signing for Man U in the mid-90s for the money when Parker was there. It’s naive to think they weren’t. As soon as Sky entered the market with their first deal in 92, it helped distort the finances favouring the larger clubs.

Fair point.

I think the difference for me personally is that I love football. I don't really care about football or golf. Maybe I am just getting older but it just feels different.

I have Sky and BT Sport so maybe i'm a hypocrite.

The PL had an operational income of £5.5 billion in its last full year. Average player salary £65k per WEEK..

The NHS had an operational income of £105 billion in its last full year. Average salary £31k per YEAR.

Being a bit cheeky here, but the PL is not big by national standards. It’s also humungously skewed towards the players, while other workers in clubs get borderline living wage. I understand where you’re coming from, as ‘the stars’ always fetch a premium; it doesn’t make it any less obscene though.

Personally I don’t really resent the absolute worlds best of the best getting those levels. It’s ridiculous of course but they are the absolute best of the best in such a massive global industry. Mbappe, Neymar, Haaland, Kane. If they’re earning £15m a year or more then fair enough really. Tom Cruise and Christian Bale earn stupid money because they sell. Tiger Woods does for the same reason.

What I find most ridiculous is the salaries for younger players. They’re the equivalent of RADA students or young golfers who aren’t yet in the top 1,000 globally who, understandably, don’t earn big from it unless they truly make it. Footballers now get so much so young at big clubs, before they’ve proven a single thing. Carney Chukwuemeka At Chelsea, he’s 19 and played a handful of games and he’s reportedly on £100k a week already. Some even younger kids there will be on £500k a year. It’s ludicrous.

Wages aren’t the problem, it’s the fact that despotic, murderous states, money-laundering oligarchs and hedge funds can buy the game (along with golf, cycling and most other sports).

Average players on 50k a week, Man Utd are paying Maguire £190k per week, how’s that for an overpaid average premier league player

You can’t compare the PL to the NHS - that’s if you are. The PL generates its income whereas the NHS receives its budget from central government. If the NHS income of £105 billion was generated rather than given, then it’s average wage would be a lot more than 31k per year.

You are right, PL clubs in particular should pay non-paying staff more.

Paul Parker’s comments about PL on 23:08 - Jul 1 with 2480 viewsMark

The vast amounts of money PL players get is in stark contrast to the problems many supporters face due to the cost of living crisis. I do wonder if people will start switching off soon. TV subscriptions are expensive, and if Man City continue to win pretty much everything it will become boring. Newcastle might have the funds to challenge them, but from Saudi Arabia. Add in VAR, so many substitutions, and the bombardment of advertising during the match...

100% agree. I don’t blame the players for getting the deals, but clubs are in a complete financial mess because of them. You can be a young lad at Chelsea or a club with a similar status, just out of the PDP, no first team experience and earn 100k a year. This ultimately has a knock on effect higher up the food chain. For me, players are getting the financial rewards far too early for very little. I’d also question the level of ambition this then has on those players, it impacts on their attitude and desire. Playing copious amount of professional first team games becomes secondary.
