Where to begin: - Trump's X (Twitter) interview with Putin patsy Carlson draws 100 million+ views and is given credence by millions, despite being littered with lies and conspiracy - a Trump witness has just turned and is basically stating the deleted videos of classified document misuse at Mar Largo - Chris Christie is the only Republican candidate to call out the 'big lie' in the candidacy debate and the pernicious nature of Trump, the others are too scared to call it - there are heavily armed militia patrolling schools and carrying out open carry protests, in military attire and with assault weapons in Virginia and other states - gun violence is becoming endemic and accepted - these figure are loony tunes - https://abcnews.go.com/US/116-people-died-gun-violence-day-us-year/story?id=9738

Are there any historical parallels where an empire / massive state has collapsed into a mass of fighting factions as law and order breaks down, because individuals have become so obsessed with acquiring personal wealth by any means, at the expense of the demise a decent, caring, functioning society in which to enjoy real wealth? Not a loaded question, I'm not much of Anne historian.

There are a lot parallels being made to the moral decline from 1950s America to today... much led by right wing politics and militarisation.. but now being massively amplified by social media and the rise of partisan news outlets... Murdoch has his role, if small. I think America's role on the world stage was massively effected by Trump. But the issue in America is perhaps linked capitalism and to your point. A low taxation policy for decades, with limited distribution of wealth, and money moving up has caused major issues.. the underclass are growing exponentially, gun saturation and killings have been normalised, and infrastructure is of such poor condition. This is a feeding ground for populism, for post truths. I know I sound like a ranting loon when it comes to this topic, somewhat obsessive. But I do think some collapse of USA society is inevitable.. and indeed happening. Millions and millions of people have normalised the storming of their capital building and are supporting a charlatan crook. I find bonkers - hence the focus - and a lesson for UK PLC. We allowed Farage for example to remove our access to Europe.. cannot go further.

So like Britain now but with lots more guns. In all seriousness, it's hard to see any kind of pushback from 'truth' against 'post-truth' because post-truth has all the shiny new misinformation tools it needs to create total anarchy. [Post edited 24 Aug 2023 12:59]

I'm not saying everything on GB News and Talk TV is negative.. But its the start of a slippery slope, where revenue is made by creating factions and discontent. Both channels seem very free of regulatory insight and rigour - unlike the BBC - that 'Coast Guy' is spouting unchecked conspiracy

Yes, income inequality in the U.S. increased by about 20% from 1980 to 2016 & while this has levelled off somewhat, the top 5% are still increasing their share. Unfortunately, many of those left behind have chosen to attach themselves to Trump & his ludicrous populism.

What used to strike me when I first working over their in the late 90s, is the sheer scale of consumption and energy/resource usage - those 10+ lane motorways in California.. the scale of food and sugary drink consumption and the subsequent waste... So different and far from Europe and UK values Beyond almost Dubai levels of wanton consumption on scale! Why on earth we would want to align closer to them than Holland, Denmark and Germany has always baffled me. Fox News and social media was petrol on a flame. New York and London are different world cities.. taking public transport alone. Its a small planet and we'll have to share it with this crazy state. China will make hay as they descend into chaos. Trump is as guilty as sin. Carlson is a pernicious influence. Yet millions upon millions validate. Ranting over.... I must lie down.

Let's add to this that the person deemed to have had the best reception in the 1st debate for the republican nomination was the one that called to end aid to Ukraine and pardon Donald Trump if he's convicted. Half(ish) of America is very gullible

I don't think anything that has been issued is the problem in the US. It is just that such stuff is given more coverage now. And those once seen as mad or dangerous are now not only given a platform, but are often elected. By and large my understanding is the US is fairly level headed when you go beyond the third world health (un) care system and the El Salvadorean type fixation with guns. And the above level of stupidity is nothing new. We imagine that the clever technology in today's society must mean we are the cleverest humans in our long history. We are not. In fact, a good deal of that technology has removed the need to think, or work out things. Meaning, stupidity now spreads just as virulent as Covid. It is said that the poor are always with us. It should include, with the thick never far behind.

American conservatism has become a toxic mixture of guns, fundamentalist religion, anti-abortion and racism. The reactionaries of the south and mid west who used to be divided between the two political parties are now all gathered under the Republican umbrella. Libertarian leanings are confined largely to tax cuts for the rich, and a blind eye is turned to book banning in the state of Florida and elsewhere. Anti-intellectualism has always been a strong strain in US life, and is obviously an important component of populism, as it has become of the Right in the UK. George Will's assessment of the state of US conservatism is worth a read. https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2021/09/17/future-politics-conservatism-g

You clearly don't understand the "special relationship", which as far as I can see involves us supporting the USA in most of their idiotic overseas military incursions.

The problem with being 'libertarian is you always need the grown ups to clear up after you. Society has evolved, and still ,dependent on people recognising their responsibilities, rather than wailing about their 'rights'. In Nordic countries behaviour that US libertarians would shriek was soshalism, is seen as merely a sensible way to run things. It is whether you see the individual as benefitting from being part of a greater concern, or you see it as the individual being oppressed by that greater concern. The irony there is that where rightwing thinking holds sway, that greater concern (state) is often the most oppressive. The US where the police are all too often regarded as an occupying force. For me, it is the tolerance and community awareness of those Nordic countries over 'I'm alright Jack' individualism. As all too often the latters exponents aren't 'all right Jack'. And the supposed individualism is merely a means for less democratic control, and community support.

Yes please go and lie down, you’re embarrassing yourself. Are you going to build a high speed rail Network throughout the United States to get rid of interstates? Did you skip Geography class? As you specifically mention California and NYC… London / New York and California are more closely aligned politically than they have ever been. You could argue the US is more left than the UK since 2020 in most liberal demographic areas. Look at ultra progressive Mayors that have been voted in all over the map. Unfortunately San Francisco and a few other cities are finding out the hard way what some of these policies can result in. When it comes to diets and the love of sugar, that’s the West in general. Quite frankly these days (having lived in all three), I see more fat people in Suffolk than in Southern California, the North East/New York. You can’t walk a block without seeing a smoothie bar or vegan cafe in the Lower East side, Wicker Park,Logan square or the majority of SD/LA and most major cities. Also, cable news has about 500k viewers a night these days. [Post edited 25 Aug 2023 5:44]
