Rangers getting thrashed yesterday, Hearts and Hibs in the easier Europa conference league getting thrashed and it looks like Aberdeen are getting knocked out of the Europa league too. Its not so much that they are out but the aggregate scores are terrible.

And even Rangers have yet to recover fully from their enforced demotions a decade or so ago. Celtic, on a good day, could account for a few scalps, but generally the standard is woeful. Certainly Aberdeen are nothing like the team Fergie brought to P.R. in 1983. They're being played off the park at the moment, aren't they?

Aberdeen are a bit unfortunate to be behind, in fairness. Hibernian in the first leg and Hearts in the second were humilated though, not to mention Rangers last night.

Being fair, a lot of Scottish cities do not really have the population to sustain big attendances. I think that Scotland has one of the highest ration of population-to-football attendances in Europe but it still results to fairly average gates by English championship standards.

People knowledgeable of Scottish football on 21:39 - Aug 31 with 1606 views | skinnybob72 | The TV deal and other sponsorship in Scotland is tiny compared to a lot of the other countries, and not just the big 5 leagues. The teams outside of the Old Firm rely massively on gate money as it makes up a huge percentage of the revenue, which is completely the opposite of the Premier League. I was at Hearts home European games and against the Greek team the difference in first touch was the thing that really stood out. It gave them so much more time on the ball whereas Hearts second touch was generally a header or a tackle! There's still too much 'blood and thunder' in the Scottish game which got you so far way back but European teams got wise to that a long time ago, and now their better technique almost always wins through.

Two weeks before they drew 2 each with OSV. Last year they beat the same team over two legs. The season before, they got to the final of the UEFA Cup, beating the likes of Dortmund and Leipzig in the way. Outside the Old Firm the standard is pretty crap though. No youth prospects coming through of the standard of yester year. Any that do, get snapped up for a pittance from English teams or go to Northern England academies. No recruitment that generates any value. If you look at the talent that Celtic had brought in a few years ago, it was a great model. This summer's window has been horrific and from review, they only have a few 'sellable' assets. If you look at Rangers, they rave about Cantwell... He's dross. TV money (nothing). Investment. Owners of Scottish football clubs cannot afford any investment. Celtic owners notoriously don't put any of their own money in to be (sustainable). Rangers are shambles at the top (complete board reshuffle - they should have took me on why I applied for the CFO role). Even smaller SPL teams just have local business owners who don't want any part of it and I can understand why.

Hence why a move to Rangers or Celtic for a decent player in their 20s is a waste of a move. A handful of big games a season and the rest of the time they're playing against the Dog & Duck.
