Honestly, what do you get out of the relentless negativity? All that lovely food, wine and surroundings in France and this is the best use of your time. Your climate contributions yesterday were particularly idiotic. SB

Difficult to square being a franchise follower with concern for the end of the world I’d have thought. A once local club shopping locally for players now financed long distance by carpetbaggers from one of the very countries that is destroying the earth.

Far away places like Ipswich, Ipswich, Aberdeen and Newcastle per our last back 4 and Cardiff, Bangor, Portsmouth and Sheffield per our last front 4. Or Essex, Surrey, London, Manchester & South Wales per the 5 subs that came on. Good one Elephant, coming in with another embarrassing take.

Remember the good old days when everyone in the squad was a proper Suffolk boy? Like Surrey born Roy Bailey. Like Edinburgh born Billy Baxter. Like Liverpool born Larry Carberry. Like Aberdeen born Ken Malcolm. Liek Nant-y-derry born John Elsworthy. Like Edinburgh born Jimmy Leadbitter. Like Brynteg born Aled Owen. Like India born Reg Pickett. Like Crook born Reg Stephenson. Like Portsmouth born Ray Crawford. Like Dublin born Dermot Curtis. Like Musselburgh born Doug Moran. Got to miss those days back in the early 60's when Town players truly represented Ipswich and the county of Suffolk. Shambles what the club has become. If only we had more Ipswich born and raised players in the current squad than we did in 1962. [Post edited 11 Sep 2023 12:34]

Go back still further, to the first game of Ipswich Town's professional era - a 4-1 home win over Tunbridge Wells Rangers in the Southern League on 29th Aughust 1936. Not a single player in the Ipswich team was born in Suffolk. Four of the 11 were born in Scotland (Thompson, Cowie, McLuckie, Bruce) and another two in Wales (Parry, Williams). The English-born players came from Henley-on-Thames (Houldsworth), London (Perrett), Aylesbury (Carter), Eccleshall, Staffs (Blackwell) and Handsworth, Yorks (Dobson). What Elephant is harking back to is the amateur era. Of which I very much doubt he saw any games.

If the way the club is now owned and run in modern times is so abhorrent to you, why do you stick around? Follow Ipswich Wanderers or something. Last i heard, they're a club with a squad of local lads and dont have American owners. Toodle Pip!

I think you’ll find that the club didn’t have a local recruitment policy until a certain much-maligned Geordie manager created it - but don’t let idiocy blind you to reality. And the club was based in Ipswich then believe it or not - not run from a flyover state.

Care to give an example of the clubs in the top 2 tiers of the English professional game with a squad of local lads? Perhaps a 'gold standard' that we should be following?

Portman Road is still very much based in Ipswich and in the same location that it has been for many a year. The local team are still very much the decision makers but are accountable to the owners who stay a respectful distance. Your arguments against the present owners all seem to stem from casual xenophobia and your disregard for players that aren’t local is also distasteful. In the 70s I bet you objected to the club signing two Dutchmen. And I bet you hated the fact that Spurs signed a couple of South Americans. [Post edited 11 Sep 2023 13:17]

Yes they were unlucky, not least as the welsh gave away several penalties before anyone was carded, but it seemed the Fijian guy was carded for just one. It seemed playing as a team in Super Rugby and having players at European teams is making a difference. Also helps that the Kiwis has stopped nicking their players not that we would do that obviously, I'm sure Aki comes from a small little know village in Donegal

Couldn’t agree more. It was so refreshing. Unlike that awful spectacle in watching South Africa suffocate the life out of the game. If only Fiji learned how to defend and kick!

If having players playing abroad is beneficial for them how come English players cannot play in France without calling time on their international career? Different sports I know, but Bellingham and Kane will become better players for playing in another league and being exposed to a different footballing culture.

Cos the RFU, worried there would be a mass exodus of players to France where the team funding is/was different and much better contracts were being offered, made the rule that if you didnt play in the English League you couldn't pay for England This may help https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/mar/28/english-rugby-union-players-going- [Post edited 11 Sep 2023 14:01]
