Budgieland geography 22:09 - Oct 29 with 3432 views | NthQldITFC | It's many a long year since I went to an away game at the nasty, smelly little place that is Carrot Road, so I've just been having a look on Google street view to re-familiarise myself with it. Not that I stand the remotest chance of bagging a ticket this year. It's a rum old place from the outside is it not? All higgledy-piggledy. As I remember, we used to have to go down beside the stadium (NE on Carrow Road after crossing the little bridge?) then round the corner and into that end. Is that right? It says 'Barclay Stand' on the outside, but that's their home end now isn't it? Lots of generic new build apartments all round the place now, which either spoil it or improve it depending on your point of view, I suppose. They 'spoil' it for me. Where are the police horses going to chase you in all that gubbins? I'm sure I remember having to climb up a grassy bank either inside or outside the turnstiles to get in too! Or maybe that was just the drugs? [Post edited 29 Oct 2023 22:14]

Budgieland geography on 06:55 - Oct 30 with 3162 views | Pendejo | I looked at street view a few years ago to see how it'd changed, but retail area between station and ground now isn't there? There was a grassy bank behind Barclays, but there were also stairs. From the top of the bank / stairs were goading opportunities over the dividing walk (?) I've not been to Carrer Rud since spring 95 defeat (0-3) in which Wark was sent off. I had said I wouldn't go back again, but next spring is beginning to look attractive, possibly with it without a ticket. Depending on a scenario that is unreal yet seemingly possible.

Ah! So we used to go from the top of the grassy bank into the end of the side stand adjacent to the Barclay stand did we? I don't recall seeing any wrath in there, just a lot of digits.

I see they have a street at one end called Geoffrey Watling Way. He was Vice Chairman at the time of the fire. The Geoffrey Watling way was to make sure that "We are obviously fully insured" I can see why they want to honour him.

Budgieland geography on 08:39 - Oct 30 with 2899 views | Churchman | I haven’t been to their since 92 when we sat at the River End amongst the multi-digit mob. Strange ground with the end stands bigger than the rest of it. I first went in the 1970s. We used to take in the odd game there when we were staying at my grandmother’s in Yarmouth. Something to do, something to laugh at. The games were always terrible. The first one was v QPR and finished 0-0. Aside from the game being about as bad as it could be and QPR letting me down, my overwhelming memory was the stand. We stood in a big old stand at the side. It was made of wood and I think it was the one that accidentally got burned down so triggering a massive insurance pay out. I’m sure they’d have preferred to keep the old one. It smelt of rotting wood, damp, body odour, body fluids, cigarettes and decay. Much as I like Norfolk, Carrot Rud is somewhere that I’ve no desire to ever see again - and probably won’t. They weren’t fully insured they had to beg Norwich Union to do the honourable thing. Why they ended up with the low level single tier stand they have and not a much bigger two tier stand they wanted. Lived and worked in Norwich at the time. Went once a year when got a free ticket , helped do the annual hospital commentary collection, worked with Roy Waller.

So, not only did they accidentally let the stand burn down, but they hadn’t paid the insurance premiums either. Ooops! Low level it might be, but it’s still better than the unlit bonfire I stood on.

I think they do have plans to add a tier to that small stand at some point but isn't it quite close to what looks like a main road? That will be some logistical challenge! I always thought their lack of spending in the Prem was so they could build that much desired stand, to satisfy their thirst for attendances I still have no idea how they spent so much in their last stint there on some incredibly ordinary players

May as well put that on hold given their decline and the fact they can't even sell out the tinpot gound as it is. I went last year, but to see the Killers not a football game and hated having to drink out of cups with that logo on

Budgieland geography on 11:27 - Oct 30 with 2558 views | woodbridge_blue | It's tradition for me and WB Junior that whenever we take a train into Norwich, we always direct a gesture towards Carrot Road as the train meanders past. Imagine our delight recently when we looked towards the ground and saw two massive mounds of gravel, completely obscuring the ground. A much better view all round. Last week I had to get a train into Norwich, and sadly one if the mounds had gone, but thankfully half the ground is still out of view.

Point of correction - the stand that burned down was seating only so you would not have been able to 'stand' in it in the 1970's. You could have stood opposite in what was the South Stand so maybe you're confused. That was not made of wood however (just to add to your confusion). That QPR game was indeed 0-0 and was in October 1971. We won the Second Division championship that season. Perhaps you could remind me of the score at Portaloo Road in August 1972 in the Old Farm Derby?

You and Ullaa are both much to be admired in your stoic absorption of many childish barbs, particularly from the likes of me, on here.

Budgieland geography on 16:24 - Oct 30 with 2202 views | Meadowlark | Several years back, I attended a 3 day conference for the industry in which I worked which was held at the UEA. The official dinner was to be in the Delilah Suite at Carrot Row, so I naturally declined the invitation. However pressure was applied and I reluctantly agreed to go, but I stated that I had never and would never set foot in the place without wearing a protective Ipswich Town shirt. They thought I was joking, but I turned up at the formal black tie dinner wearing the Greene King home shirt. I still have the official photographs somewhere.

I could have sworn the terrace floor was wood and I’m sure I stood, but I was about 10 years old so apols if I got that wrong. I’ve a memory that Graham Paddon and Kevin Keelan the keeper played for Norwich but again that’s purely on memory. I spent years thinking John Wark headed the killer goal in the other corner in the FA semi-final and I was 7 years older then! I think we lost 2-1 in the home game in August. Bit of a shock really because that was about the start of Robson’s really good sides. I could look it up but it’s a good test of my failing memory. Edit: and NtholdITFC is perfectly right in yours and Ullaa/Stow’s admirable resilience to the childish stone throwing from the likes of us. Yep, 2-1. I remembered that right. The away game in November was 0-0 [Post edited 30 Oct 2023 19:40]
