Millwall weren't that bad 06:35 - Nov 30 with 2027 viewsDarth_Koont

They worked hard at the start of each half and looked quite tidy and bright on the occasions they got time on the ball in our half.

But they just couldn't live with us when we got into our rhythm. The quick passing and movement from back to front, side to side and through the middle left them frequently chasing shadows.

It's a style that can look a bit scrappy and careless in possession when we don't connect with each other. But yesterday showed why McKenna keeps us doing it as it's how we get to a completely different level.

Beautiful stuff! And just the confirmation we needed that we can go all the way this season.

(Scoring first also makes a difference)

Agreed. As much as we were good, they were pretty poor, especially with the ball. Looked exactly what they are, which is a team in transition between two styles of play.

Similar to us vs WBA on Saturday I thought. It would be easy to say they were poor but it does a disservice to how well we played. They couldn't get near us in the first half and Morsy/Luongo were superb. They were psychologically beaten before half time.

They were no West Brom that's for sure.

But I still think we made them look worse than they are. Going 2-0 down early on probably didn't help them either.

We definitely caught Millwall at a good time when they are trying to learn to play out from the back and keeping a high line to squeeze press. A suicidal way to play against this team as we just tear that set up to shreds as are just on point with pressing triggers and attacking patterns plus the directness of how we pass vertically

Hopelessly naive from them, and whilst we were very good and executed well there’s no way we ever lose that game against that set up - we are too good to do so

First half they looked like they didn't know how to play. After both goals I noticed all their players looking over to the bench with their arms outstretched as if to say "now what?". They were very much stuck between two styles and didn't do either very well. That was of course exacerbated by us being bang on it from the first minute but I'd have them down as the worst side we've played at PR so far.

Millwall were garbage. They only started playing after getting their goal in the final ten minutes. And even that bit of pressure didn’t last.

A team that had no confidence and no visible game plan.

They seemed to have got it completely wrong tactically.

That direct vertical passing (I think I understand the modern terminology!) is absolutely incredible at times. That ball that Chaplin bends inside to out around the full back for Burns... it's kind of supernatural how often they get it right - to do that with just the right pace on it consistently is remarkable stuff. You'd often see players trying that in the past and lifting it too much, overhitting it, or hitting the fullback, or the receiver not being fully committed and giving up the chase, but this lot are just so trusting and fine-tuned and positive it's unreal. There must also be a lot of work goes into that from the midfielders and Hirst in opening up the space for that ball.

I've NEVER enjoyed watching Town half as much as I do now, they're just fantastic.

Not sure many teams at this level would have lived with us. Saying that, it doesn't always work, and we are going to over or under hit passes or get blocked at times. As happens to literally every team at whatever level.

The three goals! The second one especially was ridiculous.

It’s just nice that we arent THAT Ipswich anymore, that when teams aren’t playing well they arrive here and take a confidence boosting 3 points.

Teams that come here and think they can knock us off our stride get found out quickly - the only way to hurt us is to try and see out periods of the game when we are on top, no one can go toe to toe at PR

Sorry but I thought Millwall were terrible. Gave us far you much space, often passed straight out of defence to a Town player. Based purely on that performance, worst team I've seen us play this season.
To be fair their mgr is trying to change their style of play which will take time. But Millwall fans were really moaning after they lost 3nil at home Coventry on Saturday. After watching them last night I can see why. I doubt we'll have an easier game all season.

Sloppy passing out from defence, and left us so much space in the middle it invited attack after attack. Tactically they got it wrong, and as you say, presumably they will get better so quite a fortuitous time to play them.

Or did we make them look so poor , their last 6 always reads won 3 drawn 3 , they went to Plymouth and beat them 3-0 , so not such a poor team as we would like to think .
Town come out with a purpose last night and Millwall didn’t have an answer …..superb first half to watch.

The second goal was just a filthy team goal with tight light touches and a smashing finish.
I think we spread it from left back through Chaplin, out wide right and then back in with one-two touch footie. Need to watch it back because it was just orgasmic.

I would say we knew the space they like to use and we did a fantastic job on them, much the same as Baggies did to us. It reminded me of the Southampton game in that way, we forced them to pass to where a team mate was waiting for the ball.

I thought Millwall looked like the side they are, I don't think they're a bad squad of players at all, they've actually got some really good ones IMO. They just looked tactically lost, which is perhaps inevitable with a new manager.

They played into our hands really. Said on here before the game it was a big night for Burns, he had the capability to have them on toast, which he did. I was excited to see him 1-on-1 against Wallace, I think they were probably fearful of that themselves as what we saw more often was him up against Longman, who isn't a defender and it showed. Complete mismatch and won us the game within 12 minutes in reality.

I kind of get what you mean, I thought they were alright in patches but I think you can say that about all teams in the championship. Most teams have at least two or three decent players and can look good when given the opportunity.

As you say, when we are at it, we are just a wonderful team to watch in full flow. EPL class in terms of some of our movement. I think our only issue is we can be a touch naive when we step off the gas so to speak and usually concede pretty lame goals from a defensive point of view. KMc will sort this I've no doubt!
