Marcus Harness 09:15 - Dec 13 with 1703 views | DJR | I thought he had a cracking game last night. He barely misplaced a pass, retained possession well and made quite a few blocks, interceptions and tackles. [Post edited 13 Dec 2023 13:10]

Marcus Harness on 09:32 - Dec 13 with 1603 views | nrb1985 | Agree. I was critical of him earlier in the season and back end of last year but he's really stepped up well in the last couple of months. Ditto Harry Clarke who not too long ago looked destined to be the understudy RB for the rest of the season. Well done both them.
Marcus Harness on 09:42 - Dec 13 with 1536 views | SaleAway | His anticipation is amazing. So many times last night he got to balls that he had no right to. He's not especially quick, but just seems to be on the way to where he needs to be a bit before everyone else.

I think Broadhead really stepped up the standard when it came to composure and decision making but Harness is probably both a bit faster than Broadhead, generally quite positive and probably a bit more tenacious defensively as well? Where I thought we could have done better across the team last night was our decision making and first touches at times, we were quite sloppy for periods of the game We got the job done ultimately but we can definitely be better than that. I think much like West Brom, Watford have a good chance of pushing towards the playoffs, as the season goes on

Agree that decision making in final third and the final ball let us down a lot yesterday. That said, it's been a very hard schedule especially with the long trip on Saturday so it was never likely to be a vintage performance. A win is a win under those conditions and a very good one at that, at a hard place to go.

Thought we were comfortable mostly but agree some of our first touches and 1 touch passing was a little off at times. Watford had not much, very direct and looked to switch it early and get crosses into the box. Not a great footballing side but can see why they are on a decent run as lesser teams would have been bullied.
Marcus Harness on 10:14 - Dec 13 with 1294 views | LankHenners | Certainly found a lot of space when drifting inside, worked hard and generally used the ball well (certainly better than he has done) but do think there's a strange reaction to him where he gets appraised like he's an ill man in a charity match sometimes. Completing fairly straightforward things gets him labelled as 'excellent', 'outstanding' etc. whereas if someone like Broadhead or Chaplin does it it's taken for granted (as it should be really). Right now this is his absolute max level, probably above it in all honesty, he's generally too sloppy with the ball (although in fairness last night Broadhead got knocked off it too easily when he came on) and technical ability isn't close to our other attackers but the biggest compliment to him is that he is able to contribute meaningfully from time to time when necessary.

In the attached July thread I described Harness basically as a good team member; character; an asset/useful squad member. Having seen him live he’s better than that. He, like Burns, has a happy knack of finding spaces and places the opposition don’t like. Like so many of our players, he knows where the goal is too. He’s a good player who I thought did well last night.

I would say Clarke has probably been more consistent than Williams and has more measured demeaner. However, Williams offers the squad a bit of that nastiness and fire which is also a must. Williams and Clarke will also both get better as the season goes on. Back to the original topic, yes, Harness has been a great player for us and has really stepped up to the Championship.

I think labelling him as sloppy with the ball is harsh. He has a way of making the ball stick to his feet and we know that retaining possession is vital to KMac's system. He also has 7 goal contributions this season so I'd argue that is better than contributing from time to time. Add in that defensively, he provides good cover for Leif when he wants to push on and he fits the bill perfectly.

Indeed, I didn't jump for joy when I saw Harness's name in the starting XI, but he was excellent last night. He kept closing down the opposition in the final third, which was partly why we won the ball back from Watford in dangerous areas in the first half. The sort of energetic performance you need from a player on a tough away night, especially in the frenetic hurly-burly of the first half hour.
