Burnley and Sheff U 15:28 - Mar 3 with 2288 viewsgainsboroughblue

May as well put the (R) beside their names on the table now. Hope this isn't what awaits us if the dream happens.

Happy to bet they won't be on 70 plus points after 35 games a year from now. God we choose our seasons.

You can bet your bottom dollar that if we make it up this year it will require a record total next year for survival!

Even if it does. £100m in the bank. Much improved prospects of going back up if used wisely etc etc

A large chunk of that to be used for securing McKenna on a very long deal?

It will just our luck for them to stop, or cut parachute payments.

Exactly this.

Also, a great opportunity to gain category 1 academy status / fund the redevelop of the Cobbold / develop the training ground.

You'd hope the quality of our manager and backroom staff could actually keep us in the division. People wrote off the likes of Brentford, Brighton, Palace et al, who all added shrewdly. No need for a Nottingham Forrest reckless spending approach.

Burnley got 101pts last season. Town are on track to accrue slightly less so I would suggest that Burnley were every bit as good as the current top 4.
Yes, the others weren't as good, so promotion this season will be a bigger step.
Still dreading Town finishing 3rd or 4th & then losing to the Budgies in the play offs.

On the other side of the coin, Luton have a real chance of staying up, and they have spent diddly squat.

Forest are about to get found out by trying the other, buy your way to 17th spot, way of attempting survival.

This is probably the toughest Championship season in terms of the teams in it, so the points haul is more impressive this year when you have Sheffield Wednesday, Plymouth, Ipswich, Leicester, Southampton, and Leeds all coming into the league.
Also, teams that are equipped to get promoted aren't always best equipped to either stay up or excel in the league above. There are countless examples of teams that finish below another team and get promoted and perform vastly better than the team that won the league. You need look no further than Plymouth and Ipswich. The last time we got promoted to the Premier League we went up via the playoffs and finished 5th.
I think KM is growing as a manager. He is learning to be a bit more adaptable within his principles. I wouldn't be shocked if we did well in the Premier League or if we struggled against quality opposition. The only times we have played Premier League teams recently has been in the cups and we have looked decent with our reserve team.

They didn't have to play 3 other teams heading for the same points total.

Probably would have put a dent in that points total.

Listening to some Burnley fans on the radio last night, they were questioning whether the additions in the summer were actually upgrades? Many of them think that they’d have been better off sticking with most of the players that got them promotion with a couple of shrewd, new signings. Many of the new signings they haven’t been impressed with.

Very much like the team that Burley took up through the playoffs... no stars, but a good team that had played together in the main for a few years knocking the door... finishing 5th when they got up there wasn't too bad going, was it?

Two of the worst sides to be in the league, and testament to the fact that some Championship top teams just play one way and grind out the Championship but have no real ambition or style.
Luton on the other hand have stuck to doing it the right way, and taking the game to any team, commendable.
Then you look at Leeds Leicester and Southampton, 3 of the best squads to ever be relegated, seriously. Brentford, Bournemouth, Forest really undid them last season, Fulham too.
A curious era we are in.

If we keep the main 16 or so and add a bit of Premier League experience in Midfield and Defence, then I reckon we will be alright. Wouldn't want to rip the squad up and wouldn't expect McKenna to either. Spend £10-15M and bank the rest.

Finishing top in the Championship is no guarantee of success but if you look over the last ten years at the teams who’ve stayed up (particularly for a couple of seasons) after being promoted you’ll find that most of them were promoted as champions. Norwich have obviously attempted to disprove that rule multiple times but, on balance, finishing top does matter.
