Pickford has first class distribution and saves penalties (We should have won Euro 2020 if not for bad penalties). Walker, Ferdinand, Campbell, Cole -( is right) Beckham, Bellingham, Gerrard, (big game players) Sterling (highly dangerous attack) Kane, Owen
Rooney had a great Euro debut but was never a big game player, hes benched. Its 5 from the modern era and 6 from the past. Most of the Golden era were not England minded so happy to drop the big time charlies for the modern proud team players.

As talented as the ‘golden generation’ they were a bunch of underachievers more interested in egotistical club rivalry than putting such rivalries to one side. A bunch of spice boys who should have done much much better.

All opinions I know, but Pickford better than David Seaman? I think not. David James and Paul Robinson certainly more comparable. I was having this same conversation over the weekend - Walker and Kane would get in for me, but I think the rest would struggle. There’s no doubt Bellingham is a very good player, but better than any of Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham or Scholes in midfield? I’m not sure.
This current England side are a collective unit, the ‘golden generation’ were good players but played as individuals. 2002 and 2004 those England squads were so strong, they should’ve won a major tournament during that period, but always came up short.
He’s probably right - seaman was prone to costly gaffes and presumably he’s thinking of a fit Michael Own up front, not Emile Heskey
The ‘golden generation’ were not a good team (or they were a badly managed team) … but other countries have good players too - hence England don’t win every game.

Couldn't find a way to dig out the Town in this post? You feeling ok?
Pickford is a better keeper than many give him credit for. He had a patchy spell for Everton 2 or 3 years ago and but has been very good since. Bellingham would get into that team.

It's interesting the similarities between that team and now: Only a good but not great keeper available Only a single left back of a good enough level No natural left winger of the same level as the others Lots of quality midfielders
Also where would Beckham play if he was playing today as most teams now play 433/4231 with right footed left wingers and vice versa with really only the full backs supplying the crosses?
Also Scholes over Gerrard is a reasonable decision if you want to play a possession game. Gerrard through large parts of his career went for the spectacular killer pass every time, I'm sure I read he had the PL record for lowest pass success for 90 mins for a game at West Ham (in Hodgson/Dalglish's time)

Scholes won 11 PL titles. We should've built the team around him, and I say this as a bit of a Gerrard fanboy.

So excited to see how Palmer develops, he looks very classy. I wonder if Ipswich should sign him.
Ha, once we've finished top four and qualified for the Champs league we can bring him in. Shame he wont' get a look in at these Euros with Safegate in charge.

Pickers flatters to deceive. He also thinks he’s pretty cool. He’s obviously a good keeper but nothing more.

Rice and Scholes over Gerrard is possibly one of the worst footy opinions I've ever seen.
Rice I could argue about, Gerrard would win that for me.
However as for Scholes. World class. Absolute world class. When you hear about some of the greatest players around that time talk about him (Zidane, Henry for example), he is the player they say was above others.
Probably because of his mannerisms and his nature, he doesn't get the plaudits he deserves.

Does Seaman qualify as being part of the golden generation? His last England game was 2002 I think.
No I don't think so - he was past his best in 2002 too, "Golden Generation" keepers would be Paul Robinson or David James, Scott Carson and Rob Green also briefly played then but I doubt anyone would select them!
