I’d prefer O’Shea to Ahmedhodzic, purely based on the relative reactions from Burnley and Sheffield United fans. Guess it could come down to McKenna’s preference.

Poll: Who would you play at right centre back on Saturday?

Will be interested to see who we end up with.

Having seen both 5-6 times on TV, O'Shea to me looks like a better defender but has never looked quick. Whilst Ahmedhodzic looks really quick and thought that might be part of our consideration given the way we play and the opportunities we may leave in behind.

Arguably we'll have a load more teams we have to sit back against like Liverpool where O'Shea might be better. Either way they both look good and an upgrade on Woolfy, as much as I love the guy.

It’s interesting how many people love Woolfenden but can’t wait to do him down compared to new signings. Didn’t see that for Luongo, when Cajuste and Phillips came in, or Chaplin after Szmodics’ arrival, or Burgess when Greaves came through the door. Or Hirst/Burns with Delap. Perhaps a degree of it towards Broadhead when compared to Clarke but that was soon shut down by others. Yet with Woolfenden it seems to be a different case. And, yeah, as I said last night, I will acknowledge maybe I am being over-sensitive but, at the same time, he’s had a rougher time on here than most in general.

Have we ever been in for O'Shea?

Last I read on here Phil dismissed the link, but suggested there was something in the Ahmedzovic one.

Realistically, every player we've signed for significant money this season is a significant upgrade on the player that played their last season. Fact.

Asked about O'Shea when he was last linked and was given short shrift. I suspect the latest link is just because we were mentioned prior to the Wolves deal. I know we've been working on Ahmedzovic, although these things can change, of course.

In some cases would not say significant, but agree all he big money spends are upgrades.

I think part of it is that midfielders and attackers are more interchangeable, so players like Chappers still hold a lot of value when coming on as one of KM's "finishers". With defenders you need a consistent unit who play 90 mins every week so their flaws are more apparent

Maybe - but can’t recall similar comments being made towards Clarke/Tuanzebe when Johnson signed, or Burgess being compared to Greaves.

SSN's news editor is running with O'Shea to Town now too... I wonder if Ahmedhodzic was a plan B and we were waiting to see if O'Shea would go to Brentford/Wolves first.

It wasn't that many days / weeks ago he reportedly gave us the cold shoulder. Now he's seen the calibre of players joining us, he wants in?

In otherwords he''s slept on it and realised how massive we are, if he signs he'll say how impressed he was with our training facilities etc

Maybe we are using one of the two players to put pressure on the other club to accept an offer.

He just can't do the basics of defending well enough imo. Let's see, he may learn from playing the highest level of the game week in week out. He did OK last week, but in the first 5 minutes he gets booked for being the wrong side and being turned easily.

I've seen a heap of people relegating Chappers to the bench on here tbh (or beyond it, some believe no longer with us after January), so would agree there's an element of you being more sensitive to Woolf criticism / scepticism. I would need a bigger abacus if counting all the times posters have commented that Chaplin's offered very little to the side over X months.

Luongo doesn't have the same critics I believe because most see his ability in a similar light. With Woolf, a few people thought he'd be subjected to 8-figure bids if we didn't go up last season, even speculating the likes of Arsenal would be lurking, while a few others thought he wasn't good enough for the Championship, or good enough to regularly start for us. It's a weirdly wide range of views and is maybe the consequence of him having spent all his career with us, or maybe he'd be a marmite defender anyway.

I think most people I've seen are questioning Chaplin's form since the turn of the year, rather than whether he's good enough or not at his best.

Even as a cheerleader for him, I would have been very surprised if we'd received a high offer for Woolfenden from a Premier League team, because he is, as you say, a marmite figure.

Yeah, I agree.

Anyway, Woolfie will be clocking up his 1000th Town first team appearance in 15 years time, so no need to worry.

I think Chaplin has an almost telepathic understanding with Hirst......and Hirst has been out injured.... hence why Chappers form is apparently off kilter.

Depending which article you read O’Shea was in the top 5 (or worst case top 10) fastest players in the premier league last season. Don’t think pace is an issue!!
