Dara O'Shea back on? on 13:20 - Aug 23 by Simonds92 | He just can't do the basics of defending well enough imo. Let's see, he may learn from playing the highest level of the game week in week out. He did OK last week, but in the first 5 minutes he gets booked for being the wrong side and being turned easily. |
And then plays very, very well for the other 85 minutes whilst having to walk that yellow card tightrope

Yes, I think you can include Burns in that as well. The three of them have a real understanding.

Whenever Hirst has been out the team we've not looked as potent. Luckily we had big Kieffer come in and make a great impact last season.

Dara O'Shea back on? on 11:59 - Aug 23 by pointofblue | It’s interesting how many people love Woolfenden but can’t wait to do him down compared to new signings. Didn’t see that for Luongo, when Cajuste and Phillips came in, or Chaplin after Szmodics’ arrival, or Burgess when Greaves came through the door. Or Hirst/Burns with Delap. Perhaps a degree of it towards Broadhead when compared to Clarke but that was soon shut down by others. Yet with Woolfenden it seems to be a different case. And, yeah, as I said last night, I will acknowledge maybe I am being over-sensitive but, at the same time, he’s had a rougher time on here than most in general. |
I'm not sure people do Woolfy down - just that the truth is there are better (or maybe more tested at Prem level) defenders out there. I have a soft spot for him since his debut in first game of the season a few years ago - v Blackburn I think). He looked utter class and I thought we'd got the second Alan Hanson. I still rate him, but the fact that he's been with us since, with poor managers, has meant that apart from the last 2 years his progress has been stunted somewhat. If he's good enough and better than whoever we sign then he'll regain his place - which is good enough for me.

I think with Woolfie, people need to take the blue tinted specs off sometimes... He's massively overrated, purely because he's an Ipswich boy.. a home grown player... But, if for example he came from Wigan, he'd just be an adequate defender at Championship level.. In pre season it was noticeable that Fridge played more games, over Woolfie and that we moved the ball quicker, something Woolfie doesn't do.. Best thing he ever did was to call out Don Goodman at the bus parade! He's a legend for that, but I'm afraid no more than a squad option for town in the premiership

And yet, with Edmundson available for the entire season, McKenna preferred Woolfenden for the majority of games. [Post edited 23 Aug 2024 14:35]

Dara O'Shea back on? on 13:47 - Aug 23 by pointofblue | I think most people I've seen are questioning Chaplin's form since the turn of the year, rather than whether he's good enough or not at his best. Even as a cheerleader for him, I would have been very surprised if we'd received a high offer for Woolfenden from a Premier League team, because he is, as you say, a marmite figure. |
The majority of critics thought it was a form issue last season I agree, though there were voices on here saying he'd rather been 'found out' after a strong start - that opposition players had worked out how to nullify him at Championship level. This summer I think I've read more critical posts of the opinion that the PL is a step too far, rather than just conversations around form or absent partners, but maybe this is a player about whom I'm too sensitive aha. Back to topic I don't remember watching Dara or Anel play before - I'm sure I must have given games I've seen involving the two clubs over the past season or so - but gut feeling based on transfer rumour timeline is Dara was higher on our shortlist. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I'm could have sworn O'Shea played against us at some point though can't work out when it would have been if so. Pretty sure we've never faced Ahmedhodzic.

He did well for the rest of the game, admittedly.. thing is, the one thing we need to do is tighten up at the back.. we've always scored goals, but let too many in at the other end.. CB has been the one area I've felt the need to upgrade in

Exactly. I do think Edmundson may come in tomorrow, though. Last season he seemed to be called upon when facing physical strikers, and Haaland is very much that.

Not unless a friendly. We played Exeter in a cup game when he was there but not in squad. Likewise Anel in the Championship for MK Dons and also Forest. He may still have been in school then as going back about 8 years! *From Transfermarkt not my own knowledge. 😅

I was going to comment that I don't understand signing another right sided DC when we already have 3. But seeing how fast Greaves is and see O'Shea as one of the leagues fastest players it makes more sense. With both of them plus Davis and Johnson both being pretty quick McKenna's plan would be to have the team pressing very high and backing the defenders to win races for balls over the top

Interesting because EA Sports have given him 61 pace, which is pretty darn slow. Anel is 78. Has the game mugged him off royally here or was Dara's top speed recorded much like my fastest through the speed sign around Westerfield on my bicycle, when it was a little unclear in the end if the sign was detecting me or the motorbike that was racing me.

I think he has tewo weaknesses in the Premier League. 1. Lack of pace 2. There will be two moments in each game that he will switch off. In League One and the Championship he will get away with it. He won't in the Premier League.

It's also about future development. Has he reached his peak? He's 25 so a good age for a cb. Plenty of games under his belt and 2 promotions. Good ball player. Can he get any better? He's not the quickest which doesn't help and he's not the strongest. If KM continues to search for a rcb then I think it's clear that he feels Wolfy has reached his peak.

Either way I think McKenna wants more depth. And, as much as I like him, I do think the plan will be Woolfenden as back up to whoever comes in. It's why I want it to be O'Shea. His character and performance seems to fit in with what we need more than Ahmedhodzic.

I just want a fast rcb. Obviously other attributes too but speed would really help when we try our highline. If we can recover like other prem sides can at times then its a massive plus.
