Met their Head of Fraud prevention last week. They leak £1.3bn per year.

The most incredible stat he shared was that their headcount has increased by 18% since before the pandemic but they are no more productive now despite the additional resource being tipped in.

Neither is OK.

It is a shame that the electorate can't be persuaded that the best way is to tax and invest.

At least, so far, our taxes haven't been thrown away on keeping their donors happy.

One of their three aims is prevention, but a caller on LBC correctly said that withdrawing the winter fuel payment was anything but preventative.

Which highlights the current problem the gov is at least claiming it wants to address.

Throwing more cash and more personnel at it doesn't improve performance when it's badly run. Reform is needed.

Utter rubbish. Most of the people in the NHs are hard working, smart people who are doing their level best in a broken system. What do you expect them to do when the equipment is broken and there is no money to replace it? When the roof leaks and the clinic rooms, waiting rooms and corridors are lined with buckets when it rains? When there is no space for patients to wait, to run clinics, for technicians to work on equipment, to store things, or to accommodate staff? When you try to recruit staff, there are no qualified applicants because the pay and working conditions are so bad?
This is nothing about a badly run service that needs reform. It is everything about decades of broken promises, under investment and government imposed targets that actually target the wrong things - short termism rather than understanding that continued investment is required, and some trust in the people who dedicate their lives to it.

I believe one of the planned reforms is a overhaul of the IT systems. The last time that was attempted - a program launched by Tony Blair's govt in 2002. It was eventually scrapped. But not before £10bn of tax payer's money had been ploughed into it.

It was written off as a lost cause by the coalition govt in 2011.

Starmer correctly realises that simply throwing more money at the NHS isn't the answer. Despite the derision about the Tories & the NHS, the amount of money spent on it has gone UP in real terms, as have the numbers of staff, but this hasn't been reflected in the numbers of new patients admitted & treated. Starmer has been vague about the details of his reforms, but they are long overdue & at least there is a chance that Labour will be trusted to undertake these reforms as we know the Tories won't be trusted. No other European country tries to operate a similar system, although most of these countries spend more government revenue per head on healthcare than the UK so if we want better public healthcare, we need to raise taxes & Starmer doesn't want to do that.

Maybe I have been lucky but my recent experience of using the NHS for an op I needed was excellent. From my initial appointment with a consultant to getting surgery was a matter of weeks (I was told I may have to wait many months initially). Aftercare has been great too. Can't fault it. Almost as good a level of service as going private.

You say utter rubbish, but most of what you said doesn't contradict my statement. I said nothing about how hard working the people are, or that they aren't doing their best (although inevitably there will be some that are, some that aren't). We both seem to agree the system is broken.

That needs to be addressed before more money is hosed at it.

Some things they do well and some they do not, and geography can play a part too.

I've had some excellent treatment recently with a few issues I had, whereas my wife has had a nightmare experience, which has left her close to panic attacks at the thought of visiting the hospital again.

would've been good if money was put into it when it was working better instead of being left to rot for 14 years.

it needs reform AND investment, starting with raising the morale of the staff by restoring their staffing levels and their pay. the chronic underfunding of public health for the last decade is coming home to roost and it's positive that prevention is being talked about again

Money *has* been put in, more and more every year, with little benefit. That's the point.
