I’m not sure why people (including McDonnell here) repeatedly bang their heads against this particular brick wall. They’re not going to move it. New New Labour have been nothing if not consistent in how they operate.
With articles like that John McDonnell has clearly given up trying to get the whip back.
Good on him!
Incidentally, I checked his expenses for the period he was shadow chancellor about a week ago, and noticed he received nothing in the form of gifts or hospitality.
It can be done.

Is the answer....as Conservatives?

I think the answer is probably for their MPs to accept it and work within the framework as it is. Like Jess Phillips seems to be doing. If she makes half the progress she’s hoping to on reducing attacks on women she’ll leave a valuable legacy. Which is more than can be said for any Tory over the last 14 years.

Nice idea but she won't. But Blair's lot were great on identity politics weren't they which had pretty much zero effect on any meaningful change concerning anything of any real consequence. F#ck we've set a low bar haven’t we!

I'm not sure that a bloke who, when George Osborne was removing training bursaries from student nurses, was posturing with Chairman Mao's Red Book for the sake of a cheap joke, is in any kind of position to make judgements on who's a 'grown up'.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

You're welcome to your grown ups. If Wes Streeting, Reeves and Starmer float your boat then good luck.

Or by citing John McDonnel.
If it were just McDonnell, it wouldn't be an issue. But it is not.
The comments below the line in the Guardian have overwhelmingly condemned what has gone on, and even centrists in the paper like John Crace and Marina Hyde have mirrored what McDonnell said.

labour government gets attacked from the left as well as from the right wing press. same old same old.
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Although some of it is well deserved, judging by all the recent revelations.
It never changes, despite some people clinging to the belief that the labour party is holier than thou.
It's an absolute world away from Tory corruption. I know the likes of you and the Tory press want it to be seen as the same sort of thing but this is trifling in comparison and barely even a story.
The Tories funnelled billions to their mates. Many of them should be in prison.
Trust the process. Trust Phil.

A bung is a bung, doesn’t matter how big or how small, it’s still a bung.

Although it's nowhere near the wholesale fraud and corruption we saw under the previous Tory government, I don't think the optics are great when the public sees Starmer, who has a net worth of £10million, having his and his wife's clothes paid for, a box at the Emirates etc whilst at the same time cutting the heating allowance which will force some pensioners into the choice of heat or eat.
These things form a narrative that isn't easily forgotten.
Getting back to the previous government, there were some really serious abuses involving dodgy donations, fraud and corruption etc but it's the wallpaper and the duck houses that people remember.

They are all the same, trouble Is free gear kier made such a song and dance about Boris and the wall paper. They are all full of crap.
But to cut the heating allowance is plain cruel in my eyes.We should look after those first who have paid into the system all their working lives.
My concern is didn’t any of them appreciate the optics of this, coming off the back of successive governments - particularly Johnson’s - which were mired in sleaze, scandal and mutual back scratching? No one, particularly Starmer himself, didn’t stop for one moment and think it’d be better to say no? They are supposed to be making major decisions to get the country back on it’s feet but they can’t even reach the right solution to the simplest of conundrums.
