Stuart Attwell.

Always been poor, but an FA golden child who got fast-tracked.

Typical Prem ref. Can’t make a decision and hopes VAR backs him up.

At least him not giving Morsy a second yellow card means that I can let go my grievances against the officials for not giving Davis a penalty at the Etihad.

He was fine. The problem is most fans don’t know the laws of the game.

The only one I thought he got wrong was the free kick towards the end that Beiudiea (sp) skied over.

After being fast tracked,he was demoted from the PL, for poor performances.

And that shows how hard refereeing is. Especially when you are 80 yards away not 10 ….

Yup he was decent except he could or maybe could have sent Sam off . Obviously glad he didn't xx

Agreed, he was terrible, conned time and again (including by our players I might add).

What was really bizarre was when he marched over to make sure that ball was a millimeter over in the quadrant for a corner. Just weird. But what makes it more weird is 10 or so minutes later, their keeper takes a free kick from nowhere near the offence, the complete wrong side even, and the ref says nothing.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

He was so poor he got absolute pelters in the ground, and some boos as he sloped off at half time. Delap should have had multiple free kicks in the first half, the most blatant incident a Villa player dragged Hutch off the ball by his arm and the ref did nothing.

From what I’ve seen they are no better than Championship refs. There’s always a whiff of big club bias too.

Problem with the Prem is there is big club bias and also the opposition are far more streetwise in buying fouls.
Liverpool did it, Brighton did it, the only player in our squad who does it is Phillips.
What annoyed me about Villa was all the whingeing and whining when they got touched.
Morsy was probably saved by the fact Villa kept throwing themselves to the ground, although he also get a touch on the ball before contact.
But we’ll have to wise up and adapt to it. I don’t like it but it’s clearly a well used tactic in the top flight.
That said Attwell was bang average. He only booked the Villa lad for kicking the ball away because the crowd reacted. And that is something we, as fans, need to do.
Portman Road is a tight ground, you could see how the atmosphere affected Villa in those last 10 minutes.
It really is like having an extra man.

I thought he was very good. Only gripe was that Rogers should've been booked for persistent fouling.

Just watched the Sky highlights Ref spot on with that free kick just outside the box as Taylor went through their player to get the ball just glad the ex scummer put the kick into the crowd .

I thought he was poor. Through my rose coloured ITFC specs, I did think he favoured Villa throughout the game, although watching the highlights when I got home, Morsy could easily have been sent off with a 2nd yellow, albeit that his original yellow was rather harsh

I think on TV he was reasonably fair but as with most PL refs they are bit more pernickety and let a bit less go

So far from what I can see, they're generally more decisive and you get a feel for the game as the match progresses but they generally make their decisions, stay firm on them and by doing so, attempt to keep control of the game by staying firm

It doesn't always work and yesterday's game wasn't dirty really by any means, both sides gave a lot of cheap fouls away in the middle of the park, Rogers who TNT highlighted themselves as walking a tight rope had given away three Morsy style fouls in the middle himself and even the commentator was a bit surprised when their statto had told them that

We'd literally just taken Phillips off when Morsy then committed that foul, in real time I didn't think there was a lot in it and presumably the ref having taken his time, did give him the benefit of the doubt

There was a fair argument for McKenna getting Morsy off sooner I'd suggest

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

He was bad all round and both sides benefited, and it was quite refreshing to not hear Emery moan about the Morsy second yellow for the stamp, because he realised they also got a number of decisions they probably shouldn't have.

Refs have been largely poor all season.

Premier League is such a soft league, almost a non-contact sport.

Not sure it is even the referees, or more the directive from the powers above.

He was ok, made mistakes but he’s only human. Probably should’ve sent Morsy off but most refs don’t particularly want to bring out their red card.

Just been looking at the Villa forum.

They are wondering how much we paid the ref to be so biased against them.
Personally I just think he was cr@p.

They are also wondering why we booed the team off at half time ? Nobody there thinks it might have been the ref.

If a player doesn’t go to ground then the refs don’t blow. This is why there’s so many limp falling overs after small fouls, to force the referee to make a decision which he inevitably gives. If Omari throws himself to the ground after that pull back he wins a free kick, but staying on his feet he gets nothing, which exacerbates the problem..

Most fans think refs are poor because (1) most fans don't know the laws & how refs apply them at the top level & more importantly (2) most fans are biased & want every debatable decision to go in favour of their team. In football, umpteen decisions are debatable - small fouls, yellow cards etc. I'm not a huge fan of Attwell but I thought he did fine yesterday. If both sets of fans are moaning, he probably did OK. He could easily have sent Morsy off for a 2nd yellow, but applied the unwritten "higher bar" law.

Yep, he did. Thought he was very inconsistent, some good bits and others bad. Long delay before blowing whistle etc.
