I recently came across the following quote by Gramsci and thought everyone on here ought to bear it in mind.
"When debating with an opponent, try to put yourself in his shoes."
And for those posters who come under attack for having a view that no others on the thread share, let's not forget the words of John Stuart Mill.
“If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.”

Ahh the great philosopher John Stuart Mill. One of the Victorian greats whose ideas are just as relevant today as 180 odd years ago. Lots of good stuff from him including:
‘That the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilised community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others’
Your point is well made. The tolerance, consideration and acceptance of alternative points of view is something that could be improved upon on this forum by some. It might save the administrators having to delete so many threads.

If Gramsci ever has reason to visit the strange world of TWTD he’d surely have said
“Try to put yourself in his straight jacket”
I’m reminded of watching a debate between local MP Anthony Wedgwood-Benn and an up and coming conservative MP called Michael Heseltine at the student Union many years ago. After getting a bit of a barracking the soon to become Tony Benn said….
“If you could see my point of view you’d agree with me”.
Not a lot has changed in the minds of the deranged who are always right about everything.

Interesting that you use the word "deranged" about other people.

Depends if the opponent is speaking from authority/evidence or just made up nonsense.
'...philosophical hero, David Hume, was even more sceptical. He attacked the rationalism of Descartes, completely rejecting the idea that reason alone can tell us anything about how the world works. Even our knowledge of cause and effect, upon which our entire understanding of the physical world depends, is not established by reason or even observation. Hume was as sceptical about the power of reason as anyone. And yet he believed that we ought to think as clearly as possible, and proportion our beliefs to the evidence.'
I’m all for this until someone thinks pineapple on pizza is nice, for which ridicule and usually a lifetime rift is definitely the appropriate response 🍍

The problem is they tend to believe what they are saying and don’t see it as made up nonsense.
In my youth there was one particular family friend, an elderly gentleman, who always had a counter opinion on any subject. He would exasperate my mother who would often end a discussion by saying to him “ you would argue with Jesus that black was white”

I never understand people who don't get ham and pineapple together. The combination works because it has at least 4 and sometimes all 5 of the universally accepted basic tastes perceived by our taste buds. You have sweet and sour in the pineapple, with an occasional bitter aftertaste, and salty and umami in the ham.
It's why cheese and pineapple on sticks works too!

No
Milled flaxseed is an interesting one, I eat it as an elevenses savoury snack alternative to nuts or crisps but the front of the latest packet I bought from Lidl has it swimming in milk with added berries.

I’ve always laughed and turned my nose up at the Hawaiian pizza with pineapple ham, but was offered a slice at some do the other month and do you know, it was alright. Eaten lot worse things that’s for sure.
Pizza is a rarity for me and if I do indulge it’s generally meat feast, chicken, American hot, pepperoni sort of stuff but if push comes to shove I’d mangle the old pineapple and ham and enjoy it. Does that make me a bad person?
A lot of Middle East/African stuff is made with fruit (tagine etc) and I’ve always enjoyed it immensely.
Broadening the food-mind is no bad thing.

Cheese and pineapple sticks are feck1n excellent. The size of the cheesy pineapple hedgehog is still how I judge the quality of a wedding.

civil debate always depends on both sides being able to conceive of the possibility that they might be wrong.
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Agreed!
Should the cheese or the pineapple be at the pointy end of the stick? Always the cheese in my view - less risk of cheese dropping off than pineapple, unless you are dopey enough to use something like Wensleydale (great cheese though it is).
Would pineapple work with a Dairylea triangle? I think not. It’d never hold together.

Exactly, you need a good cheese brake, you have to think safety first. It also as to be a cheddar surely? Preferably mature or vintage to really compliment the pineapple. Other cheeses, Wensleydsle, Dairylea etc obviously have there place it's just not squeezed up against a cube of pineapple on the end of a cocktail stick
