Past managerial appointments 16:36 - Oct 29 with 1944 viewsFrimleyBlue

Anyone got any previous managerial appointments that they were gutted didn't end with success.

Obviously that could be said for any manager we had but I mean specifically

For example Keane. Dreadful time here. But at the time to have Keane as manager and despite the horrid Roy Keanes ipswich. We did have one if the world's biggest names in the game as our manager. So despite disliking him It was an appointment that I wish lead to some form of success over someone like lambert.

I wanted all of them to be a success, though I wasn't happy with either Keane nor Lambert's appointments at the time as I thought they would both be rubbish.

I really believed Jewell would be successful, he got us playing some good stuff at times, though too few and far between. I'm happy to admit I got that one wrong and he was rubbish though.

Gutted Royle never got us over the line as those two play off seasons were great fun.

I was never a fan of Joe Royle being our manager, it was to do with his time at Oldham and also the Norwich connection. I was much more spikey about the Green and Yellow link back then than I am now.

Unpopular opinion but I never rated him during his time as manager here. He had lots of resources available and failed to get us back up. Sure we had a couple of playoff runs but in my eyes he blew it. He also turned Magilton into a sideways and backwards footballer.

Am sure I will get shouted down as there seems to be a lot of love for him, but he chronically underperformed for us as a manager.

We went in to administration just after he took the job and we then had to sell all of our best players, the club was a mess but he still kept us competitive. I'd also say Magilton was outstanding under Royle, but it's a game of opinions.

I was wasn't a fan of him being appointed after that smug interview when he was Man City manager, but I warmed to him.

Paul Hurst, not because of who he was, but because it was the first time ME listened to fans, and hired someone not on the merry go round, who was thought of as young, and maybe upcoming...

Paul Cook.

I'd fancied him as our manager for a few years, after the job he did at Portsmouth and Wigan, but from very early on it was clear it wasn't going to work. His public throwing of players under the bus didn't sit well with me at all, but when you add that to the frankly poor results his tenure was a disaster.

And before someone pipes up to say he laid the groundwork by getting rid of the deadwood - he could very easily have done that without needing to be a tool about it.

Deffo Roy Keane
I thought he was an excellent appointment for us at the time - thought he would give us some grit and win at all costs attitude, as I felt we were too 'nice' and nice doesnt win you many games.
Didnt work out though, unfortunately, but I still like to listen to him occasionally. He says it as it is, and played the same way.
Pity he couldnt manage !!!!

Yeah, but very famous and we didn't see pressers of that standard till Lambo took over.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

I loved Joe Royle. Even more so after he ruined Malcy's wedding.

Jackie Milburn.

Mind you he did sign Danny Hegan AND start the youth system so in some respects he was Town’s most successful manager

Yes, always want our newly-appointed managers to be a success, for obvious reasons. If they do well, so does Town.

But there have been some I went off fairly quickly after appointment.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
