is that we have struggled with big physical sides who stay compact and pump the ball up to a big man who runs the channels

That wasn't going to change in the PL sadly and Palace were one of those unfortunately

See West Ham, Everton and to some extent Forest who I actually thought we did reasonably well with, be it that we offered little in the second half against them

I don't know what the solution to sides like this besides drastically upgrading our size and athleticism throughout the squad

We didn't have the athleticism to challenge the Palace defence when we did get into positions to break, pretty much everything we did was nullified by their tactics and eventually we made a mistake which they punished

They did a similar job on Tottenham in their other win this season, their defence looks too good to go down on that showing, even if they will continual to struggle for goals, playing like that

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Glasner has changed their style recently. Last season they were attack focused, but had a lot of injuries this season and not playing well. Glasner has changed their style to be more defensive to stop the rot. A couple of Palace fans I know have said he's playing for 0-0 with the hope of hitting teams on the break, and the return of Eze from injury has helped with that approach.

I think what I found frustrating is that Mateta did fark all other than score. O'Shea handled him superbly generally.

Precisely, so why can't we mix up different styles especially when we play away? We can't go man for man with established Prem teams it is clear for all to see. I know it is not McK's style but pragmatism has to be the rule. We can't replicate our swashbuckling style yet in the Prem because of the superior quality of opposition so why not set up a low block and hit on the counter like what Palace did? Rather play ugly and get a point than to pass around aimlessly and leave with none.

Personally i think we will always struggle in this league if we include Hutchinson , Burns and J. Clarke together , i said it early in the season and i still feel the same . Nothing against any of these three but together !!!

Sometimes I think the obsession with retaining the ball and playing out at all costs is a fallacy. With the right decision-making we could at times last night have gone over the top. Hoof ball if you want to disparage it. But actually making their big units run back a bit might occasionally have helped. First half an O'Shea hoof won us a throw in near their goal line.
It's a case of mixing things up a bit; stop us being so obvious.

Wrong team selection, players played out of position and stronger players left sat onnthe bench didn't help. Szmodics must be wondering why he joined us. Burns ineffective and out of his depth in the PL. Missing Hirsts guile and hold up play. J Clarke not PL level . Town once again failing to turn up to beat a team from the relegation " mini league" were in. After last nights display I'm of the view we will be relegated. Before thdn, I thought we might have a chance. But McKenna must own that defeat. Too many wrong decisions.

It's a difficult thing really because you say to much and people say you think you know better etc.

But KM talks a lot, a hell of a lot about players improving, and almost like results are secondary, which i get. But in some fixtures, like last nights, it's almost like he's more interested in maintaining the process of development over doing something that might get us a result in that specific game.

For example, Al Hamadi.. not really a game for him to come on in tbh, not when you do have SZ on the bench.
J Clarke, what suddenly made him a starter out of nowhere? but also, developing him into the role KM wants him to play rather than letting him play the way that made him a transfer target in the first place.
Taylor coming on and just being used in the same way as cajuste, not really making the most of what Taylor could offer with perhaps having him advanced and around the box to maybe get a 30 yarder on target.

Last night to felt a bit weird. Burns was ineffective, so really he should have have come off at HT, or even earlier once it was obvious we weren't bothering to get him into space, or that he couldn't make the space himself..

Then the Greaves inclusion in a 6 pointer when Burgess has just spent weeks working well with oshea, muric and davis.

I dunno, Just feel like the season is more about future planning rather than trying to get results.

I've always found it baffling that McKenna hasn't tried Taylor as a ten. Last night didn't really feel like the type of game for Chaplin.

Palace although a dull watch were very impressive with their shape and the speed they got around the ball. I know a lot less than KMc but I always think in that scenario you need to try and stretch the defence with a few balls over the top so they sit a bit deeper and therefore leave a bit more space in midfield.

Pragmatism is the word. We have to remember that McK has only been managing an adult team for less than three years and apart from a short spell coaching adults at Man U most of his career he's been an Academy training ground coach where the aim is to develop players. Not his fault and he's done remarkably well against the teams we've met at second and third tier level. Sticking to his principles has paid off big time.....hitherto. Now we're up against a far more capable standard of opposition and coaching we need to be more pragmatic and less principled.

I get that we have this way of playing and we're used to it. But other than changing personnel, we don't have much of a plan B.

In the championship, we used the subs great and i think maybe our fitness being better than other teams, we got a lot of joy late on in games. The premier league is totally different.

I think McK used our squad strength advantage and the five subs rule very effectively against third tier opponents and most of the second tier opponents. Our defenders knew they would be playing the full game unless of injury whereas 3 or 4 of the rest would be told to burn themselves out in 65-70 minutes as fresh legs would replace them against tiring opponents who lacked the same strength in depth. It was so predictable and worked so well. Won't work for us at this level though.

Tbh it didn't work very well against the better Championship clubs last season as well. Southampton aside we took only FOUR points out of a possible 24 (D4 L4) from the other top 6 clubs Leeds, Leicester, West Brom and the Scum.

From the above it was clear we needed a massive upgrade a la Forest, and now it is showing.

Every team does have a style that will always be the counter to how you play, that's just the nature of it. Like how City basically always lose to Spurs.

It's interesting,

Promotion was of course brilliant, but despite the number of wins we had, each week you still saw outsiders wondering how are ipswich top 3.

We won a large number of games, hence our promotion, and we played some lovely football across the season too, but there were also many many games that were competitive yet we edged them.

We are basically continuing that theme of being competitive, but our get out clause of a late couple of goals isn't going to get us out of trouble this season until we can bring on subs who actually scare the tiring opposition.

Agreed, as I said, it worked against most of the second tier opponents. It was enough to get us up.
