We're giving ourselves a chance 20:15 - Dec 14 with 1769 viewsDubtractor

I was pretty despondent after the Bournemouth game last week, and sort of conceding that we were going down, but it's amazing what a difference a win makes! I actually think we played some better football against Bournemouth than today, but it's all about the 3 points and we did enough to earn them today.

Taking a step back from the up and down emotion though, the last 8 games have either been decided by the odd goal, or drawn. We're keeping ourselves in games, looking much less likely to ship goals, and finding ways to score in most games. Even if we are, ultimately, not as good as most of the teams we are playing, we are making sure we do at least have a chance of getting wins. We need to add a little more quality (or fit players!) in a few positions in January, but we've got as good a chance as anyone of avoiding the drop, and I think Southampton and Wolves both look cooked so only one place left to avoid!

I think last week and this week shows how important wins are over draws. We're now better off conceding in the final minute last week and scoring in the 93rd this week, than had we drawn both games 1-1.

Yep, but we ain’t half making hard work of it. We really, really could have done with more points from the last 4 games. But like you say - were hanging in there.

Do you think we can afford the sorts of players that will improve the team enough to get us that extra bit we need?

Agree with a lot of that.

For obvious reasons we have had to do a fair sized rebuild and it happened late. The first few games (which included Liverpool and Man C) was a close to we got to a pre season.

I admit, I was very low as well after Bournemouth.

I'm with ya buddy, after Bournemouth I was starting to accept our fate...for the second time this season! I felt that way after we'd failed to gather any wins from West Ham, Everton, Brentford and Leicester. At that point I was starting to feel like I didn't want to be Premier League, due to the amount of dodgy decisions that were going against us. Then Spuds and Manure happened and all was good with the world again. The last set of results against teams we hope to get a decent haul of points from had put me back in that hole again. I was starting to think our luck had run out but the best fix for that is a final second winner.

We are Premier League, say we are Premier League!

Agree about us staying in games and scoring. We've proven that we're not the sort of team to collapse.

My gut feeling is that in January Ashton will have a pretty good case.to.make to ask Ed Schwartz and co for decent backing again, whether that be a big loan move or in the market. A striker, possibly one or two others and we will be in even better shape.

McKenna is the real deal. He's doing all of this on the backfoot in terms of time and with so many players to integrate.

I think our potential ceiling is higher than any of the other sides down in the scrap.

That Bournemouth game totally done me last week. Even a draw today wouldn't have perked me up that much.

A win today was absolutely huge. Looking at some of the games that have gone by, I don't think it is too much of a stretch to say we should really be above West Ham at least.

I know it was somewhat tongue in cheek what you said on the one spot left but I certainly wouldn't rule out Wolves getting themselves out of it. Some very talented players and if they got the next management appointment right then they could turn it around.

The problem is you get the win, the positivity comes back and then you look at the fixtures....Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool all coming up in Dec/January. Reality is the others in the month are no easier. Fulham away and Brighton at home. What a tough league.

Just enjoy these moments and we all need to stick with the manager and team. Amazing really that we have 12 points in the premier at this stage where you see where we were 2 seasons ago!!

whether we can or can't, we are surely recruiting a few players in January

Hopefully they will add some much needed quality and depth

They're all hard. If we don't play at our best at this level, we get punished, as we have discovered.

However, if we play at our best we stand a chance of beating almost anyone in this league, as we have also shown.

Really interesting, thought provoking post.

Yes, today does make a big difference. How much? I don’t know. After last week, I thought we were done. We just weren’t strong enough. It’s nobody’s fault - the gap is just too great, but I’m pleased and proud we’ve given it a go. Better than not even trying as some clubs have.

Do I feel any different about the situation? In truth, not really. Failing to get points out of our last couple of home games feels a real kick in the nuts. It felt like that was that and when I look at upcoming fixtures and the table? Let’s just say it’s a challenge.

But as I’ve said in a number of posts that you never ever give up, you never stop. I’m proud of this team for doing just that. It’s all I ask. Because when you do that good things can happen. You never know.

Do we need to add in January? Yes. Just a couple of players, if we can find them. We also need a break re injuries. The players are adjusting and learning. Keep the faith. I never thought we’d be anywhere near playing Newcastle next week two years ago yet here we are.

We just HAVE to stay behind the team and the manager. Divided clubs don’t do well and the teams in and around us don’t have the togetherness that we still have at this club.

Stay fully behind the players and the staff. We will keep giving ourselves a chance. COYB.
