Grrr... Tips for getting an 11 year old old out of bed 07:12 - Dec 13 with 3659 viewsgiant_stow

.. To go to school?

Taking the duvet off him? Taking away Xbox? Making him go to bed earlier?

This is driving me crazy!

Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

In this house, when it gets bad, every minute later than 8AM that you leave the house you lose a day of Xbox. As that is all screen time controlled it is easy to enforce. Focuses the mind. I also have a standing rule that if anyone writes to me about behaviour (including being late) a week is removed.

It’s not all stick, but with these things I just can’t be bothered to do anything else.

I think you should consider his surrounds - if it's too comfortable in bed why would he get up?

Reckon one of these might do the trick.

I like the phrase 'standing rule' in these circumstances and know exactly what you mean about not being bothered with it. He's just left and will be late - hopefully he gets a detention.

The Norwich stuff might actually work too!

Continuing on the Norwich theme, perhaps set up an alarm clock in the far corner of his room that blares out On The Ball City until you get up and physically turn it off?

I know it's difficult but I would look into a possible reason why he doesn't want to go to school.

It's not easy because if you ask "Is anything wrong", they will just say "No".

At the risk of sounding like a big wet fart, you could try something like "What was the best thing that happened today"?, followed by "And what was the worse thing"?

He could of course just be a lazy sod.

If you're being a wet fart, then so am I - exactly what I was thinking. Also, I got exactly the response you suggested was possible. He'll only talk about these things when he's reached his lowest ebb. Norwich duvet cover ordered - that'll learn him.

Its near xmas, its dark, why would anyone want to get up.

You could look into it deeply and see if there is a school issue.

Or it could be how we all feel sometimes. School is seen as a must do and no one wants to be told what they must do.

Possibly finding life difficult at the moment, and no child/teenager wants to tell their parents what is wrong. They may feel better speaking to a teacher/coach/similar. 77What and how many friends do they have, what are they like. Are his friends moaners and depressive, or upbeat?

How are they about things other than school. Do they enjoy out of school activities or are you finding that everything is rubbish?

If you are a dad we like to find solutions. Not everything has an answer. Mums listen and extract info which they may not tell you.

It of course could be a number of things. Even some or all of the things you mention. Trying getting children to bed at a sensible time to get enough sleep to wake up at a sensible time to get ready for school is an impossible task.

Do they find it difficult to get to sleep because of adrenaline from sport/ games console use. You know what it is like when you cant sleep or wake up during the night when something is playing on your mind. Same for kids.

Not really advice but food for thought.

Mental health is vitally important at all ages.

Put a big speaker in his room and blare out Delia going "COOOOOME ON, WHERE ARE YOOOOOOOO, LESSSS BE 'AVIN YOOOOOOOOO" over it when its time to get up.

You have to be careful with that, to make sure it stays in view. A Norwich one might struggle to stay where you put it, as they don’t like to stay anywhere near the top of the table…

Sport and exercise is a much underrated pick me up, is he sporty?

Failing that, what is he good at, what does he like? If, for example, he likes acting then take him to an out of school drama club etc etc.

If he isn't connecting with school then try and find things outside of school, he might meet and make new friends.

We would all like to be young again but being young isn't always what it's cracked up to be.

As others have said it could be a whole load of reasons, it might be that he's tired from staying up too late gaming in which case that's on you to set the boundaries and not take the path of least resistance (which I know is easier said than done). It could be something at school he particularly doesn't like and want to face in to which you can support with if you can extract that information. It might be a bit seasonal, or just feeling a bit under the weather which I'm sure happens to most of us at times.

I can't really remember being routinely like that at 11 but I dare say I wasn't desperate to get out of bed and go to school at that age either tbh. That's not to say I was depressed or hated school when I wasn't and didn't. Probably just a bit of a lazy toad.

Now look at me, I post on TWTD during my work hours :)

Who would do that and for what reason?

Boredom, WFH, that 10 minute break from the screen every hour we are supposed to take.

Open the bedroom door, open the kitchen door, cook some bacon.

Some good advice in this thread should he be down in the dumps, but just in the interest of balance I absolutely hated waking up early (in fact I still do) for school and it wasn't because I disliked going in or was depressed. Kids/teenagers need a lot of sleep and I don't think he will be out of the ordinary (especially in the winter).

FWIW my trick was to have my alarm on the other side of the room with a really annoying tune that I had to get out of bed to turn off.

Is he overdoing the sport ? I know my kids towards the end of term are exhausted and getting out of bed is a challenge, not help by some form of sport every evening on top of school. We have to be careful of not burning them out this time of year.

The flip side is cash rewards for every minute before 8am 😂
