Elon Musk's wealth 15:31 - Jan 1 with 2913 viewsnoggin

increased by $200 billion in the last year.

I'm genuinely lost for words. It's success and should be admired, apparently 😟

It is related to the share price of Tesla. It's not $200bn sat in an account somewhere.

If we have another year in markets like 2022 next year then his wealth will likely go down by $200bn.

It is a colossal amount of wealth I agree but he can't in reality realise much if any of it (not a good look if the CEO suddenly starts dumping stock of his own company).

However, none of the above makes him any less of tw@t.

It's disgusting and irresponsible in a world of poverty and social fragmentation, and almost certainly facing imminent climate system breakdown.

Success = Biggest pile of abstract money possible, apparently.

Funny thing is, in all the pics and vids I've seen of him, he never looks genuinely free and happy.

How peculiar! Perhaps we've got it wrong?

That's small change.

He's got 4 years to manipulate a President and the US government into making him the worlds first trillionaire.

This. It's entirely notional worth. The very act of selling shares en masse would reduce the value drastically.

Tho he does (attempt to) pay himself quite well, too. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/dec/02/elon-musk-tesla-pay-package

I believe he pays next to no tax in his personal capacity either.

Moreover, the bank lends him his living expenses each year against the value of his Tesla stake, so he pays the interest rate on the loan (~5% pa) instead of the tax.

Smart but immoral, albeit immoral and Musk seem to go hand in hand these days sadly.

Great stuff, we'll have some shares then for the national wealth fund rather than just saying oh well, we can't get to it. Try not paying your taxes and then saying but my net worth is all in assets!

Truly impaired.

I mean, he literally bought the US presidency last year and is actively trying to do the same here.

Wealth is wealth, be it cash or assets. Why have cash in the bank, when assets earn more?

It's more that assets are a floating, largely imaginary figure - as opposed to a strictly defined cash balance. The former can be freely used as collateral for borrowing as well, at whatever figure the two sides are prepared to agree on.

How the indebtedness of those assets is taken into account can be interesting, too.

That we don’t already have a sovereign wealth fund is on our successive, short-sighted and feeble politicians. Had we done so we wouldn’t need to add a million people a year to fund our pensions, not have a record national debt whereby we pay more in interest than we do funding our education system.

Not only that, the government could have large enough stakes to be activist investors, overseeing Executive remuneration, tackling greenwashing etc. instead our useless politicians gave away our natural resources for pitiful licences, failed to create a national investment vehicle, and kicked the pension can down the road. By some estimates the black hole for public sector pensions is as nearly as large as our economy (£2.6trn). That’ll be future generations paying that off.

Yep. This is how most truly "rich" people pay themselves. The tax rate can be whatever you want, when you get to properly rich you stop paying tax - unless you tax assets tied to the country of situation, like farms...

I assume the current valuation of SpaceX is accounted for in whatever figure the OP referenced.

Also, with rates at around 4.5%, not sure you'll get the big IPO pops that we saw in 2021 for example. Not impossible but less likely.

Once SpaceX floats I'm imagine that the price will rocket (see what I did there?) post IPO launch. So they are probably currently basing it on the last round of VC investment
