"Brighton is a benchmark" to see how far we've progressed since last w 09:39 - Jan 18 with 1987 viewsbobbyramsey

Said KM.

What do we reckon?

Now Man City are also a benchmark.....

I think if we can stay up this season, we could become a regular in this league and we will resemble the likes of Brighton, Fulham and Brentford. Brighton is the bench mark I guess in recent seasons, but the likes of West Ham, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth have been between the leagues in moderate recent times. It will take time and patience will be needed, but if we stay up this season, I don't see us in the bottom 5 next season and beyond.

Brighton are an excellent team and well settled now in the Premiership, but I had hoped for a draw.

Manchester City will either be brilliant or not so brilliant and I’d give my right gonad for a draw.

Kieran was asked if it was a benchmark and said, “Let’s see. It’s always better to show it than to talk about it. Our actions will show."

How did this performance compare to the last time we met Brighton, have we progressed etc, etc?
It's what a benchmark is.....

Last time we were outplayed. They should've scored a couple, and we then hung on for a draw at theirs.

We weren't outplayed this time, but their quality and bench options vs. ours (due to injuries) ultimately told. We're operating on a razor edge this season, any deviation from all the team playing at their best and we lose.

Well if diving, feining injury, and general shytehousery, and ABH on the opposition keeper is a Brighton benchmark to aspire to, I'm happy being Ipswich as we thanks.

You have to wonder what Brighton would have been like under McKenna because I pretty certain they wouldn't have adopted the tactics they did the other night!

If the Brighton way, is the PL way, then you can stick the PL where the sun doesn't shine, because it really ain't all that much.

They were saying they have only lost 5 games all season so they don't lose many, they have just drawn too many

You can kind of see that, based on the first 60 mins

If we roll about dive and cheat make out we are hurt like that think I won't bother to go. May have got the result but that's not for me they must practice conning referees in training.

Well we drew with Brighton away and kept a clean sheet. We then lost at home by two clear goals and not many of us were massively impressed by our performance.

So I'm not sure I'd be shouting about using the Brighton game as a benchmark.

Practising conning refs is exactly what PL players do. Cheating each other. Part of gamesmanship as they call it.

Veni Vidi Participatur. Now we can get back to competing.

We seem to be drawing or winning games that we expect to lose, and losing games we expect to draw or win, so its difficult to set a benchmark

Let's also not forget that Brighton spent nearly £200M in the last window, only behind Chelsea and United, on top of an already expensive squad built over several years.

This is what we're competing with this season.

If we stay up on goal difference (which is far from impossible) then next season become a completely different prospect. For me an interesting benchmark for us will be the Coventry game. We'd hope to be a few levels above them now. We'll see very soon.

Honestly I thought we were a good bit better on Thursday night, much as the result points the other way. That first game had a cup tie feel to it, with us digging deep to escape with a very unlikely point.

Second game we looked like we belonged in the same league, just without the quality to respond once they went in front. Agree with KM that we edged the chances before conceding what was another soft goal / blunder sadly.

That was Kieran's assessment post-match. Other than one Delap break at Brighton it was 90 minutes of defending on the edge of our own box, so definite progress from then to now even if the result didn't reflect that.

This was your comment on this issue just 2 days ago FFS!

"People might not like what Brighton did tonight - cheating/ gamesmanship/ managing the game etc etc .... but when are we going to stop being so naive and apply the same tactic.

You can say, you wouldn't ever want us to adopt a similar approach but if it meant we a achievedpoints ( or didn't throw them away!), you do it wouldn't you?

Or do we go down singing " but we can hd our heads up because we played an honest game", whilst those around us survive, because they didn't."

So much diving, feigning injury and time wasting.

Horrible team.

If the home and away results were reversed, we would have no complaints really

We were luckier earlier in the season and punished at home ultimately

We got battered last time we played them, but somehow managed a point, this time round and with a new shape, the first half played out as we would have liked, absorbing pressure and growing into the game, taking control and having better opportunities at goal, though nothing clear cut. That’s the first half in isolation, the second half was probably the worst we’ve played all season, can’t explain it, we went to pieces, which is very unusual for this squad.

In answer to the benchmark question, we learned nothing IMO, as the second half was immeasurably poor.
