Southport sentencing underway 12:48 - Jan 23 with 1662 viewsitfc_bucks

I'm reading the live reporting on the BBC and, my god, it's absolutely haunting.

The randomness of it all is just mindboggling. I take my kids to those sorts of holiday events. There's no rhyme or reason why it happened there rather than anywhere else.

Terrifying stuff.

Please don't turn this into a thread about death penalty or what not - I just really wanted to express my complete horror at how unspeakably awful the crime seems to have been.

Those poor families...

Awful for the families involved, those whose children survived and the emergency workers too.

Justice will be served and the murderer won't see the outside world again. Let's hope all the lessons will be learned and changes made to ensure similar cases are never repeated.

So sad in every respect.

I'm trying to explain to a colleague, who doesn't have kids, why is affected me so viscerally, but yes, it's impossible to be unaffected if you have children, I think.

Particularly if you have young daughters, as I do.

I've decided not to read it because there are some things I don't need or want in my head. Those poor families having to sit through it, I can't imagine the pain.

Which makes me wonder - where is the public interest in disclosing the full horror in this way? Is it really necessary?

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I’m not even ashamed to say it, when the news broke of this I stood there watching it and had tears in my eyes.
My daughters both dance, it made me feel so so sick for those families of the girls

I feel that I have to read it. Some poor kids didn't get the choice, they had to live it.

Frightens the crap out of me that the BBC have made abundantly clear that they're not putting across the worst bits.

How much more horrific can it possibly be?

I felt it important to read it despite not wanting to for the reason you give. And the relations and all involved who have the life sentence of having to live with it.

Yep, I struggle to read it. Turned off the news recently when it came on too, its too unbearable to even think about. As a father to a little boy and girl, my daughter is a similar age to those cruelly taken and its utterly heart breaking to think how scared they must've been. Children are so innocent, it sickens me to my absolute core that someone can be so unthinkably evil to young, innocent kids.

I thought they weren't able to give a full life term because he was under age at the time of it happening?

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I reckon it'll be an indefinite hospital order.

Last time I was really affected by such a story was the Peter Connelly ('Baby P') case. I had similar aged children at the time. That was horrific, carried out over several months and by the adults supposedly caring for the child, rather than a random mad person. But similar in that multiple opportunities for authorities to step in were wasted.

Even without kids, it's heartbreaking and virtually unreadable to read it, and I can't imagine the anguish those involved have been going through.

They weren't. But that's effectively what he's got.

How could he do those unspeakable things without being mentally ill?

I'm not saying he could have used the 'mental health defence (and he didn't try to), nor am I trying to 'play the mental health card' on his behalf (I'm not}, but how does somebody end up in a place where they want to even contemplate - let alone do - those things?

I have 2 young daughters too, the older one who attends classes like this every week.

I'm sure it’s not a coincidence that today the 2 year olds nursery sent an email detailing their security and lockdown approaches and policies :(
