Is Lent the new Gammon cause celebre? 18:44 - Mar 14 with 7639 viewsZx1988

First we had the collective crushing of grapes at the fact that Charles had celebrated Iftar with Muslims on Ash Wednesday, of all days:

https://thecatholicherald.com/why-does-king-charles-choose-to-highlight-ramadan-

And now it seems to be the go-to response to the usual racists commenting on Town's inclusive social media strategy:

Maybe they could give up being racist c0ckw0mbles for Lent?

Absolutely no one celebrates or wishes people a happy lent. So they are being nobs. Lent is a pointless opportunity for very modest self denial, as a precursor to the spring equinox celebration. Very few people I have ever met take it remotely seriously.

Even Cards r Us doesn't do a Happy Lent card, and they do birthday cards from dogs.

I'll agree with your final sentence.

Even our vicar, who's a high church, sing-the-gospel, incense-and-bells type, and takes most matters of faith rather seriously, doesn't seem to be too fussed about everything between the first Thursday of Lent and Palm Sunday.

A recent Lent course consisted of a church watch-along of Casablanca, with a token tenuous attempt at trying to tie it in with Christ's 40 days in the wilderness.

I agree. Best not used tbh. Even if you dont think it is (in which case you are wrong) then you fuel the ability of those you are criticising to say it is and complain about double standards...

....the OP is a racist calling out a racist.

I genuinely think that apart from "narrative" and "fallacy" then racist is the most common word used on this forum!

Middle-class white males with high blood pressure and reactionary/racist views aren't a race, so cannot be victims of racism.

It is a blatant and obvious reference to people's skin colour. Connecting such people with being bigots.

Being ruddy of face, be it through high blood pressure, excessive alcohol consumption, or just general outrage at non-white, non-British, non-Christians being treated as human beings, isn't a racial characteristic.

Can we all PLEASE consider the feelings of the angry white racists. The REAL victims of bigotry nowadays.

Poor sods can't even call for buildings to be burnt down with women and children inside them without being locked away these days.

Its clearly a reference to a stereotypical white person of a certain age and mindset.

Use the reverse -check and ask yourself whether referring to another race by reference tiothe colour of their face when angry would be okay.

More to the point- even if you wrongly think its not racist, you are giving the people you want to criticise an absolute open goal to claim double standards and hypocrisy. Be better than them.

What is it, precisely, about this bunch of racist, immigrant hating, transphobic, Islamophobic knuckledraggers, that makes you so keen to jump to their defence?

....and unless you are reading imaginary text then I don't know why you think I am.

But making a racist comment against racists, waters down your argument somewhat.

But then an awful lot of racists argue that their comments aren't racist.

I would tend to agree with you, but respect everybody's right to practice it or believe what they want - unless it gets in the way of human rights or most importantly environmental protection.

There ain't no god which is gonna come along and fix things just in time, we're going to have to do it ourselves - that must not be lost in waffle, as offensive as they may feel to some.

Although most stereotype ' gammons' are white males, not all white males are 'gammons' so how is calling someone a 'gammon' racist? Correlation not causation.

Thats not how it works. In fact its the opposite of how it works. The whole issue of stereotyping is that you tar a racial group with a particular brush by connecting the criticism to their skin colour!

I can't quite work out whether the photo on the tweet shows Mussolini or a prominent member of the Nazi Party. On balance, I think it is Mussolini because of the jaw.

The irony of those criticising the decline of the influence of Christianity in our country is that the vast majority don't go to church.

And surely the Catholic Herald must know that Prince Charles is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, which does not suggest indifference to Christianity on his part?

He has, however, said he wants to support all faiths in this country, which in my view can't be a bad thing.

It's not because of their skin colour, though.

It's because they're a bunch of hate-filled racist f**knuggets, who just happen to be white.

Its not the [insert ethnic group]'s skin colour its the fact that a load of them are knife wielding drug dealers. Thats why its okay to call them [insert colour or description] murderers.

I think that post is a fallacy, plenty of other words that are used more than those.

To be honest it looks like you're pushing a narrative.
