Is Lent the new Gammon cause celebre? 18:44 - Mar 14 with 7642 viewsZx1988

First we had the collective crushing of grapes at the fact that Charles had celebrated Iftar with Muslims on Ash Wednesday, of all days:

And now it seems to be the go-to response to the usual racists commenting on Town's inclusive social media strategy:

Maybe they could give up being racist c0ckw0mbles for Lent?

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Is there any left wing insults you won't defend? I doubt it.

Not defended anything, just pointed out the ridiculous assertion that it's racist.

I think in general people are defending the principle of the first point you make, not specifically that poster.

I agree with you, but seemingly it's not as beyond doubt as you would think.

a court of appeal decision a couple of weeks ago dealt with discriminatory stereotyping in the context of belief. essentially applying a broad stereotype to someone, and saying that they share the views of some disparaged group, just because they hold some much narrower belief, can be discriminatory. calling someone a 'gammon' without knowing whether they share all the cliched views of that invented stereotype seems to fall within that.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Not defending anyone..... on 13:23 - Mar 15 by Kievthegreat

Defending someone using a Rudolf Hess avatar seems like a weird hill to die on...

....nobody is defending the "tweeter" in the slightest, point out where anyone has if you can, but you can't obviously.

The discussion is about whether the term "Gammon" is racist or not.

Some think it is, some think it isn't.

It can't be that difficult to get your head round surely?

I’m white as well, well I’m a bit brown as I’m always outside and probably don’t wash as much as I should.

I love a bit of Gammon and pineapple.

Shoot me.

while the term 'gammon' is undoubtedly discriminatory stereotyping, i wouldn't want to defend someone who uses a photo of rudolph hess on his twitter profile.

Hadn't seen your post, but pretty sure that's Rudolf Hess.

Yes, that's who it is.

Whilst it is not an expression I have ever used, it seems to me that gammon is a political insult which in the main is used by white people against other white people.

To suggest it is racist strikes me as being nonsensical.

And interestingly, a surprisingly high proportion of non-white people voted for Brexit.

I care about it for different reasons than racist or not racist.

By using the word gammon the original poster lost control of the discourse. The subsequent conversation has been about the word gammon and racism. Not the stupidity of calling out IT social media for not mentioning lent.

Exactly as Bloots intended. Job well done for the 'definitely not defending it' crew.

Actually, the discussion was about lent and it's use by people complaining about inclusivity. This Gammon detour was whataboutery and a derailing of the discussion.

Saying the term gammon is racist is about as gammon as you can get. It’s completely ridiculous.

Isn't that the fault of the poster who had a valid point, but decided to throw a divisive comment into a post about inclusivity and then wondered why that hypocrisy was called out.
