I wasn't there but can recall hearing of fistikuffs.
Wasn't it a late Mick Marsh equaliser for them? The game was around Easter time.
I remember a Southend away game later than this one and Kingy was there,a load of town boys wanted to go into Southend town itself and he was having none of it.
I remember being out driving when the news came through that Southend had scored that late goal. It was our 4th defeat in the last 5 matches during April ‘96 with only the Gunn air kick derby win to break the pattern. I remember shouting out loud, “They’re blowing it!” (A run to the play-offs). We then won the next two games (Portsmouth away and Huddersfield at home) before getting spiked by the goalless draw with Millwall on the last day and everyone else winning.
I was there but don't remember any trouble. Mind you, I would always walk the other way at the first sign of unpleasantness.
Two things I do remember from that afternoon:
1. Richard Wright had become first-choice keeper earlier in the year, but was left out of this one after conceding five at Tranmere in the previous game, so Craig Forrest was back. Mike Marsh's late winner was a long-range punt that looped over Forrest. I can't remember if he could have done better with it, but at the end of the game when he applauded the away fans, some sang Richard Wright's song back at him. Understandably, he looked massively p!ssed off.
2. Maurico Taricco, quickly becoming a bit of a hero, missed this game. Probably suspended, I imagine. But he was sitting just behind me, with his dad.

I was there that day. Certainly was a long range Mike Marsh late winner. The only other thing I can recall was Craig Forrest being annoyed at some abuse he was receiving from our support. He was only in goal that day due to Richard Wright being injured.

Can’t overly remember the game except last minute winner, probably a bit of minor fisticuffs where the fans were divided. Taricco was just sitting behind/near me also, in his club suit if I remember. Pretty sure I paid on the day at turnstile and there was people in the aisles and all sorts, probably too many for the capacity of stand.

As the video shows, there’s not much Craig could have done with Marsh’s shot, but the equaliser could definitely be filed in the “Could have done better” category.
