KM has broken up the side he inherited 04:18 - Sep 2 with 1592 viewsmuccletonjoe

Chaplin, Morsy , Edmondson, Burgess were all players signed by Paul Cook. Let's see how he gets on putting his own team together, rather than one which was started for him.

Time will tell I guess. Hell of a change to the squad though. We can't afford any of this gelling together time so many are happy to talk about.
I still have confidence in KM, but it has to work quickly.

Kmac has credit in the bank.... still.... but we've got to see some improvement soon. A glimpse of the side coming together and giving us some hope that we'll be a good side again.
I'd happily take play-offs. Always have done and never understood why so many thought we'd be a cert for promotion. We haven't played well as a team for over a year and we have to go from winning 4 games a season to 27 or 28 to get the autos just by virtue of playing lesser quality teams. Always thought it would be tough, but these players leaving have taken the "good feel" factor away. Would love to see both Morsy and Chappers stay as I think they're important characters. I get it... but think we made it a little too easy for them to leave.
I'm happy to be a little patient and just aim for a second half season push for the top six as a minimum requirement. Don't really know what to expect with this team. So many unknowns. Good on paper and expensive doesn't mean it will happen.

And we are one of the favourites for top two. We've spent a lot; we're a big scalp. Teams will set out to frustrate us and will raise their game. Will be a tough season.

This is an important point, but it needs a big caveat: much of the core of that team (Morsy, Luongo, Chappers, Burgess) had gone as far as they could. They weren’t good enough for the Prem and at their ages they weren’t getting any better - in all four of those cases, they were likely to decline. The point about having reached their ceiling is also true of Woolfie and even Burns if we are realistic. It’s sad to see any of them go, especially Chappers, but if the plan is constant improvement to a sustainable higher level, all these outgoings are logical. Now some of the incomings are stopgaps - Szmodics (and though it didn’t work out Phillips) last year, Furlong and Akpom this year for example probably only have two more years as high end Champ starters/ lower Prem squad players left, but they’ll do the job Morsy/Luongo/Burgess did when they came in at that level/age bracket - at least that seems plausible. So I get the point about sentiment and to an extent the point about risk, but when people are saying there’s no direction, I disagree.

You talk as if we're already back in the PL.

Getting rid of players who aren't good enough for the PL.... yet we aren't in the PL.

Just one season in the PL....and a miserable one, at that.... yet the fanbase think we're PL elect. Think we might need to come back to earth first before we start looking ahead to next season in the PL.

Worth remembering that he didn’t inherit Davis, Luongo, Harry Clarke, Harness, Broadhead, Ladapo, Tuanzabi, Hutchinson, Sarmiento, Moore and Hirst. All important players in our promotions.

He also rescued Hladky and Burgess from the reserves and made them into outstanding players in our promotion seasons.

Not sure it’s unreasonable for fans to expect an immediate bounce back given our outlay - all parachute teams will. We’ve spent over 150m so I’m sure the owners expectations are high, same for bookies who have us as favourites.

It’s fairly crucial to bounce back quickly - otherwise we’ll have to sell more players. Of Egeli blows up this year he’ll be off to the PL with or without us. Look at Sheff Utd and scum. It gets harder every year you are down.

You can add Woolfenden to the list of those he recused too.

Before McKenna we were playing Toto Nsiala ahead of him.

You're doing it again like so many others.... we're a parachute club... bookies favourites... spent over 150 million. So many pencilled in re-promotion well before we were even relegated. Surely the most important thing is how we look on the pitch and our results.
If we start stringing some performances and ultimately some results together and start to look like a promotion side then I'll start believing. For now, I'm expecting it to be a tough challenge.

The insinuation in the OP is almost too laughable to respond to. The team has evolved through several stages since January 2022.

Think we've got to be realistic with it. Yesterday AM we had 30 players which needed fo somehow become 25. The easiest way to do this was by talking to the squad and understanding what they wanted for their careers, and what would be best for the season ahead, and what offers were on the table.

In my eyes we moved 5 on that don't actually effect squad balance, that didnt have a regular future here, but who had offers of regular game time or development options elsewhere.

We held on to Davis, hirst, Taylor all three would of required further recruitment...with wages and what we had spent already I doubt we would of had loads in the pot to get better quality. It hurts seeing those players go due to the memories, but memories aren't the currency of future success, as norwich will attest to by beating bayern munich...

We essentially have to go again, create success 2.0 and the 26 we have now are the ones that will do it if they are capable...reality is if they are not the cost will be mckenna by Christmas.

Time to get behind what we have, fall in love with a new hero, and grin and bear it through this period of gelling...it will get better, the talent is undoubtedly there, lots of football to be played...and if it doesn't, I don't think we will be trapped in this league for to long either way

The OP is largely very very negative, it's hardly surprising

Yeah, and Bobby Robson was just a lucky boy to have Mick Mills, Colin Viljoen, Mick Lambert, Mick McNeil etc in the building.

What a laughable suggestion and the problem with people at the moment. Four players from over 3 years ago were what made McKenna, not the multiple great buys and team he forged. A team started for him. WTF?!!

Yes it's a hugely precarious time and we're all feeling a bit unsure, but stop trying to twist things and rewrite history. Crazy stuff.
