For years they have bought players no other team could afford , operated under conditions which were clearly contradictory to the rules and have had an unfair advantage over every other team in the league. They have assembled teams no other club could aspire to within the rules. They should be banned from the Premier league / Europe for a minimum of 5 years , stripped of all titles and trophies they won with an unfair advantage and fined the sort of sums they overspent. If the Premier league wants to retain any integrity from their own rules. , this has to be a radical punishment , which at least goes some way toward fitting the crimes involved. Man City have no external debt, Liverpool are £400M in debt, Man Utd much more yet only one is being punished. Spurs have spent much more on players yet they can carry on regardless. Total farce enforced by the traditional bigger clubs to prevent clubs like Man City etc from grabbing a slice of the Champions League cake.

Otherwise it's just one relegation and they bounce back immediately and carry on as before. Hardly a deterrent. Also, if it is 100 points now, how does that affect the players' motivation? If you know you're relegated whatever you do, you surely aren't going to be giving it your all as when you were chasing the title? Which means teams who haven't played Man City yet get an unfair advantage.

I think the issue is that a points deduction big enough leads to relegation so they automatically go to the Championship. If they throw them out of the league and expunge the results then the EFL don't have to accept them. While there are lots of people who feel that expulsion from the Prem and EFL is the right punishment, if the independent panel disagree and feel that dropping one division is the right sort of penalty then they need to do it in a way that makes that happen. Some of the reports have suggested that the panel will recommend that the EFL then dock them points next season but that's a choice for the EFL rather than the panel.

Their crimes go much deeper than being in debts , they have for years given false revenue receipts from sponsors, creating double the payments actually recieved, paying players and management vast sums more than had been posted on their accounts. Covering all this up from being investigated to the tune of 114 separate charges, its very difficult to see how they would be in debt when they have been illegally funded to the tune of billions.
| Reported 100 points deduction seems a light sentence to me on 08:57 - Oct 20 with 3131 views | WolfieAtTheBack | There are so many ways round it for City whatever the outcome. If they can't buy players they will produce their own wonder kids from their extensive youth academy system, they probably already have loads coming through that are at a decent level. Fining them is pointless as they have endless amounts of money. If they get a point deduction and go down even to the national league they will come back up again and make a mockery of the other teams who are trying for promotions. So... the only punishment that fits is to expel them from football in England and Europe and they need to start again as a new club from the bottom step and all the previous people involved are banned from football and the new club. They are so rich, they will somehow get out of it, sadly | | | |

To some extent, that is the PL's own fault for not timing the decision for May time, so that the appeal could be processed before the new season started. Also, thae panel cannot base their decision upon speculation as to whether ManC get a sympathetic welcome from the EFL or not. The rule breaking is either worthy of expulsion or it isn't. If there is a scenario where ManC stop trying in the Prem and teams who have previously lost miss out (on Europe, or survival, even the financial benefit of finishing position) as a result, there will be legal challenges.

That’s a separate argument, which is totally irrelevant to the charges and punishment. Those were the rules for the competition, which were voted in by a majority of PL clubs, not just the “big clubs”. This was a systematic abuse of those rules and the competition as a whole, which continues to this day, there isn’t really a book big enough to throw at them. Ignoring the “sport washing” that was the motivation behind this, if you want to change the rules, then make your case, not cook the books.

By all accounts, sounds like 100 point deduction, then another 30 point next season, essentially keeping them in the championship for at least 2 years, a huge fine and the removal of ownership. They'll be back in their right place in the 3rd tier of football before long, and if you speak to City fans, they seemed happier when they won the PO final against Gillingham, than they did winning the PL.

ManC have no external debt only because they are owned by an oil-rich nation state. Their ability to spend, spend, spend (along with Abramovich's Chelsea) is part of what's driven this indebtedness crisis in the first place. When FFP was set up to try to inhibit that imbalance in ownership wealth, ManC simply broke the rules.

All done and dusted and in 3 years they'll be back to fighting for the PL title. This needs a joined up approach from the PL, FA, EFL, Uefa... make the punishment span the number of years they've broken the rules in

So far, this is all speculation. Maybe even the panel testing the water of public opinion.

Removal of ownership would be a very big step, but I'm not sure how the PL could do that. Abu Dhabi would simply claim that the club's executives had gone rogue and deceived them also. Would need a real smoking gun to prove a link to the very top. That's before you bring geopolitics into it.

There are also reports that expulsion was deemed too reckless because of the position it would put the EFL in via admission. My impressions were that the EFL would far rather have the choice of where to admit City, especially for promotion seeking Championship clubs, who do not see why they should deal with the brunt of the punishment with loss of promotion place for a year. Just a further rift between how the top clubs think football should be ran according to them winning medals and the majority of other clubs trying to survive.
| Reported 100 points deduction seems a light sentence to me on 10:01 - Oct 20 with 2650 views | HighgateBlue | This is just the latest rumour which is inconsistent with the last rumour. We'll know the sanction when the sanction is published. Transfer speculation, sanction speculation, we love speculation. It's fun. But it's a soap opera. There's no evidence to support the idea that a 100 point sanction has been decided upon. FWIW, I agree with you that a one-hit 100 point penalty would be insufficient, at least on its own. | | | |

They're playing by their rules, so let them play there or somewhere else, like Saudi. Or even better.... reinvigorate the Super League and they, United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and, of course, Spurs can go there. That's what they want and will get eventually with Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSG, etc.

The length of which needs to depend on the current contracts in their squad. I think they have lots of younger players with 3-5 year contracts so would need to be for a serious period of time.
