Evans Backing Keane
Evans Backing Keane
Thursday, 10th Jun 2010 15:59

Town owner and chairman Marcus Evans is reported to have met with manager Roy Keane yesterday to reassure him regarding his position in the wake of this week’s claims of his likely sacking.

Evans’s helicopter was spotted at the Playford Road Training Centre yesterday. This afternoon’s report claims clear-the-air talks with Keane were the reason for his visit.

Speculation regarding Keane’s future had all but disappeared until earlier this week when a national newspaper claimed that Steve Cotterill, who is understood to be close to being named the new manager of Portsmouth, and Tony Mowbray, said to have met with Evans recently, were in the frame to take over at Portman Road.

Back in March, chief executive Simon Clegg dismissed the then-widespread claims that Keane’s sacking was on the cards.

Meanwhile, Keane himself says he has no regrets about his controversial exit from Ireland’s World Cup campaign in Japan and Korea: “Missing out on the 2002 World Cup finals does not lose me any sleep.

“I enjoyed helping Ireland qualify, and the madness of it all is that people still don’t know the full story. There are as usual plenty of second guesses.

“There was a view within the Irish camp that just because we had qualified, we had done enough. But that did not sit with me.

“With a good manager who’s brought a professional attitude and a new stadium about to open, my hope is that Irish football will be now taken seriously. There has been an improvement, but there is a lot more to be done.”

In Keano we trust. Yes he made mistakes but which manager hasn't.

He's done brilliantly with Wickham, Leadbitter, Delaney and the second half of the achieved some good results including comfortably the double over the supposedly wonderful Cardiff.

Roll on August and a few new signings.

Blueknight, very well said indeed sir !

Its ChambersM, the bore of TWTD, yawn yawn yawn... ZZZZZZZZ

So ChambersM, Keano is rubbish, his signings have been rubbish, his style of play is rubbish, his publicity is rubbish and so on and so on, yawn, snore etc...

Why is it that I have never heard you call for the mans head who hired him ? - Surely if this guy is so bad for our club and is doing so much damage, then you should be calling for the man who employed him to go as well ?? - Makes sense right ?

Everyone has a right to an opinion, but you are a clown and as I have said before, every post you write is the same, negative and boring.

Will see you out side the Corn Exchange in May for the open top bus ride jumping on that promotion bandwagon that you and a few other so called supporters will be on.

No, but EVERYONE knows what your opinion is, so why repeat it time and time again ? Whats the point ?

You pay your money, you have a right to an opinion, Keane aint everyones cup of tea but he deserves a fair crack, the legend sir bobby was awful in his first year and went on to great things.

I like Keane, but even I won't stand for another season like last season and I wont be afraid to call for his head if I believe he should go. I did the same with Jim! - But give the fella a chance, anyway who says a season is enough is living in a dream world, he has a proven record of winning this division so he deserves the benifit of the doubt.

Roy Keane might have had some success as a manager but if we want exciting, entertaining football then we must move on. After 24 years as a season ticket holder i am have decided not to renew since he will still be the manager ........and when you are on the terraces watching total dross and wasting your time - think about whose fault it is for the lack of width and invention. I love Ipswich Town and do not want this thug in charge of my team

Once again their are morons on here comparing keane to robson...

Most managers who have a poor start dont end up being great managers, for every great turn around in fortunes there are many that dont go that way. Even if we had replicated the second half of the seasons form for the whole season we'd have been a couple of places higher...but if every team pickjed their best half of the season and replicated it......
keane lacks the dignity and decency of robson as a human being...can you imagine robson walking out on his country, can you imagine robson setting out to end a players career..
I also doubt robson would have behaved as keane did when i used to see him frequently in the clubs and bars of nottingham(he was hated), yes he was young, but most young people dont go around the way keane did...

Robson took over an already struggling side btw and the moaning was because the didn't immediatley improve....thats not whats happened here.

Hope is a good breakfast but it is a bad supper.

Monkey_Blue, CLEARLY you are the moron on here, no one is comparing him to SBR, was just using it as an example as someone who was given time !!

Paul Mariner: Can I just suggest you never come back regardless of whether Keano is here next season or not and while you're at it look up 'supporter' in the dictionary. I again refer to the great Bobby Robson and ALex Ferguson who took many seasons to iron out the creases. Keano had the best mentor there was and has the ability to apply this over time. Of course back then managers were given time and we'd be suprised at one sacking a season, now you can expect two or three before christmas. Burley took 6 seasons to get us up and because Keano hasnt in the first season then he should be sacked? wake up, sit back and start supporting.

Well said LEAGUEONESCUM !!! People need to start becoming true supporters ! And not just support us when we're winning !

Being a fan doesn't mean pretending you think the manager is the right man.

I repeat keane is nothing like robson and nothing like ferguson. Do you think bobby felt two days a week of training was as much as the players or he could handle. If you think its out of order for a man who owns the club and has just given you 30m to spend doesn't have the right to ask questions about the teams performance your head is not on right...can you imagine telling your boss its none of his business how well you are performing?
Burley has us playing good football and challenging and didn't have any money to spend..he took over and ageing side that needed revamping, keane took over a progressing side. I couldn't wait for saturday when george was in charge...you could see a team, even when he spent big he had generated the cash.

There is a difference between getting on the teams back at games and having your say about the manager in forums like this...I love the club and support it and want keane to do well, but whats the point in pretending i think he has or will do well or that i don't think we would do better with other managers.

Shame ! Keane is a misguided ,self- opinionated, blinkered, inept manager . He was and remains an obstacle in the way of moving the club forward . He has uttered some inane comments last season and caused a total lack of cohesion and unity within the team . I'm not at all surprised he has no regrets foul-mouthing Mick McCarthy . It says a lot of about our manager !

The 10 Classic Roy Keane Quotes article is worth a read, especially 1 and 3: www.guardian.co.uk/football/2006/aug/24/sport.comment I try to keep this to the back of my mind, as rationally there is no way I want this man anywhere near Ipswich Town.

Monkey blue: I'f i'd recorded all the nonsense that has spilt from the mouths of Ferguson and Clough It'd probably take a year to watch it. He is strongly opiniated and of course sometimes he gets it wrong but for you to dismiss him after one season is premature. Do you want a Magilton who wraps the players up after a dismal performance or someone like the Keane who gives it to them? Hopefully you're old enought to realise it won't happen overnight.
0

ChambersM added 18:35 - Jun 10
tbh id rather have a manager who doesnt care the players into plying well?
0

Monkey_Blue added 18:45 - Jun 10
leagueonescum... Magilton won games, he has better record than keane at this club after his first season and as I thought you wern't allowed to criticise managers how can you criticise magilton.

Clough and ferguson had the sucess to match , plus they were in the game a hell of a long time...they never advocated ending players careers. There are lots of players who have played for great managers and not been great managers themselves...the same as many great players have been poor managers. Keane is the sort of guy who will not learn from others, he'll do it his way

I agree with some of what you say monkey: but this guy has been in charge for ONE year. I'm sure you say things you later regret or don't mean: his mouth proceeds him I agree but I have seen some promising games this season as well as some not so promising. You have no idea what Keane will achieve and having annual managers is only going to rock what is traditionally a stable and secure club.
