Jewell Delighted With Another Three Points Saturday, 5th Feb 2011 18:21
Boss Paul Jewell was delighted with the three points as his side defeated Sheffield United 3-0 at Portman Road, their third league victory on the spin. The Blues boss compared striker Connor Wickham’s brilliant third with a Thierry Henry goal from years gone by.
Jewell said: “At the end of the day, let’s not kid ourselves, it’s an important three points. The first half, with the windy conditions and the lively pitch, it was never a classic.
“We said at half-time that if it was going to be ugly again in the second half, if we have to win horrible, we have to win horrible.
“As a footballer the worst conditions are those gale force winds and I don’t think you can appreciate how bad it was at pitch level.”
Even so, the Town manager felt his side performed much better after the break: “In the second half the game opened up a little bit, certainly after we got the second one and we looked a different team.
“That belief only comes with winning matches, scoring goals, keeping clean sheets and all the stuff you need to do to be successful.
“To win three league games on the bounce at any level is very difficult, so a big credit to them, but now we forget about that, try and learn from it and move on towards Barnsley next week.”
Jewell hailed Wickham’s goal, the youngster’s best for the club so far: “It was a great goal, if anyone else had come on the pitch he would have gone past them as well! It was a great goal and it should do bundles for his confidence — and his price!
“He’s got that in his locker. In a 17-year-old player you’re going to get inconsistencies, he’s going to be up and down. He can do that and we’d like him to do stuff on a more regular basis but we have to be patient with him because he’s just a young player.
“It was just a brilliant goal, it was like Thierry Henry’s against Tottenham all those years ago in a north London derby where he picked it up went past everyone.”
Blades boss Micky Adams was honest in defeat: “Can it get any worse? I hope not. You have to be fearful that it could. We’re disappointed. It’s hard to think of any positives at this moment in time.
“Taking away all the goals, the two sendings off were ridiculous from our point of view. I’m not complaining, there’s no need for Lee Williamson to get involved, I can’t condone what either of them did really.
“Kozluk was upset with the tackle on him and I could see why he was upset, but it had gone. He’s experienced and he should know better.
“Having said that, the game was already over anyway. We’re having a problem when we get to the final third, we either don’t deliver the right ball or because confidence is so fragile at the moment, we’re looking to set people up rather than pull the trigger ourselves.
“We have to defend properly and obviously the first two goals were killers because we haven’t defended two set pieces, which is disappointing. Things that can be avoidable, we got wrong today.”

football league show was hilairous tonight. nowrich losing (holt giving away the goal) a player couldnt play becasue of "man flu" not a mention of austin on extened highlights of his burnley team and a wonder goal and performance. makes tomooroos 16 hours shift a little easier :)
and paul jewel is god last time i remeber a goal like that was one mauricio tarricco "chargeing down the pitch like a gazzel on the sarengetti" against crystal palace in 90somthingorrather...
Well, I have tried to change my avatar too to fit in, won't work for some reason! Sure I got rid of this avatar of Keane a while back anyway. adamisablue- Lets hope Norwich come 7th, I would laugh my head off for weeks!
was at PR for that game, turned out to be his last :( well we are up to the dizzy heights of 14th :) to be fair i wouldnt want to go up now, id like to build a firm base before we do, dont wanna do a derby now do we/ (sorry paul...) lets start by bring back the stabilaty. oh yeah, did anyone see millwalls manager claiming lisbies goal was an og? made me crap myself laughing...
Garv oh yes bullard is a true blue after only two games, and lee Martin like a new signing keep that up and I'd say he was worth every penny shame keane tried to destroy his confidence too!!!
Oh and pjisgod I was in town too but couldn't focus on let's to type!!! For me its things like Martin showing his worth, leadbitter penalty aside having best game in ages and i said pre game delaney will score, what more can the lad do to prove he is worth contract? Edwards Still not perfect right back but coming foward playing dome of his best football. I go for top eight finish!! oh and I just hope by some miracle we can sign lee jimmy bullard, maybe long term player coach role as clearly inspiration
sorry blue lady if that was leadbitters best game in awhile id hate to seen his worst. too many negative passes backwards when he had time to put a foot on it and look up and too many lofted punts to nowhere without looking up, think he needs to raise his game or he will be surplus to requirements and hope hes watching and learning from bullards set pieces but hats of to pj for playing a settled team and hopefully gl,s confidence will return and play more positively, a repeat of our 2nd half performance in future games can only mean more wins a steady climb up the league and a team oozing with confidence. about to meet up for a beer with some canary mates and looking forward to it for a change
I,m so proud of the way our team played today, well done Mr Jewell for picking a settled side and well done young man for that superb individual goal. Admittedly Sheffield Utd were very poor, but you can only beat what is put before you. Onwards & upwards.
Poringland not saying he was good just better than he has been recently, was woeful Tuesday. he showed some positive signs yesterday and I think jewell will nurture it out of him.
Looking at our remaining home game, they all look very winnable; Watford (who are now beginning to slip),Norwich (but anything can happen in a local Derby) and possibly Hull look the most diffiult. I can see no reason why we can't finish top half of the table IF we continue to play as we did in the second half yesterday.
Well done to Jewell and the boys. Great ball by Connor. Amhoping for just one or two loan additions; a right-back and a striker (as Scotland looks out of form and Wickham is being used wide left/right - which only leaves Priskin).
Don't even remember how poor the first half was ... the second was sooo fantastic!! Lovely to see not only Fulop, but also Bullard (who had been substituted by then) race to join in with the celebrations for Connor's fantastic solo goal! Please, please sort out the contracts of Delaney, Norris & McAulay ... we need them ... and they all played out of their skins ... so they obvioulsy don't want to go anywhere either! Brilliant stuff. Thank you Mr Jewell. Wonder what RK thinks if he was watching ...
So the last 3 league games we have scored 8 goals, not bad for a team Keane said didn't have goals in them and that is without our striker scoring! Amazing what a bit of good man management, adding humour, boosting morale and general confidence building can do. Very early days in the PJ reign, so am trying not to get too excited, but my god the signs are promising, the guy doesn't seem to have put a foot wrong yet, in both players and fans eyes. Now to ensure safety, sort the contracts farce out, right back and striker and happy days!!!
Love that Wickham goal. Doesn't seem like he's that fast but when looking at that Sheff players effort to catch him and ultimate failure can see that he is. Great energy late on. Next 3 games all winable then some tougher looking ones (on paper). Bring on the confidence.
That must be near enough the same team for the last 3/4 games barring Bullard, more of the same please big Paul a settled side! I'm loving the system at the moment with wickham wide and he can always push upfront with tamas and we've got options in midfield (hoping luca starts to make more and more appearances in the coming matches).
