Jewell: Leeds Will Feel Hard Done By
Jewell: Leeds Will Feel Hard Done By
Saturday, 27th Aug 2011 18:49

Blues boss Paul Jewell admitted that Leeds will have felt hard done by after Town’s 2-1 victory at Portman Road. Jason Scotland and Keith Andrews netted late goals for the Blues after the visitors had been reduced to 10 men.

Jewell said: “Let’s have it right, Leeds are a good team and they outplayed us in the first half, we’ve got to say that.

“When you’ve lost by five and seven it doesn’t matter what you say, the players are edgy, very, very nervous and on the back foot.

“It’s difficult when you’ve just been humiliated. I saw Leeds last week at West Ham and they were excellent and they should have won.

“They will feel a little bit hard done by. Last week, we didn’t deserve any luck, let’s get that right, but we had three or four decisions that went against us.

“Today we had a couple that went our way and a deflection. Nothing’s all rosy in the garden, we know we’ve got a lot of work to do. But tonight’s not a night to analyse it, it’s just a night to go ‘thank Christ for that!’."

The Blues boss had praise for sub Jason Scotland: “He came back and has worked hard in pre-season. When I was naming the subs today I looked at his record against Leeds and he’s got a decent record against them from when he was at Swansea. So, I stuck him on the bench and he scored one and made one.”

Leeds boss Simon Grayson was unhappy with the decision which led to Aidy White being sent off for a foul on Jay Emmanuel-Thomas but Jewell felt there was no argument: “I just said to Larry [Simon Grayson] that if he’s the last man then he has to go. Larry seems to think it might have been a nudge but a nudge isn’t a foul.

“One’s 6ft 3 and the other kid’s 5ft 7. He lives round the corner from me in Leeds and is a friend of my kids! He’s a lovely kid as well.

“I was more interested in getting a penalty than getting the lad sent off. But once he’s last man and he brings him down, he’s got to go.”

The Town manager did agree with Grayson that Leeds should have been awarded a spotkick when Carlos Edwards fouled Max Gradel just before the Blues' winner: “I didn’t have a great view but it looked a penalty to me. I asked Carlos after the game and he said it was 50-50 which probably tells me all I need to know.”

Whites boss Simon Grayson thought the match hinged on the red card: “I think the whole game changed on the sending off decision. I thought in the first half we were outstanding.

“An Ipswich team which has been put together with some internationals and has cost a lot of money never created a chance against us.”

Grayson is considering an appeal as he feels Aidy White was fouled first: “I’ve seen it, and people might differ with me, but it’s a freekick on Aidy White to start with.

“He and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas are running through, Emmanuel-Thomas has nudged him in the back and he’s fallen over, which is why Aidy’s brought him down. That changed the game because we weren’t in any danger of losing that match today.”

Grayson also felt his side should have been given a spotkick: “Max Gradel could have had a penalty on another day. If it was a freekick outside the box we would have got it, inside it isn’t given.

“I’m not here to slaughter the referee but decisions can change the complexion of games and the whole result of games.”

We were outplayed in the first half and our lack of confidence showed, but it looked a definite red card from where I was sitting. This gave us belief and we were able to do the business and turn the game around.

Well done to the new signings. Sonko looked very good in defence, Murphy battled hard and a clearly very rusty Bullard at least always wanted the ball and gave everyone a lift.

I was hearing that we have to let new signings "gel" in October 2009 when we didn't have a win to our names, and at least despite it being a disappointing August we did manage two wins and have six points on the table. Once the new signings settle in and confidence restores itself, we will improve. Onward and upward!

Who cares how,why or how pretty we were we won its 3 points at home and people are still moaning just remember last saturdays result, I'd take results like todays every game than lose by 4 or 5

Fair enough but it's about time we had some luck.
A result to hopefully build on!

Sonko is indeed Superman - looks a very good signing!

Scotland worth keeping. You can't assess him as a loan striker with long balls being pumped up to him. He's a proven finisher - give him a decent ball and some support and he'll find the net!

Nice to have Jimmy back - he got the crowd going!

Onwards and upwards!

Definite red card and a proper ref would have given the penalty but not that apology of a ref !

I can NEVER have sympathy for Leeds!!! Their fans were their usual obnoxious selves outside the ground.

It was good to see us get a bit of luck at last - never thought we'd get it from D'Urso. The "penalty" incident was in front of me, I didnt think it was a foul so how Grayson can be so adamant is beyond me.

Sonko looks solid and Delaney looks better with a strong partner. Jimmy's radar was a bit out but his class was evident and Murphy had an excellent game. Wouldn't be surprised to see Leadbitter go this week. He has gone backwards over the past 18 months and I think taking him off signalled the end so far as PJ is concerned. The boy was also, together with Edwards, responsible for their goal.

Still, a morale booster today. Maybe we can now put last week behind us.

I think we're all in agreement that Andy D'Urso had a very poor game.

First half was there's but second half was ours day about 10 men is just pathetic because we had a lot of decision what didn't go our way do we complain. Results don't always go your way that's football so get on with it

Agree itfc94, pmason hasn't got a clue, Town showed some much missing passion today, ok we got a lucky break, but you've still got to put the ball in the net. PJ has shown he can attract the type of player the previous manager couldn't. Sonko was superb, Murphy looked sharp, & although it wasn't vintage Jimmy, he certainly added a spark in the second half. Delaney has only a matter of time (& another new CB) before hes dropped, Leadbitter's days are numbered.

How did JET manage to "nudge" White in the back when he was a half a yard in front of him? I'm impressed.

Spot on with assessment PJ but Grayson gets on my wick and he will moan because they lost when they were in control. The most important thing today was the 3 points and there will be games this season as last week when decisions will not go for us - unbelievable with Mr D'Urso in charge they did today. As PJ indicated we are miles asway from being a decent team but this is a confidence boosting win and hopefully will be a platform for better things. Need a new centre back and right back urgently as Delaney all over the place today as was Edwards for their goal. Well done Scotland for a very well taken goal - I personally don't mind the lad and he worked hard in the summer by the looks of his weight loss and he does know where the net is. Would definitely keep him as opposed to Priskin and think his days may be numbered at ITFC. Finally PJ please get us some desperately needed pace in the side - Danny Haynes anyone - only joking.

First half to Leeds. We looked nervous and totally unbalanced. JET again failed to muster much effort and Leadbutter doesn't work on the left - sorry lead butter just doesn't work!

The sending off was the correct decision - last man and clear on go, even Durrrrrso got this right. Jimmy and Carson were energetic without a big end product. Clear that Jimmy needs practice, but his drive, enthusiasm and class there for all to see.

Big positives were Sonko and especially Murphy who worked tirelessly for the team, held it up well and had some good touches.

One more CB, RB and a quick right winger and that will be a great squad to do battle. There was the odd moment of spark but it was clear that the squad was very thin on confidence - the reaction of several, especially Delaney at the final whistle was testement to that.

The two week break has come at the right time and we finish an amazing week with several positives not least the 3 points.

Be patient all, for me it is still going to take another 6-8 games for the team to gel, for PJ to get more players in and the balance right.

ME/SC please note that i am one of several thousand happy to pay for a chauffeur
to drop Leadlegs off at Fratton park.

Simon Grayson ..... " An Ipswich team which has been put together with some internationals and has cost alot of money never created a chance against us" ..... What a w****r . Our team hasnt cost that much Grayson you plank most are free's or loans and as for not creating any chances thats why our two goals came from open play was it . Poor first half , very pleaded to see some fight in the second half and come back for the win instead of folding and getting hammered . It will come just be patient . COYB

Pmason Leeds are not a crap team. Drawing with West Ham and beating Boro 4-1 crap? Gradel and Snodgrass would be wanted and cause trouble in any Chumpionship team.

Two awful free kicks from Jimmy but because it was him most people just laughed. His cheeky time wasting tactic after Andrews' goal was hilarious.

As others have said today was a confidence boost as much as anything. Losing 7-1 and 5-2 is no different to losing 1-0, its still only three points we lose (and some goal difference)). All it did was drain us of confidence and we have atleast some of that back because of today.

Was about time we had some luck with the deflulection but the build up was lovely, perfect pass from Cresswell, exquisite touch from Scotland and a midfield breaking run from Andrews as we've seen him do numerous times ALREADY brought about a good quality goal and three points for the town!

Good time for a two week break I say. Time to get another defender or two before Blackpool and for PJ and his staff to ORGANIZE the team which is what we need, there just doesn't seem to be any sort of plan of getting the ball from Delaney/Sonko up to Chopra/Murphy/Scotland without punting it high (Cresswell's pass aside, that opening was made by Scotland's touch).

Onwards and upwards, COYB.

pmason - I don't know why people are shooting you down your original comments because 50% of what you said was spot on. It was a "terrible game" and we would have "most likely lost" if it wasn't for the red card.

I'm hoping PJ has finally seen the light when it comes to Leadbitter.
