Town Make Move for Leicester's St Ledger
Town Make Move for Leicester's St Ledger
Thursday, 5th Jan 2012 14:00

Town boss Paul Jewell has confirmed that Leicester central defender Sean St Ledger is one of the two signings he is hoping to make before the Blues face Birmingham at St Andrew’s next Wednesday. Jewell has already approached the Foxes regarding St Ledger, who he targeted when he was at Preston last January, again in the summer and with whom the Blues were linked yesterday.

Jewell said: “I’ve spoken to Leicester about Sean St Ledger’s availability. He is someone we’re interested in and are trying to pursue.

“There are a few clubs in for him, one from Serie A. Whether we can get Sean to come here remains to be seen.

“Leicester have said they’ll be prepared to do something and we’re still talking to them to see if we can get the lad to come here.”

The Town boss, who is looking to take the 27-year-old on an initial loan with a view to a permanent deal with no fee yet agreed between the clubs, is hoping to speak to the player today: “I’ve spoken with Nigel Pearson, I’ve spoken to assistant manager Steve Walsh and I’ve spoken to the agent to see if he would be interested.

“He said he’d got a bit of interest from a lot of clubs in the Championship and one in Italy. I’m hoping that I can speak to Leicester and have a chat with the player today.”

St Ledger, who is 5ft 11in tall, was recently transfer-listed by Leicester following a row with Pearson after he was omitted from their side taking on the Blues on Boxing Day.

The Birmingham-born defender only signed a three-year deal at Leicester in the summer after making a £1.2 million move from Preston, having started his career with Peterborough and having had a loan spell at Middlesbrough during his five years at Deepdale.

St Ledger, who has been capped 20 times by Ireland, scoring two goals, has subsequently made only 10 starts and two substitute appearances for the Foxes, leading to his fall-out with Pearson.

Meanwhile, Jewell dismissed the recent link with Newcastle veteran Alan Smith and rumours claiming Crystal Palace keeper Julian Speroni and Millwall midfielder James Henry were Blues targets, although he admitted that the latter had previously been on his radar: “He was early in the season, but he isn’t now.”

Would be a great signing, along with that Paul Green from Derby. Starting to build a solid base to the side.

Poor signing. Do we want to be saddled with him for three years? Jewell really has lost the plot.

Would be a very good signing, hopefully for a bit less than £1.2 million though.

Love to see him here, his positional intelligence could save our butts from the drop

Would have preferred Steve Walsh. Top player in his day.

Cheshire - if you were referring to me, I was being deadly serious. St Leger is not a good player and we will regret signing him. We are still suffering from poor signings on long contracts by the previous manager and at this rate Jewell's legacy is not likely to be any better. We should wait until the summer and look abroad for a pair of CBs.

I live nr leicester and know a few supporters, and they have said in the past that they were really excited about his signing, but he has seemed out of his depth and has left them disappointed.

I always rated him though.

Even when Preston were in trouble he always performed, would love to see him, darcy blake and paul green all come but i presume other clubs will attract them more than us.

An initial loan............so he'll play here until the end of the season, and then sign for a bigger club because he has done well. Sorry if i'm being overly pessimistic.

Ship Damien Delayed-Knee and Tommy Smith out and bring St Legend in!

Awesome signing.

Smaller than Ingimarsson? No thanks!

Seriously though I'm not convinced. Not going to pretend I know everything about the player, and what he is worth and whatever like many others do but wasn't good enough to keep Preston up and hasn't really had a look in at a stuttering Leicester.

I think there is better out there for less money, and that's just the fee - he's on 20k up there!

initial loan sounds good if he hasnt done that well at Leicester, mind nor have many other big signings to be fair.......

Why hasnt he played for Leicester much? Bamba and Mills, simple, not many would get in ahead of them.

the problem at this club seems to be coaching rather than players. time and time again we hear about basic defending errors. Good coaching should eradicate this.

I'd say he'd only tell us this if he were pretty confident. Fans finally getting their wish, as we did with Chopra and Bullard. Let's hope he's less of a let down! Can't be any worse than Delaney though, I'd pay to see him leave!

Near the bottom of the league and Paul Jewell's worried more about horse racing ...

I know nothing about St Ledger but guess he was playing when Town failed to score on recent cold and miserable trips to Deepdale.

Glad we are making the right noises - really hope that we get someone in who is man enough to take responsibility for the mess at the back and we can rely upon and build around for the next 5-6 seasons.
