Jewell: Same Old Story
Jewell: Same Old Story
Saturday, 7th Jan 2012 18:05

Town manager Paul Jewell was again left frustrated by his side’s tendency to concede bad goals as the Blues lost 3-1 at Hull City in the FA Cup.

Jewell said: “It’s the same old story. The first two goals were just bad goals, then we got ourselves back in the game with a bit of a fightback in the second half, have two good opportunities to equalise, and then the third Hull goal, you have to see it to believe it.

“That sums us up and that’s why we are where we are - because of that calamitous defending. We give teams goal starts every week.

“Even when we beat Barnsley we had to come back from 2-0 down. You’ve seen the goals, if you see goals like that at a lot lower standard league than this you’d be scratching your head.”

He says his team need to show their second half spirit for entire games: “We showed character in the second half, but why don’t we show that all game?

“In the first 10 minutes we started OK, then one long ball, more often than not, puts us on the back foot. We just can’t defend or are not defending individually or as a group.

“It’s almost as if they take in turn to make a rick. They’re not even basic errors. I don’t know how the second goal goes in. On the first goal we’re trying to get Damien Delaney off because he was injured and we couldn’t get the ball out of play.

“Any strength test we lose, any race we’re losing, and it was the same against Forest and against Reading. When it becomes nitty-gritty we don’t win enough battles.”

“To a certain extent it’s psychological," he added. "We know confidence is at a low. We showed in the second half that we’ve got a bit about us, but we show it for 45 minutes or 44 minutes, which isn’t enough. We’ve got to show it over the whole game, from the first whistle to the last whistle, however long the game is.

“It’s not just today. We are why where we are in the league because of defensive errors. Everyone seems to take a turn at having one."

Jewell confirmed that Delaney’s injury was to his foot which recently had a screw inserted into it with the Blues now down to two fit senior centre-halves, Ibrahima Sonko and Tommy Smith: “It looks like his foot. We were trying to get the ball out of play, but it didn’t quite happen.

"Every goal should have been avoided. I know every manager says that, but the manner in which we leak goals is unbelievable.”

Hull caretaker-boss Nicky Barmby, who is set to be confirmed in the position full-time on Monday, was delighted to go into round four: “I’m very pleased we got the win. In the first half we played some good stuff and I was pleased that we went in 2-0 up at half-time because we knew that Ipswich would come at us as they had nothing to lose, especially in the cup at 2-0 down.

“We saw them against Barnsley when they reversed that scoreline and ended up winning, so we knew they were a dangerous side.

“We didn’t really get our football going in the second half until the final 10 or 15 minutes but we’re well pleased that we scored three goals at home, so all in all it’s a good day for us.”

What the hell goes on in training Paul?

Never have I been so ashamed of what's happening to our club.

We are league one bound.

JEWELL OUT.

The fact that we signed him in the first place is a disgrace. Is anyone at our club not utterly incompetent?

**Sorry - but am just going to re-post my match report comment (with minor amendment). Maybe the remaining few PJ fans can cheer us up and argue these points:**

Let's be clear on two points: Hull rested SEVEN first team regulars; although we played better second half - let's not forget that Hull - chasing promotion - were already two up and took their foot off the gas and they still won easily. No excuses please.

I have been slated by several people on here, so perhaps someone could help me out - what are the positives in the following:

1. Knocked out of league cup FIRST ROUND - by Northampton at HOME

2. Knocked out of FA Cup at FIRST ATTEMPT

3. Sit 20th in the league - 3 points off relegation

4. Lost TEN of last THIRTEEN

5. Worst run of results since 1994 a few weeks ago

6. Conceeded 53 in last 25 games. Almost 100 since PJ has been here

7. Relied on injury prone freebies and loans - loans have gone and STILL no replacements.

8. Lost 7 out of 12 at HOME this season

Can people HONESTLY see positives in what PJ is doing? More importantly, how on earth can ME and Clegg still support this AND have the gall to say we are making progress ....

Back to today - why was Ellington picked? Team selection was again poor.

Finally, PJ signed Ellington, JET and Chopra in the Summer - yet it is Scotland a RK signing who is our best striker - enough said.

JEWELL - do the right thing and leave if not ME SACK HIM.

I still think he can turn it around, I think Sir Bobby used to time to get it right, same with Sir Alex...
Can we just support the manager and get some positivity around the place, IT DOES NOT HELP that we call for his head, we know it wont happen yet...

Sign St.Ledger, Adam Smith, Keith Andrews and Paul Green, that would be enough...
Anyways, Im awaiting someone to absolutely butcher my comment but I as a norwegian 17 year old stands for it and Im sick of us fans arguing about it, would be so nice if we could stand together as a team for once, please.

Blame the fact that we lost on inept team selection Delaney not 100% fit Edwards no defender caught upfield yet again to often Jet a complete waste of space ,if only he was on loan we could send him back after all 3 other championship clubs had him on loan and didn't rate him, and if you are only going to play one up front put Murphy there a physical presence who can win a ball in the air and why no Lee Martin as he has been one of our better players lately? Also things have gone pear shaped again with captain Leadboots back in the team.

Couldn't agree more Sindre94, it has proved that sacking managers has not been the answer cos they just inherit the team try to but new signings doesnt work out get sacked ... we need to stick with a manager, i believe jewell is the right man we just need to give him time it was never an agreement for him to get us up in one season. I am sure we will scrap relegation his time buy one or two hungry players and push for the playoffs next season.
Give him time to get it right and people stop slating him off!

What a pathetic post match interview, talk about throwing in the towel which is what he should do, this along with the body language displayed during a midweek press conference says it all to me, we are going nowhere and it is time we as supporters of our club make a stand, we are being constantly ripped off:
Inflated prices - how much for a drink and a pie!!
Consistently poor home performances
No spirit, no urgency, no committment
A CEO who doesn't have a clue
A faceless owner - we need a figurehead at the helm
I like everyone else am very aware how much money ME has invested in this club and without this well who knows? but he needs to take a serious look at what is going on here, his so called advisor should be faced with instant dismissal - again a very poor appt, in fact all the appt's have been poor.
I thought PJ would do much better than this, as it happens he couldn't have done much worse, the backbone of our club has been stripped. our youths have gone or certainly soon will, action must happen and soon before it is too late.
Jewell and Clegg OUT!!!!!!!!! Booooooooooooooooo!!!!

Let's get some new signings through the door next week, young hungry players. We need to spend some real cash Mr Evans or we may be heading into League One.

AliceTheobald95 and Sindre94 are you having a laugh !!

How much time do you want to give PJ ? I never thought he would get us promotion on one season but at least build a squad that could compete.
We have not moved forward at all - and are heading for League One ! His tactics, team selection and signings have been embarrassing.
Do you honestly think we are going to attract quality players when we heading for relegation ?
Its time for you to wake up and smell the coffee !

WTF. Every f***ing week he changes the team selection. How are they going to play well with each other changing the team every game. We had Ellington started instead of Scotland? JEWELL OUT.

Garv added 18:39 - Jan 7
Jas I agree mostly.

But I have no problem with the team picked today.

No point signing Ellington if he's never going to start. The cup is the perfect time to check out fringe players. We did that and we're out the cup which let's be honest we couldn't care less about but I'm sure we'll agree losing today gives us more indications of our problems. It's not about going out of the cup.
