Town are reported to be interested in Huddersfield centre-half Peter Clarke. The 30-year-old could be surplus to requirements at the Galpharm Stadium with the Terriers having completed the signing of Cardiff's Anthony Gerrard, a player who was mentioned in connection with the Blues earlier in the summer.

Southport-born Clarke started his career with Everton, joining Blackpool, Port Vale and Coventry on loan while with the Toffeemen.

In 2004 the 6ft 2in tall centre-half returned to Blackpool initially on loan but with the switch made permanent for £150,000.

Two years later, having been the Seasiders’ skipper, he moved on to Southend - who he also captained - during their time in the Championship, then joined Huddersfield in June 2009.

Contracted until 2014, Clarke, who was capped eight times by England at U21 level, is the club captain of the West Yorkshire side. While with the Terriers Clarke has been their Player of the Year twice, 2009/10 and 2010/11, as well as being named PFA League One Fans' Player of the Year in 2010/11.

In May, he scored his spotkick as Huddersfield beat Sheffield United 8-7 in a Wembley play-off penalty shoot-out involving 22 players after a 0-0 draw to claim a place in the Championship.

Another centre-half is very much in Paul Jewell’s thoughts with Celtic’s Kelvin Wilson linked over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Brighton have been linked with long-time Blues target Steve Davies, for whom Town and Derby have been unable to agree a fee.

If he's not good enough for them then why would he be for us?

So Huddersfied sign two new centre halfs (Gerrard and Lynch) with experience of playing in the Championship and then palm us off with their League 1 cast-offs?

Thought he was the rock at the back for them? Surprised they want to (supposedly) get rid of him.

Could be a leader at the back.

I don't mind if this fourth centre back isn't a guaranteed starter, just someone to challenge for the first team and provide competition and back up at the least. I wouldn't be disappointed to see Delaney or Smith line up alongside Chambers on the first day, just as long as we have four centre backs in the squad. Our problems last year came about because our central defence was made up of Smith, Delaney and Ainsley (Ingimarsson constantly injured) which was extremely weak.

Gerrard and Ayala have been lined in then last two seasons and now they've gone elsewhere.

This link has little substance. What about Wilson?

Anybody is better than Delaney and Ainsley as back up. This guy has won alot of player of the year awards in the lower leagues. Fan's player for the whole of league one too. Can't see Huddersfield selling him tbh

People on here make me laugh.... Even tho it's just a link I would welcome him to us. He wouldn't have so many awards if he wasn't consistent and when ur a centre half that's difficult to do. Been named captain in both sides he has been with surely speak volumes of his level of professionalism and the influence he has.....

I would very much doubt that they woul let him go - if they do it won't be cheap. I would much rather have him in the squad then rely on ainsley. Yes he will be good but not good enough at the moment.

Can't wait for the season to start!!! One or 2 more signings tho please!!

Probably the most underwhelming link so far this summer. Hope with have some irons in the fire. Personally I'd love to see Titus back alongside Chambers.. Exciting partnership with smith ready to step in.

Although definitely need one more centre back, more importantly I feel we need another striker as well, one that is at least 6ft tall to hold the ball up;so it is very worrying to hear that another club are now interested in Steve Davies. The fact that it is Brighton with a well respected Manager who took them to a higher position than us is of even more concern.Ipswich have been hanging on hoping for a steal;so Cloughie was right to hold out.Ipswich are not spending any more on players at present than they were 20/25 years ago.Close season 1987 David Lowe £80k,Neil Woods £120k.31/5/88 David Linighan £300k,15/11 Ian Redford £200k.16/1/90 Brian Gayle £330k and 10/7/92 Geraint Williams £650k.It is there for no surprise that now almost every time we are in serious competition for a player we lose out.I am sure it must be very disheartening for the Ipswich Manager.
Thought I saw the elusive ME at PR on Sat and I understand that he stayed on after to have a chat with PJ and SC;so lets hope we see some movement in the next week before season starts!

Not bad for back up but Chambers & Smith will surely be first choice. Would rather we went for Anthony Gerrard instead.

If he was part of the back 4, when they went on there long unbeaten run. He must have been doing something right. Sounds like good experience cover.

A good mate of mine is a Huddersfield season ticket holder and has raved about him for the past couple of seasons. Just had a chat with him and he'd be gutted if he leaves. A strong leader and very solid. Reckons he's as important to their team as a certain Mr Rhodes.

If we can sign Clarke then I would be evry happy with our back four.

@BROTHERBLUE1974 "If he was part of the back 4, when they went on there long unbeaten run. He must have been doing something right."

Yes, in Div1! Delaney and Ainsley would probably achieve that in Div1, which is totally the point.

I am in despair at our club's desparataion!

I'm happy with Chambers and Smith at the back, Clarke would be a good backup. The likes of Gerrard would not come here just to sit on a bench and personally I would choose Smith or Chambers ahead of him, he's not as good as his name ;-). Ideally with the fullbacks we have I'd want to play with 3 central defenders, especially with this divisions love of a 433. Wont ever happen though.

You wont get much more south than Brighton. Davies is packing his bags already.

I do feel for Jewell for all the nonsense he has to put up with from some of you so called "fans"!!!! He gets grief for looking at fringe premiership players, also gets grief for looking at players from our division and from what I re call all people want is for him to look at lower division and bring players that would be proud to wear he shirt and now that we are linked with arguably one of the best players in division 1 we have people moaning and saying that it's boring!!!

Get a grip!!!

Moan over. I for one hope this is a strong link and it may happen. Either him or Wilson plus a solid winger and a striker!! :-) not much to ask for obv. COYB!!

why would we want cast off's?

Surely every transfer ever made is a cast off...technically?

@Paulc, countless players who have excelled in league one (as Clarke has done by the sound of it) have made a seemless transition to the Championship. Some of the players from the scum (pains me to say it) and Southampton put defenders like Delaney to shame. It's no coincidence that we looked more solid against West Ham than we did against lowly Luton and Southend when Smith came in. Everybody I have spoken to said that as soon as Delaney came on we looked far more vulnerable on Saturday. Ainsley also looks incredibly weak defensively when he comes on too. There is no evidence to suggest that Clarke wouldn't be much better than both of these or that either of them could perform so admirably in league one. *rant over* :)

I don't understand why would Clarke be surplus to requirements at Huddersfield, when he is a club captain and player of the year for two years running? No way he's a cast off... I've seen him play quite a few times so - get in! :)

Town are reported to be interested in Huddersfield centre-half Peter Clarke? By who would be my question. Lets start a rumour.
I have it on very good authority that we are after Wayne Bridge with John Terry as back up,just in case Wayne is not up to it.
Or ,Cheryl Coal as goal keeper to help stiffen up the back 4.

old bri,you must be crazy. We would never get Cheryl Cole unless it was on a season long lone.
