Jewell: We Can Turn Things Around
Thursday, 20th Sep 2012 01:54

Blues boss Paul Jewell has insisted that his Town side are capable of turning their season around despite a disappointing start which sees them sitting in 23rd in the Championship after six games. The Blues have failed to score in their last two matches — both 2-0 defeats — despite creating plenty of opportunities in front of goal.

Jewell said: “I think we can turn it around. We’ve just got to take the chances. You guys [the media] have sat up here with numerous managers and they’ll have said the same thing - ‘goals change games’ - and if we get the first goal then you’ll see a different side to us.

“It’s not as if we’re not creating chances, we’re creating really good opportunities but we’ve got to be more ruthless in each box.”

The Blues boss is likely to be without recent signing Paul Taylor when Charlton visit Portman Road on Saturday, the former Peterborough man having left Portman Road on crutches after last night’s match due to an ankle injury sustained in the second half, while fellow frontman Michael Chopra could also be a doubt.

The 28-year-old tweeted: “Let's hope my thigh is better for the weekend, lots of rest and ice. Gutted about tonight, we need to start taking our chances.”

Wolves boss StÃ¥le Solbakken was pleased to notch his first away win as the manager of the Midlanders but admitted it was a close game: “It was hard work. It could have gone either way.

"I think in the first half both teams were very well organised and there were few chances and it was difficult for either team to open the other one up.

“In the second half there were a lot of chances for both teams. I think we struggled with the long ball into our penalty area, we defended too deep and even if we won the first ball, the second one could always cause us problems.

“But we also had some great chances; Kevin Doyle hit the inside of the post and Bjorn Sigurdarson should have scored at 0-0, so it could have gone either way.”

The Norwegian had sympathy with Tommy Smith for his own goal: “He was unlucky there. I didn’t really see what happened, but we haven’t had much luck so far this season, so maybe it was our turn today.”

Solbakken says his first six games as a manager in English football have shown him just how close the Championship is: “What I’ve seen so far is that there isn’t a great difference between the teams.

“I think that Ipswich are in a difficult situation when you look at the statistics so far, but they could have had points today and I saw their game with Middlesbrough and they were very unlucky and they drew at home with Blackburn, so I think that shows how even this league is.”

It'll come right. We're too good to get relegated. But such a bad start points-wise will affect team confidence if it continues. We fans need to keep on getting behind the players during the games so we don't make it even harder for them.

Obviously Jewell is going to say we can turn things around.

Just Imagine seeing this headline:

"Jewell: Season going exactly as planned"

PJs correct, we can turn things around - Once he's out the door!

If we're creating chance it shouldn't take too long for someone new to get us picking up points.

I think playing town players will help. Luongo stood out as the only loanee that should be playing get Hyam and Jet back in the team and give Scotland a run in the team too

Jewell knows that this is his last job in football as he stands no chance of further employment based on his era of shambolic management here. I doubt he is man enough to say 'you know what this isn't working so I'll go to give the club a chance of a fresh start', rather he will cling on and will continue to bemoan our lack of cutting edge and our defensive errors whilst he continues to drain what little confidence is left out of our team. Time for ME to show some of his business acumen, make the right decision for this club and sack Jewell.

I posted after the Blackpool game that I feared that one defeat would undue all the good work at the start of the season. PJ must be doing something wrong from the motivational side of things. It happened last season and to an extent the end of the season before when he'd just taken over. No matter how well we do, it only takes one defeat and the team's confidence is shattered and it takes weeks and even months to get over it. All teams lose games, but the sign of a good manager is how he gets his team to recover. Sadly it seems that PJ is still as clueless as to how to do this as he has been in his entire twenty months here.

I disagree I was well pleased with Ndaw thought he was our man of match, broke lots of the play up and created/started lots of our forward play. (Ndaw better than Leadbetter) yes luongo stood out but it was his loss of the ball which gave wolves the second. I dont want JET on the pitch... he is a bad penny!!!

jewell hold hands with clegg and go both are useless and if your actions were as good as your mouths we would not be where we are today

Right, who's next then? Not that it matters, my moral has sunk so low I have no faith in Evans and Clegg being able to get the correct person in anyway!

Evans do the right thing and remove Jewell, gert rid of Clegg as well so the new man has a chance getting good players in.

I'm amazed by those that have posted over the last week or so that we are too early into the season to jump to conclusions. Jewell has had as many games as Keane and if anything he has been given too long as opposed to not long enough.

And when we beat a very poor Charlton side on Saturday I'd caution the Jewell supporters not to crow too much as it will only prove a stay of execution.

In reply to the top post, (We as Fans need to get behind the team) it's not our Job to do that its the other way round they should be entertaining us, but they ain't doing that for a while now, and that affect's the atmosphere in the crowd which has been awful for year's.

As for the Band in the Cobbold Stand Drumming nr the North Stand, they are Awful and they should Jog on with Jewell and Clegg.

What does turning things around mean Mr.Jewell?

Will we score goals, stop conceding them, win 2 and then lose a lot again, or actually get on a winning streak?
