No Deal Before Deadline
Friday, 31st Jan 2014 21:15

Town will not now be signing the replacement for departed midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe before tonight’s 11pm deadline, we understand. Leeds’ Irish international midfielder Paul Green is believed have been the target with the Yorkshire club currently in a state of chaos, manager Brian McDermott having been sacked earlier this evening.

Earlier this afternoon, Town manager Mick McCarthy said he wanted to make the signing today, but otherwise would wait until the emergency window opens.

“I’m actually trying to get somebody in today, if that happens, brilliant, if it doesn’t there’s not a great deal I can do about it and the [loan window] opens in a week’s time.

“In fairness, he could be involved tomorrow, maybe not, so it’s not make or break. We could take him for 93 days if we took him when window’s shut.

“It’s just a matter of getting an answer really. The player wants to come and it’s fine. Depends whether they allow him to leave.”

The situation at Leeds is somewhat in a state of flux at present with a takeover ongoing and with former Middlesbrough defender Gianluca Festa set to be appointed the new boss by the incoming owners.

Meanwhile, Tunnicliffe's move from Manchester United for Fulham is expected to be formally confirmed by the Cottagers before the window closes at 11pm.

Elsewhere, former Blue Ed Upson has joined Millwall from Yeovil for a fee believed to be £100,000. Upson effectively replaces another former Town player Liam Trotter, who has joined tomorrow's opponents Bolton on loan.

Good, hopefully now MM can actually take his time and get a player we actually need rather than a panic signing

Not sure this is to bad a thing to happen. Other options may become available when the loan window opens

Poor. Mick wanted to bring in one more addition prior to learning Tunnicliffe was departing. Not only did we fail to bring in that addition, we also failed to replace Tunnicliffe as well. The likes of Barnsley are out doing us in the transfer market. Not good enough. We have the smallest squad in the league. Micks done an excellent job to get us to 7th, but without the backing, I can't see us pressing on.

A day lounging around looking at the transfers wasted then sigh.....

There's a shock! A couple of signings to freshen up and bolster the squad would have been great.

All good and kept the squad intact. Hunt will get regular games now .

Elliot Grandin was released by palace yesterday, he's a quality player and fits what we need, i know he's a free so no deadline but there must be other clubs sniffing around him?

Glad to see that we have happy people like jas0999 on here again tonight. Mick clearly knew Tunnicliffe was departing earlier than we knew so the replacement was for Tunners, not in addition. Personally would rather wait and see what fringe players from the Premier League are available come the emergency loan window (which jas0999 seems to have forgotten about). Tunners was a good workhorse but lets remember this is a player who admitted he cannot kick with his left foot and doesn't naturally cross the ball. Add this with the fact he cannot shoot and hasn't yet scored a goal yet, yes we will miss his constant running and tireless work rate but not too down about him moving on. As for Barnsley, very short sighted signings to keep them in the league, honestly is there a single player Barnsley have bought or taken in this window we would have wanted......no!

Such has become the norm on deadline day for town fans over the last few seasons. To have only brought in one player on loan is really poor. I avree with Jas0999 even barnsley have out done us business wise. Things aren't all that rosey at portman road!!! Still rather be in our shoes instead of leeds. Not such a great club as their deluded fans make out

I wasn't that excited by Paul Green, a player we were linked to in Jewell's day, but it's still disappointing not to sign him or any replacement for Tunnicliffe. With Hyam out injured, our central midfield options are limited indeed (Skuse, Tabb and Wordsworth).

What does all this matter. The club made it clear last summer and again with the run up to January they were sticking to FFP rules.
Perhaps they may want to read them again nobody else seems that worried.
MM has done ok to get us to where we are the only way now is down.
These are the times !!

...... another deadline day to raise our hopes, and be excited about - some hope of that, nothing changes but the date. So get used to it Guys / Gals - normal service resumes.

Barring disasters we have kept mgoldrick and cresswell, we lost tunicliffe but I don't think he is irreplaceable although he did a good job for us. Much prefer to get things done before the final day and with our much publicised dependence on loans and free agents not surprised to be waiting for the loan window to open. So really all things considered not a terrible day

No plan b, c or d .... Not surprised tbh...

.... beginning to suspect that most things happen at our Club - more by accident than design.

If we lose to Bolton tomorrow, the Reading result could be an example. But we are not going to - ARE WE ??

Guys, guys, calm down a bit, stop being so doom and gloom, my bet is Mick has a plan b up his sleeve when the loan window opens. He's done a good job so far, we havent been getting tonked like last year and we are in with a shout of the playoffs. We are in a better position than we have been in the last few years. Lets sit tight and see what happens and most importantly get behind the players that pull the blue and white shirts on! UP THE TOWN!!!!!!

I have never posted on here before but have got so sick of guys like jas0999 and jimmy86 who clearly revel in being moaning minnies and can't put any faith in our manager. .Every club will have disappointments at this time - and I bet there are other targets we didn't get that we don't know about -but please remember where we were 15 months ago and and recognise the job that MM has done in that time. Getting back to the premier league was always going to be a long term project with steps forwad - and back - on the way. As long as we keep moving forwards overall. We should always support our manager - and I speak as someone who has been watching the Town since 1952 and have seen so many ups and downs. Keep the faith guys

bobwya - totally agree. It's a long term building plan. Last season was survival, this season is about consolidation. Next season it's about building on this season.

Here's a crazy idea. Contracts should be based on a %age of income from gate receipts. That way the FFP rules can mean this cannot be in excess of 100% and agents will realise the restrictions of negotiation.

Bobwya I dont revel in being a moaning minnie as you call it and i have faith in our manager, its our owner who i dont have faith in anymore!! He hasn't backed our very capable manager who has done a fantastic job on a limited budget!!! I dont believe in the FFP farce and am a realistic town fan, who realises we are progressing well. It takes time, However is our owner really interested anymore?? Plus if you took time to read my posts ud see i dont have a gripe with mick. If your going to name, do ya research
