Town Again Linked With Tranmere Keeper
Monday, 30th Jun 2014 15:20

Town are again being linked with Tranmere keeper Owain Fon Williams, who is available on a free transfer. The Blues were understood to have targeted the 27-year-old Welshman last summer before he opted to sign a new two-year deal at Prenton Park, while he was previously linked with a move to Portman Road in 2009 and again in the summer of 2010.

According to Sky Sports, a clause in Williams’s contract, which has another year left to run, allows him to move on for nothing this summer. The Blues, Blackpool, who were also linked last year, and Leyton Orient are said to be monitoring his position.

Penygroes-born Williams started his career with Crewe but moved on to Stockport in 2008 without making a senior appearance.

It was while with the Hatters — during which time he had a short spell on loan at Bury - that he attracted Town’s interest.

In January 2011 6ft 4in tall Williams moved on to Rochdale where he remained until the following summer when he joined Tranmere.

Williams has been capped by Wales at U17, U19 and U21 levels and has been included in full squads but so far without making his full international debut.

I am a fan of his and he would be good competition for Gerken. Especially good that he is available for free. Sign him up!

Have only seen him on TV and to be honest have not been that impressed. If MM is going for a number two then probably be OK but if a number one I think we can do better.

I think we really need a new reliable number 1. We haven't had one since Kelvin Davis! We can't go on with Dean Gerken. Last season he cost us god knows how many points with his errors. Decent shot stopper but always got a blunder in him. I believe Keiran Westwood was released by Sunderland? He'd be a quality signing.

Is Kelvin still playing? If so, why not?

Michael11 couldnt have put it better myself. Would love us to go in for westwood, but fear a newer prem league team or ambitious championship club will go in for him. Wages would prob be an issue. I think we do need a new number 1 coz although gerken was fairly good at times he also made a fair few mistakes that cost us points

Was he not at scum for while (not that would stop me signing him if hes decent) not sure if I am confusing him with a striker with a similar name?...

RE Westwood I hear Brighton are in for him. I would love Ochoa off of mexico, just released by a French second tier side. Think his world cup as lifted him to higher echelons though

Irrespective of whether we think that we need a new first choice keeper, I can't see MM favouring anyone else over Gerken. As such, back up keeper only.

As an aside, I do hope that Gerken shaves that beard off for next season - looks like a gnome.

Skulking around in league 1 is not what we're looking for in terms of a reliable keeper!

We need a new number one keeper. Gerken is not terrible, nor is he great. A good keeper could get you an additional 5 or 6 points in a season. It could make. Big difference.

I don't know a lot about this guy to comment on him specifically though.

This guy is prone to making some awful ricks...would not be choice, although may suit to being a no2. Problem is we really do need anew decent no1. Westwood has always caught my eye....way back to Carlisle days. Push the boat out for him I say.

Dunno why people go on about henderson for. Admittedly he did get better during his time with town, but in my opinion he wasn't that much better than loach. He did come for crosses and relieve pressure on the defence, but his distribution was poor. Slowed down the play too much and his kicking was poor. We need a new number 1 and id go all out for westwood

Why not Neil Alexander? Best Town Keeper we have had since Davis!
