Wordsworth Joins Rotherham
Friday, 22nd Aug 2014 11:15

Midfielder Anthony Wordsworth has joined Rotherham United on loan until January. Yesterday, boss Mick McCarthy made the 25-year-old available for loan or permanent transfer.

Millers boss Steve Evans told their official site: “I am delighted that we have been able to bring Anthony Wordsworth to New York Stadium.

“He was a lad that we tried to sign on a few occasions last season but on every occasion we got close he was then back in Mick McCarthy’s first team so it never became a reality.

“The lad will bring a nice balance to our midfield area, he is naturally left-sided with a sweet left peg and can play on the left or centrally should the need arise.

“He is a talented boy who will come straight into contention for tomorrow’s tough match away at Millwall.

“It was important that if I added to the squad that I brought a player in who was with us for some time, and not just a few weeks.”

Wordsworth joined Town from Colchester in January 2013 for a fee of £100,000 but has never established himself as a regular in the side, making only 10 starts and 10 sub appearances, scoring twice.

The midfielder, who is out of contract at the end of the season, joins fellow loanee Paul Taylor and former Blues Scott Loach, Paul Green and Frazer Richardson at the New York Stadium.

Strange move so not good enough for MM but good enough for another championship competitor, hope this doesn't come back and bite MM on the backside when he starts to score goal and they end up above us

Do they want any more of our players?! Not happy about Wordsworth leaving. Really do think he had something to offer this season. We needed some creativity before we let him go so now I'd say we're desperate for it. Presumably this will mean Collison's signing.

At least he's going to be playing at championship level, This move is best for both parties if it means we can get a young creative midfielder in on loan

Are we seriously going down the route of 'he must be good enough for the Championship'? He's joined Rotherham. They are favourites to go down. We must naturally aim to have players of higher calibre than that of Rotherham if we are to progress in this league. This is good as it makes more room for a decent season long loan from the Premier League.

It will be very interesting for us Town fans to see how he and Taylor get on at Rotherham. Will one or both succeed? At least we will know if many of 'the arm chair managers' (including me) were right about either or both players.

Is Collinson tall enough and does he accept that defending has to come first?
Fear one more player won't be enough to make us a team that wants to keep the ball anyway.

Any news on some reinforcements arriving Phil.... this squad is painfully small

I'm a bit concerned that last season we had one of the smallest squads in the league which wasn't big enough in the end and we had to have 90 day loans to see us across the finish line and this season our squad is even smaller.

What's that the fifth player to leave us to go to Rotherham…??

Interesting words too by Evans, “The lad will bring a nice balance to our midfield area, he is naturally left-sided with a sweet left peg and can play on the left or centrally should the need arise. He is a talented boy who will come straight into contention for tomorrow's tough match away at Millwall."

I wonder if they will, or Wordsworth will, come back to haunt us….??

Bit surprised Rotherham want him as they are a very high tempo footballing team and Wordsworth certainly is not that. I am positive MM knows what he is doing and reinforcements will arrive in due course.

Beginning to wonder how they will be able to field a team against us when we play them. Becoming the new Col U! Wordworth, Taylor, Green, Loachy, Richardson. Perhaps they would like Nouble and Marriott when he comes back from Carlise?

I don't think Wordsworth has been good enough, and I hope this is a signal that a replacement will be brought in. We really do need that creative, goalscoring midfielder!

Not happy about this one at all. I felt like this was going to be wordsworths year to show what he can do

what's the point in keeping us in the championship if we can only afford a league 1 team?

Not looking forward to Rotherham on the 27th. Too many players with points to prove.

Wordsworth is a talented player but maybe not in MM style given enough game time i am sure he would have been an asset to us he had two excellent games back to back last season then Mcarthy dropped him to bring old mate Skusey back in after that he only got ten or fifteen minutes here and there i recon he got pI--ed off and wanted to leave our loss.

this must mean someone ( Collison ) is signing other wise we are seriously short in the middle of the park especially we keep playing Tabb as a left winger. There is talk that Williams is going to be starting tomorrow for Palace as Puncheon is suspended. Not good for town if he plays like he did last year for us!

I really don't enjoy our style of hard working, battle it out grafters, and no creativity at all. We know the way we are makes it difficult for sides to beat us, and of course that's better than the Jewell days when we were taking a hiding every other week. MM might be forgiven if we make it into the play-offs, but surely it should be a good mix of hardworking pros and some with a bit of creativity. If we do make it to the play-offs, it will be because we've regularly bored the opposition off the pitch. Poor crowds are down to lack of entertainment more so than prices. Get us playing good football at the top end of the league and the crowds will return.

Don't worry about Taylor or Wordsworth succeeding at Rotherham - they won't because they're not very good.

Well,at least Taylor and Wordsworth now have the opportunity to show what they can do in the Championship, while we (presumably?) retain our options.

On another note! I've just read on a BBC Sport that our good friend Chopra wishes to renounce his British passport and wishes to establish himself as the footballing equivalent of Tendilkar!
Deluded or what? In any event, good riddance on all counts.
