Stoke Eyeing Murphy Move
Friday, 19th Jun 2015 10:12

Premier League Stoke City are the latest club understood to be considering a summer move for much-fancied Blues striker Daryl Murphy.

According to some reports, Potters boss Mark Hughes views Town’s 27-goal Championship top scorer as a potential replacement for ex-Blues skipper Jon Walters, who is being linked with West Brom where Stoke’s former manager Tony Pulis is now in charge.

Irish international Murphy has been the subject of much speculation since the end of the season. Last week Middlesbrough were claimed to have had a £2.5 million offer turned down, while Cardiff were reported to have him at the top of their summer wish-list.

Newly-relegated Burnley and QPR as well as Fulham have also been mentioned in connection with the 32-year-old, along with the other demoted former Premier League team Hull City, who were previously linked in January.

Manager Mick McCarthy and owner Marcus Evans have both said they are determined to keep hold of the Blues' key players this summer, while Murphy has repeatedly stated that he has no intention of leaving Town as he and his family are settled in Suffolk.

The former Waterford, Sunderland and Celtic frontman signed a new contract with Town last July, which has another year left to run with the Blues having an option to extend it for a further season.

Naaaa not ever going to happen, he's found the right club at the right age, there's a big chance he just had the season of his life and next year won't score half that amount, mings can go for stupid money but keep Murphy and bishop

What value to you give to Murphy?

A prem club values the cost of not scoring (burnley).

Strikers will always cost more. He's a prem player all day long.

Sadly we would miss him most. Of would be a real loss, but it would be a final pay day and you can't deny anybody that.

I hope MM has an amazing transfer list lined up.

Don't really understand this rumour as Stoke just signed Joselu and have a few other strikers there. Why would Murphy want to sit on the bench for Stoke when he would be playing every match here. Its inevitable that the league's top scorer is going to be linked with moves away but even if we accept a bid of 5 million that money isn't all going to be put back into transfers.

...to join the "debate" I am in the if we are getting 3-4 million for him sell.MM and TC knew when they came to the club a great deal of the transfer activity invoLved raising funds . Who would we rather loose...a promising left back or get the money we need to avoid FFP from a striker (however good last season was) that will only give us another year in the championship if we get promoted (won't be good enough for the prem then) or two if we don't . Murphy was great last season but tailed off toward the end seemingly with a strange lack of conviction in front of goal ...continued story in the recent internationals.
We have Sears and hopefully a re-engaged mcgoldrick ....get a very decent lower league striker and mould....Mm may like hoof ball but we may just need to see a change in this ...prem teams acknowledge that this is not the way to play ....we will need to change at some point!!!
....and anyway we need some more debate about the right back position ....it remains unresolved and I for one will abosolutely despair if next seasons starting back four is the same as the end of last .....that would prove no forward thinking!!!!

Before last season Murphy pure and simple wasn't a goal scorer - it's more likely he gets our goals as he is the end product of the 'hoof' although some of his goals he took very well. He's a strong player and pretty good in the air all the classic attributes Mick likes, so yes he is more than a goal scorer to us but 2M+ from a player at the age goes some way to strengthening a thin squad (which was part of the problem of the down turn in the New Year once we had injuries). Next season will no doubt be the same player (if he stays here) with the same amount of effort, good in the air etc. but probably without the goal tally. So should we only sell Mings to boost our transfer spending?

Murphy was the most important player in the first real promotion push we've had in 10 years. I think we should be building on where we left off last season. I don't see the best, most experienced striker in the league as something we should cash in on. Aside from that, he only started getting really exceptional when he settled with us. Why would he or itfc want to disrupt that? If he left for a increased paycheck, I will be extremely jaded!

We only have a few weak links; they're all in midfield (and a CB playing RB in my opinion), so why would we change the best part of what we have, unless it frees us to improve on it? And how can you improve on the best striker in the league last year? It would take an offer in the region of 6m, and then it would still be a gamble to try to replace him.

Also, I think with everything that can be done to preserve the aging player's fitness these days, you could say that 34 is the new 32 and that he has at last another good year left in him, probably two. I think it would more appropriate to bring in a young loan player to replace him mid game if/when he starts tiring.

All this speculation and people talking about us not spending let look at it we don't need to sell and would cause more issues bringing in someone as a replacement, there is money around for the right person we would in a way all like to spend millions but as a fan I would be rather be in the position we are in to say QPR or Derby the risks they are putting on themselves by gambling on promotion is high and along with the risks come pressure added pressure that we don't have as if it goes wrong unlike them we will be as we are. Take QPR have lost anything up to 12 - 15 players from last season and are buying cause at the moment they can if the FFP fine holds up they would have to find a fine up to 60 million pounds which would stop any transfers for years and prob end up in administration we know what that is like anyone want a player any reasonable offer automatically accepted so let be honest think about it its about risk and reward but im very happy with the considered approach where we can say sod off their our players and in the last couple of years there has been improvement and with maybe Connelly, Stewart, McDonnell, Benyu who are pushing for first team and would really be first choice if they have developed and be new players as the irish lads couldn't play last year and from what ive read and seen have a hell of a lot of potential, I think a RB and another Striker and possibly a Midfielder and we will be fine and push on we have got pace this season we never saw last without buying anyone.

MM isn't daft and whilst publically stating that he wants to keep our best players he would know that a PL club may well be making a bid for both Mings and Murphy. Behind the scenes I'm guessing that he and his team have been looking at potential replacements.

jas0999 added 14:14 - Jun 19
The club say they have no intention of selling, but they also said last summer money was available for fees. Murphy will want another crack at PL football so it would be difficult to stand in his way. Unless the owner and MM can convince him of their transfer ambition - Murphy has rightly already made it clear that Mick needs backing and quality players are required - then he will probably seriously consider a PL team option. At 32 he may not get too many chances, particularly if we rely on just frees and loans this Summer it's difficult to see how we will compete with at least 8 or 9 other clubs. Last year we did brilliantly, but can't keep relying on the current strategy.

Why do so many people look at our players as just names in a fantasy football league competition.

We've had days of the Mings situation, now Murphy. They are at opposite ends of a career in football but have one thing in common. They are both in a relatively successful team where togetherness as a team is key. MM won't let either go without a fight, and, while he will find it difficult to stop them if their heads are turned by promises of riches, they themselves will need to balance job satisfaction with financial reward. Either which way good luck to both if a decision has to be made.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him go on the final day for quite an inflated price after clubs have missed out on other targets to be honest!

2.5m is good price for 32 yr striker. Murph worth more to us than that when you factor in his overall contribution. 40+ from DM/FS (whatever the split) and 10+ maybe from DMcG in a deeper role would be terryfying. Would wish DM well if he takes unrefusable offer though.

Come on folks. Murphy has got better and better since he first appeared at Portman Rd. No reason why he can't repeat his form of the season just finished. Bloody hell, its only weeks since we finished last season, can anyone give me any genuine reasons why his form shouldn't continue for another few months? Especially if McGoldrick is fit again and makes space for Murphy.

As long as Evans is willing to give ALL the money from a Murphy transfer to MM I would say another over £3m would be good business form us!

Isn't it nice to have all these rumours about our players again after many years, although personally wouldn't want any of our best ones to go,and feel like Jas that we must strengthen a very depleted squad.
Think if we keep best players and try and bring through some from under 21's.The Irish lads,Stewart and Henshall;plus a season long loan like the Arsenal lad. Then would only need a max of three players.
Think ITFC financial year finishes in a few days;so surely it would pay Mr Evans to gamble and bring in 1 stellar purchase for money in July, and Mick could hopefully find a Bosman and a couple of free cast offs to make up the numbers,oh and keep Reg Varney
I am sure he will do some deals in the close season, lets hope sooner rather than later so that they may have the benefit of a pre-season.

........ some overlook the fact that Murphy is yet another player of this Club who has played most of his Football for us out of his best position - last season being the exception.

He has just proved two things:-

1. He is a very capable player in his rightful position.

2. He can score goals. ( Give him better service, and he's capable of even more .... !! )

All the speculation is nonsense - simple really - to stay here he will need assurance that the ultimate aim this season is a GENUINE all out drive for promotion.

Otherwise a decent offer from a decent Club will see him wanting to go.

Few short weeks to go - let's start showing that ambition (if it's there) with some positive action on the signing front - shall we ?????

MM got lucky with Murphy, previously he'd only scored 24 goals in 12 seasons.

We got in the play-offs due to luck. MM is talentless.

4/5 Million, we would be right to sell him sadly. Irrespective of whether we have a like for like replacement lined up, this would be too much money to say no to an ageing striker.

however anything less then it s not in our interests to sell him.

If the opportunity came, then this is most likely his last shot at the premier league as if we were to go up next season then would town offer him a long term deal when he is 34/35? No.

I would like him to stay but change may not be a bad thing. Without our big target man we might end up playing a different style, McG and Sears have the capacity to be classy together, not taking it in turn to line up next to a big man.

Whatever happens, MM will do us right.

the club wouldn't deny him a chance to return to the Premier, but if this happens we must give Mick the cash to replace him

If the club don't start to show some ambition for an all out effort to win automatic promotion i think he will seriously consider a move up, Derby are defiantly showing ambition to win promotion this season with four quality signings already come on MM and ME get yourselves into gear.
