Australian International to Join Town
Friday, 28th Aug 2015 15:09

Town have revealed that free agent Australian international winger Tommy Oar is joining the club.

The 23-year-old is due at the club over the weekend having left Dutch side FC Utrecht - where he made 105 Eredivisie appearances, scoring four goals - after five years in the summer.

The Queenslander was previously with the Brisbane Roar, having played youth football with Palm Beach and QAS.

Manager Mick McCarthy told Ipswich Player: “We have watched Tommy a few times and checked him out on our scouting system. We have done our due diligence on him and he will be a good signing for us.

“I spoke to [former Holland international] Jan Wouters, who worked with him at Utrecht, and he gave him a glowing report.

“He is quick and direct and puts some great crosses in. He does all the tracking back as well. I’m delighted to have him. He’s a full Australian international and he will add to the competition here.”

Oar has won 25 full caps, scoring two goals, having made his international debut in March 2010.

He was a member of this year's Asian Cup-winning squad but played only one game from the bench.

Oar was included in the 28-man provisional squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but didn't make the final cut.

Having been in the squad for the U20 World Cup in Colombia in 2011, he then started all three of the Socceroos' games at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Oar was recently close to joining Athletic Bilbao but the deal fell through as he was deemed to have insufficient Basque heritage, despite his paternal grandparents having come from the region.

Athletic only recruit players from the Basque country or who have come through their youth system.

Oar also received interest from clubs in the Middle East and elsewhere abroad, and had also been linked with Brighton, Hull City and Fulham.

Fantastic signing! Our wings are pretty packed now. Arguably our weakest position last year has become our best this year!

Great news. The new wide guys are the big difference and we need good cover to keep ahead of the pack.

Good, Aussies always bring a good work ethic and a commitment to being the best they can be when it comes to sport, I assume he is a direct replacement for CS .

Fennyboy YES, that's a catchy sing along right there. Hope FPR gets buzzing this season, it feels like its all just bubbling atm but ready to go mental!

Some people think im bonkers, but I just think im free!

This is excellent. I look back at the comments of when it was announced that mick was in line to be the next town manager. It was 60-40 in favour of him. I wonder do that 40% now believe they were wrong. Really believe this is gonna be the season we go up.

Pete, that's easy. Now we have a top bloke n charge, like his style or not Mick is a proper genuine guy, don't think anyone can deny that. As opposed to Roy Keane is an arse and one in their right mind would want to work for him. Its like having Branson for a boss after putting up with Sugar

If this lad is as good as that article suggests, he needs to be starting ahead of Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Ainsley is terrific, but Oar will be our own player. Wouldn't want him to flounder while we develop someone else's player for them.

So from Australia, town is not too far to come to then? so much for all the potential signings that said we were too far out in the sticks!

He looks like, and he'll obviously given Ryan Fraser a run for his money, a like for like replacement though with when we lose Fraser back to Bournemouth next summer. Clearly, having seen the YouTube clip, he'll play but though once Fraser goes back Tommy Oar will cover Fraser's absence.
