McCarthy and Murphy Win Awards
Friday, 11th Dec 2015 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy and striker Daryl Murphy have won the Sky Bet Championship Manager and Player of the Month awards for November. It’s the second time in just over a year that the Blues have pulled off such a double, McCarthy and former full-back Tyrone Mings having carried off the September 2014 gongs.

McCarthy, whose side took 10 points from 12 during November, beat Derby’s Paul Clement, Middlesbrough’s Aitor Karanka and Brighton’s Chris Hughton to claim his second Manager of the Month award with Town and the fifth of his career. He previously won one with Wolves and two with Sunderland.

Murphy, who scored six goals in three games including his first hat-trick in 11 years at Rotherham, fought off competition from Brighton’s Solly March, Leeds United midfielder Alex Mowatt and Derby goalkeeper Scott Carson.

“It’s a reflection on everybody, the Manager of the Month award,” McCarthy said. “The Player of the Month one, Murph’s, that’s a reflection on him playing well and scoring goals.

“My award, I accept it on behalf of everybody else. That’s not me being humble, that’s the way it is because it’s been a good effort by everybody.”

He admits the Blues needed the form they showed in November after a disappointing October in which they took only three points form a possible 15.

“Yes, we did, but that’s the beauty of this league. It is all very close, it’s a tough, relentless league.

“There’s not much between us all on any given day and that’s why you can have a good run of three wins or four wins and if you can get that then you can get back up the league, as we did. And we had good performances and good results.”

Murphy was pleased to land the award he previously won in December last year.

“It’s very pleasing to win the award and it was a good month for us,” the Irish international told Ipswich Player HD.

“We had some good wins, after a difficult month before that and on a personal note I managed to get a few goals.

“It’s nice to win the award but all the lads deserve credit as it was a real team effort and hopefully we can take this form into the festive period.”

Reflecting on the famed Manager of the Month curse, McCarthy added: “It’s great because the jinxed one’s gone, that was the Middlesbrough game before they’d even told me I’d got it. It’s already been played out, that!

“But we did play well during November and we played well against Middlesbrough as well, it was just the fact that they scored and we just let our guard down a bit. But for 65 minutes we were excellent.”

He says the Blues will need a few more months like November if they’re to finish in the top six for a second successive season.

“You can win three or four games, we had a great November but we’ll have to have a few more great months as well if we’re going to end up in the play-offs,” McCarthy continued.

“I think the league is tougher, I think it’s more competitive in terms of quality, teams have spent a lot of money and added to their squads, and we’ll be as competitive as ever and trying to get in the play-offs. Whereabouts that’s going to be, I don’t know. May will tell me, as it always does.”

Wow, the manager and a player are awarded a trophy and there is negativity. Amazing. Enjoy your weekends you cheerful lot! Well done MM and Murphy! A good push in November and some vital points on the board!

I'm not going to go down the route of what makes or fan or not...
Actually, sod that, I am.
If all you can do is find negativity or moan about your club's manager winning an award based on good results, then perhaps you should find another team to follow. I won't use the word 'support'.
I hear Chelsea and Man Utd are looking for more plastic fans.
I'll write you a reference if you want.

Love the Daryl Murphy interview, an absolute textbook example of putting pointless non-questions to a player. Murph looks like he's going to fall asleep any second!

Well deserved recognition for the way the team turned our form around.

Think McCarthy won it for the turn-around from a poor October to a very successful November (dropped just two points).

Great reflection upon the club and the team. Congratulations to both men.

Praised during our good run and slagged off remorselessly when we lost last week. MM is managing a mid table side who have no money to spend. I for one think he deserves it. Perhaps others would rather have a manager who wasn't in a position to win the award.

For those questioning McCarthy winning this, it was because town took more points than any other side in November (10 out of a possible 12). Funnily enough Derby of all teams are complaining about clement not winning it!!!

I see when we win its because it's against "weak" teams. Charlton the weak team that scored 2 against Brighton and near caused an upset. At the end of the day you can only beat what is in front of you. Ive said it before and I will say it again, most of you moan for the sake of moaning.

I read the comments on this site and was wondering how on earth a dinosaur and a donkey can win any awards . possibly someone could explain this to me?

@Michael99
Because a lot of people on here don't realise that a lot of dinosaurs were strong, fast, and fantastic creatures. They also don't realise that donkeys are strong, reliable and loyal.
Both have probably brought more to this planet than the the posters on here who, presumably, share a brain cell. I'm just speculating.

November was a good month and both thoroughly deserve their awards. But we need to be realistic also. December was always going to be the test. No disrespect to either Mick or Murphy, but it's one thing beating and scoring against Bolton, Rotherham and Carlton, it's completely different against Middlesboro, Derby, QPR and Brighton. This month could define our season and sadly it has been a disappointing start with a deserved loss to a better Middlesboro side.

I hope MM wins again and again, just think where we'd be TOP 6! More please Murph

@jas0999 I don't agree at all that we deserved to lose against Boro. Yes, they scored 2 goals and we didnt and therefore the result is justified, but we played really well at times in that game and made chances which we didnt convert (couple of really top saves from the Boro keeper spring to mind) but you're implying that we were sh1t and never looked like getting anything, and I completely disagree.
